    Verlagsinfo: Plurilingual communication is common practice in most urban areas. Societal domains such as business and science nowadays see themselves as international, and plurilingual communication is the rule rather than the exception. But how do other players in critical domains of modern societies, and more specifically, in education react to this situation? This volume of the Hamburg Studies in Linguistic Diversity (HSLD) series explores this question along three major lines. One group of contributions sheds light on educational policies in Europe and beyond. A second group of contributions elucidates what interaction and communication practices develop in multilingual contexts. The focus is on school settings. Thirdly, we present articles that discuss the effects of plurilingual settings and plurilingual practices on language development. As a whole this volume shows how linguistic diversity shapes a central domain of our societies, namely education, and how it also impacts upon the development of the individuals interacting in this domain.

    Children educated in Catalonia are growing in a multilingual environment. Catalan is their school language but not necessarily their home or social language. Our goal was to track the presence of such multilingual input in the written lexicon of 2,436 students throughout compulsory schooling. Participants were asked to write down as many names as they remembered of five semantic fields and to produce 6 types of text. The two corpora were tapped for the presence of non-Catalan and hybrid constructions. Unexpectedly, these accounted for only 3% of the total number of lexical forms in the corpora...

    Children educated in Catalonia are growing in a multilingual environment. Catalan is their school language but not necessarily their home or social language. Our goal was to track the presence of such multilingual input in the written lexicon of 2,436 students throughout compulsory schooling. Participants were asked to write down as many names as they remembered of five semantic fields and to produce 6 types of text. The two corpora were tapped for the presence of non-Catalan and hybrid constructions. Unexpectedly, these accounted for only 3% of the total number of lexical forms in the corpora Verlagsinfo: Plurilingual communication is common practice in most urban areas. Societal domains such as business and science nowadays see themselves as international, and plurilingual communication is the rule rather than the exception. But how do other players in critical domains of modern societies, and more specifically, in education react to this situation? This volume of the Hamburg Studies in Linguistic Diversity (HSLD) series explores this question along three major lines. One group of contributions sheds light on educational policies in Europe and beyond. A second group of contributions elucidates what interaction and communication practices develop in multilingual contexts. The focus is on school settings. Thirdly, we present articles that discuss the effects of plurilingual settings and plurilingual practices on language development. As a whole this volume shows how linguistic diversity shapes a central domain of our societies, namely education, and how it also impacts upon the development of the individuals interacting in this domain.

This volume of the Hamburg Studies in Linguistic Diversity (HSLD) series explores this question along three major lines.     Das Ziel dieses Beitrags ist es, Einblicke in den Forschungsbereich der plurilingualen Bildung zu geben und dabei insbesondere auf diejenigen Forschungsansätze und Formen von Theoriebildung zu fokussieren, die in Richtung eines integrativen und identitätsorientierten Sprachunterrichts entwickelt wurden. Der erste Teil des Artikels stellt Ansätze in den Mittelpunkt, die Sprache, Sprachenlernen und interkulturelles Lernen explizit mit Bezug auf die Identität der Lernenden konzeptualisieren. Auch werden einflussreiche Konzepte wie Plurilingualismus, Sprachenrepertoire und translanguaging in ihrer Bedeutung für eine Neuorientierung mehrsprachiger Bildung diskutiert. Im zweiten Teil werden ausgewählte empirische Forschungsprojekte vorgestellt, die sich auf das gesamte Sprachrepertoire der Lernenden konzentrieren und kritisch auf die Schulwirklichkeit schauen. Die Forschungsergebnisse deuten darauf hin, dass Theorie und Praxis weiterhin wenig verknüpft sind und dass es eines hohen Maßes an Engagement bedarf, um Lehrende bei der Umsetzung von integrativen und identitätsbezogenen Zugängen in ihrem Unterricht zu unterstützen. Auch wird es darum gehen, im Rahmen der verschiedenen und oft getrennt voneinander arbeitenden Forschungsbereiche im Hinblick auf Mehrsprachigkeit stärker als bisher in einen inter-/transdisziplinären Dialog zu treten, um einen integrativen Blick auf Sprachenlernen und -lehren zu fördern. The aim of this contribution is to provide insights into the research field of multilingual education, focusing in particular on those research approaches and forms of theory that have been developed in the direction of inclusive and identity-based language teaching. The first part of the contribution focuses on approaches that explicitly conceptualise language, language learning and intercultural learning with reference to the identity of learners. Influential concepts such as plurilingualism, language repertoire and translanguaging are also discussed in terms of their significance for a reorientation of multilingual education. In the second part, selected empirical research projects will be presented that focus on the learner's language repertoire and critically examine school reality. The research results suggest that theory and practice remain unrelated and that a high degree of commitment is needed to support teachers in implementing integrative and identity-related approaches in their teaching. It will also be a matter of stepping up the inter-transdisciplinary dialogue on multilingualism within the framework of the various and often separate research fields, in order to promote an integrative view of language learning and teaching.

    Children educated in Catalonia are growing in a multilingual environment. Catalan is their school language but not necessarily their home or social language. Our goal was to track the presence of such multilingual input in the written lexicon of 2,436 students throughout compulsory schooling. Participants were asked to write down as many names as they remembered of five semantic fields and to produce 6 types of text. The two corpora were tapped for the presence of non-Catalan and hybrid constructions. Unexpectedly, these accounted for only 3% of the total number of lexical forms in the corpora
