    Entgegen einer weit verbreiteten Ansicht waren die Kreuzzüge keineswegs ein Phänomen, das auf das Mittelalter beschränkt blieb. Es gibt sie bis heute. Der vorliegende Sammelband mit Beiträgen aus der westlichen und der arabischen Welt setzt sich zur Aufgabe, die Kreuzzugsidee in ihren neuzeitlichen, zum Teil säkularisierten Ausformungen zu fassen und ihre Entwicklungen bis in die Gegenwart zu beschreiben. Dabei werden vor allem die USA ausführlich als Erben mittelalterlicher Traditionslinien analysiert. Der Ideengeschichtliche Ansatz mündet in Betrachtungen europäischer und arabischer Geschichtskultur und wartet mit didaktischen Ansätzen auf, die den zuvor gewonnenen Erkenntnissen Rechnung tragen. Nicht nur die aktuellen Verschwörungsmythen um den „Großen Austausch“, den „Deep State“ oder „QAnon“ sind Beispiele dafür, wie sehr historisch-politische Mythen noch heute auch westliche Gesellschaften durchdringen. Aber nicht alle Mythen waren oder sind zwingend gefährlich, vielmehr brauchen Menschen Mythen, denn Mythen erfüllen wichtige soziale Funktionen, die vielfach mit „Zugehörigkeit“ zu tun haben. Der vorliegende Band begreift Mythen daher nicht nur als notwendiges Übel innerhalb des Geschichtsbewusstseins, sondern als dessen unverzichtbaren Bestandteil.     „Mythos“ ist ein schillernder Begriff, der in den Geisteswissenschaften auf unterschiedlichste Weise diskutiert wird. Nicht nur die aktuellen Verschwörungsmythen um den „Großen Austausch“, den „Deep State“ oder „QAnon“ sind Beispiele dafür, wie sehr historisch-politische Mythen noch heute auch westliche Gesellschaften durchdringen. Aber nicht alle Mythen waren oder sind zwingend gefährlich, vielmehr brauchen Menschen Mythen, denn Mythen erfüllen wichtige soziale Funktionen, die vielfach mit „Zugehörigkeit“ zu tun haben. Der vorliegende Band begreift Mythen daher nicht nur als notwendiges Übel innerhalb des Geschichtsbewusstseins, sondern als dessen unverzichtbaren Bestandteil. Er stellt Eigenschaften, Funktionen und Arten historischer Mythen vor und unterbreitet auf dieser Grundlage an (einst) wirkmächtigen Beispielen praxisorientierte Vorschläge für einen kompetenzorientierten Umgang mit ihnen im Geschichtsunterricht.

    The paper deals with an actual project that investigates the Crusades Myth in historical novels written in German or translated into German. Its source base consists of 116 historic novels from 1786 until 2011 that deal with the crusades to the Holy Land. The results should allow insights into the ideas and values that were particularly important to the German-speaking societies of the Early Modern Period. Furthermore it is to be expected that the key threads of ideas and values will allow for a productive comparison of politics, historical research and historical culture. Ultimately, the work on this topic aims to unveil the kind of methodology that can be used for a comparison of mentalities and cultures using partially fictive historical sources.
