The idea that a certain ethnic or social group is historically related to the ancient Israelites is a widespread phenomenon in Africa. In some cases the identification is made from a ‘we'-perspective about ‘our' group, such as the Lembas in Zimbabwe and South Africa. In other cases it is made from a ‘they'-perspective about ‘their' group, such as Moritz Merker's claim about the Maasai of East Africa. Merker served as a colonial officer in German East Africa, and his Die Masai: Ethno-graphische Monographie eines ostafrikanischen Semitenvolkes (1904, 19102) is generally seen as the first ethnographic study of the Maasai, and as such it continues to receive attention. However, the ethnographic focus of the book is framed by a discussion about the past of the Maasai, arguing - with reference to contemporary German Assyriology and Biblical Studies - that they are a Semitic people originating in Arabia and sharing roots with the ancient Israelites. The article discusses Merker's claim and argues that its central idea of a non-African background of the Maasai reflects Merker's colonial, interpretive context.

The essay discusses the potential of the theological significance of the so-called "African presence" in the Bible, that is, biblical texts referring to entities that today would be labelled "African," in particular, references to Egypt and Cush. The focus, therefore, is on the encounter between these texts and the socio-religious experiences and concerns of contemporary African biblical studies. The essay concludes that the presence of "Africa and Africans" has the potential of balancing the universalistic trajectory of the Bible. Without a concrete example such as "Africa," universalism would be empty rhetoric and without a universalistic frame of interpretation, the "African presence" would face the danger of simply repeating—although this time from an Afrocentric perspective—the ethnocentric fallacy we have seen so much of by Eurocentricists in the past. doi.org/10.17159/2312-3621/2023/v36n1a13

This book discusses the Lord’s Resistance Army’s (LRA) use of Old Testament texts and motifs in their rhetoric to mobilise and sustain the rebellion in Northern Uganda, specifically in Gulu district, the area that has been particularly affected by the LRA’s actions throughout more than two decades. This book also delves into the much-ignored religious dimension of studies on the LRA, which forms the core of the LRA's ideology. The LRA uses biblical motifs to legitimize its ideology and practice and this is the first study which goes into a detailed empirical and hermeneutical analysis of the same. More importantly, this book proposes an ethical gender-sensitive model for reading and interpreting the Bible. The book can be used by students of political science, anthropology, religious studies, contemporary religions and new religious movements as well as by biblicists, theologians and general readers whose interests lie in understanding how issues have evolved.
