    Cette thèse consiste à étudier un corpus d'images qui réunit des représentations de la maladie, des états pathologiques dans la production artistique de la Renaissance. La question principale est de savoir à quelles conditions il a pu y avoir une expression plastique de la maladie en fonction de deux données essentielles, soit, le fait que les artistes de la Renaissance travaillaient à élaborer une esthétique conforme aux théories de l'art de leur époque, en terme d'équilibre, de mesure et d'harmonie, et deuxièmement, le fait que la maladie constitue, par définition, un effet de force en perpétuelle transformation. Notre travail vise à montrer le déplacement que produit cet ordre de représentation par rapport au sens mimétique de l'oeuvre, ces écarts par rapport aux critères de ressemblance et d'imitation perturbant le modèle rhétorique qu balise le concept de représentation. Cette étude est une mise en rapport avec les théories de l'art et avec la pensée de Louis Marin This thesis is a study of the representation of disease in the visual arts of the Renaissance. The principal question which guided this reflexion is to learn under what conditions there could have been a plastic expression of disease according to two essential given points : firstly, the fact that the artists of the renaissance tried to create an esthetics in conformity with the theories of art of their time in terms of balance, measurement and harmony, and secondly, the fact that disease constitues, by definition, an effect of force in perpetual transformation. Starting from the idea that the representation of the pathological states in Renaissance art serves an apologetic function which largely exceeds that of simple descritpion, the thesis aims at showing the displacement which produces this order of representation compared to the mimetic direction of the image. Our study of the images will be put in connection with both the theories and also the thought of Louis Marin

    Tous les éléments, textuels et visuels, de DDD de Paul Valéry participent à une mise en scène de l'instabilité, déjouant les attentes du lecteur. Pour ce faire Valéry fait usage d'une rhétorique, souvent classique, qui sait s'adjoindre les ressources du figural. Confronté à leurs effets, le lecteur doit accepter la déroute comme principe de lecture. Cet effet d'égarement est renforcé par une matière textuelle et visuelle dynamique. DDD, échappant à la clôture et à l'inertie, exige une perpétuelle circulation du regard. Des temporalités coexistent. La capacité de transformation de DDD suscite une interrogation sur la ligne mimique, en relation avec la "formule pathique" warburgienne. Altérant la figure humaine, la mimique entraîne une réflexion sur l'informe, dont Degas et Valéry jouent selon les moyens de leur art Degas, Danse, Dessin by Paul Valéry can't fail to surprise the reader : all the elemnts, both textual and visual, actually take part in a production of instability. That is why everything works towards presenting a text which is very far from the most conventional formal and hermeneutic expectations. Valéry is writing here for the reader to choose his own rhythm, even if i/he is subtly led according to the author's design. The taste of polymorphism -structural, narrative but also using the text-picture relations- is quite effective. to rich is aim, Valéry sets up a singular rhetoric, knowing how to take advantage of the material means of the book, confirming its suspensive function. The ressources of the figural, bursting in the order of the discourse, have to be associated with the rhetorical means. Between rhetoric and figural, the reader has to accept to be disconcerted. Moreover, some formal flexibility - structural, thematic and metaphorical - holds one's attention : the animal reference, for instance, conveys the energy of the movement, embodied by the figure of a dancer. DDD favours a visual reading, like a polyptych. The look has to circulate, letting different coexisting temporalities, which give to the form a real power of transformation. The latter conveys a questionning about the virtues of gesture. From the "gesture line" of Degas as the "movement of life found in the Greeks time" to the pathic formula, after the warburgian terminology, a relation of closeness has to be considered. Distorting the human figure, the gesture leads to a reflexion on the undefined, interval between two forms, that Degas and Valéry use according to the means of their art

    Cette étude est un prolongement, dans le domaine poétique, de la réflexion sur la métis engagée par Marcel Detienne et Jean-Pierre Vernant. En tant que récit d'épreuves, l'Odyssée est le cadre idéal pour une expression poétique de la métis. Ulysse et Pénélope sont rusés, ils partagent une homophrosunè, une égalité et une complicité d'intelligence. Ils sont, également, polukerdeièsin, ils ont un penchant, un tropisme, pour les astuces. Ils ne font qu'un quand il s'agit de tirer un profit. Le terme qui nous a semblé le plus approprié pour rendre compte de l'intelligence d'Ulysse et de Pénélope est kerdosuné, l'astucieuse efficacité, la recherche du profit (kerdos). L'enjeu des épreuves épiques est le rétablissement de la reconnaissance, de la charis. Ulysse ruse pour retrouver sa place au sein de l'oikos, pour être reconnu par les siens. Le chant épique participe à cette entreprise de protection et de maintien de la charis. Il est un expédient, un pharmakon epistrophon qui « fait tourner » (traduction d'epistréphein) les cœurs vers l'euphrosuné, l'état joyeux. L'étude de la métis dans l'Odyssée révèle l'importance de la fonction poétique du jeu dans la Grèce archaïque This study is an extension of Marcel Detienne and Jean-Pierre Vernant's reflexion on métis in poetic's field. As a narrative of contests, Odyssey is the ideal setting for a poetic expression of métis. Odysseus and Penelope are crafty, they share a homophrosuné, an egality and a compliticity of cunning. They are also, polukerdeièsin, they have a penchant, a tropism, for the tricks. They are one when it cornes to making a profit. The term that we thought most appropriate to account for Odysseus and Penelope's intelligence is kerdosuné, the clever efficiency, the profit (kerdos) motive. The challenge of epic contests is the restoration of the recognition, the charis. Odysseus tricks to find his place in the oikos, to be acknowledged by his relatives. The epic song participates in this project of charis protection and preservation. Il is an expedient, a pharmakon epistrophon wich « turns » (translation of epistréphein) the hearts toward the euphrôn, the cheer. The study of métis in the Odyssey reveals the importance of the poetic function of the game in the Ancient Greece

La modernité est donc indissociable du mouvement et du changement. Dans les œuvres de Flaubert qui portent sur la modernité, dans les écrits sur l'art de Baudelaire et dans certaines vues urbaines et architecturales, tant littéraires que picturales, dont la série de La Cathédrale de Rouen de Monet, les formes de la simplicité et les notions afférentes permettent de mettre en évidence les formes du changement, afin de composer une esthétique de la modernité fondée sur la nuance plutôt que sur la binarité ou le dogmatisme. Si la simplicité désigne l'indécomposable, la nuance se caractérise en effet par des différences de degrés quasiment indiscernables. L'art de la nuance qui procède d'une réévaluation moderne de la simplicité fait tenir ensemble la défense du beau, la singularité de l'œuvre d'art, l'attention portée au réel, aux savoirs et aux nouvelles temporalités, afin d'éloigner l'esthétisation, c'est-à-dire une conception du beau qui lisse les traits de la modernité. La nuance témoigne ainsi d'une relation inédite entre le visuel et le verbal, le texte et l'image, qui permet de mettre au jour les nouages entre poétique, esthétique et politique au coeur de la modernité The peculiarity of modernity is to integrate criticism in its foundations and to allow questions as well as knowledge development. Therefore, modernity cannot be dissociated from movement and change. Thus, it implies a new kind of social, political and cultural relationship beween the singular and the collective, the particular and the universal, a complexity which XlXth literature managed to testify. However, it is noteworhy that the notion of simplicity is at the centre of the preoccupations of founder authors of artistic and literary modernity. In Flaubert's works dealing with modernity, Baudelaire's written works on arts and in urban views, either literary, pictorial or architectural ones, for instance Monet's series of The Rouen Cathedral, the simplicity forms and meanings which are associated to them make it possible to put the forms of change in a conspicuous position in order to make up an aesthetics of modernity based on shade instead of on binarism or dogmatism. If simplicity refers to what cannot be broken down, the main features of shade are, indeed, grade differences which can hardly be detected. The art of shade which originates in a modern revaluation of simplicity holds together the defence of the beautiful, the singularity of the work of art, the attention to reality, knowledge and new temporalities in order to thwart aesthetization, in other words a conception of the beautiful that covers the features of modernity. Thus, shade shows a new relationship between the visual and the verbal, the text and the image, which brings up to date the knotting between poetics, aesthetics and politics at the heart of modernity

    Tous les éléments, textuels et visuels, de DDD de Paul Valéry participent à une mise en scène de l'instabilité, déjouant les attentes du lecteur. Pour ce faire Valéry fait usage d'une rhétorique, souvent classique, qui sait s'adjoindre les ressources du figural. Confronté à leurs effets, le lecteur doit accepter la déroute comme principe de lecture. Cet effet d'égarement est renforcé par une matière textuelle et visuelle dynamique. DDD, échappant à la clôture et à l'inertie, exige une perpétuelle circulation du regard. Des temporalités coexistent. La capacité de transformation de DDD suscite une interrogation sur la ligne mimique, en relation avec la "formule pathique" warburgienne. Altérant la figure humaine, la mimique entraîne une réflexion sur l'informe, dont Degas et Valéry jouent selon les moyens de leur art Degas, Danse, Dessin by Paul Valéry can't fail to surprise the reader : all the elemnts, both textual and visual, actually take part in a production of instability. That is why everything works towards presenting a text which is very far from the most conventional formal and hermeneutic expectations. Valéry is writing here for the reader to choose his own rhythm, even if i/he is subtly led according to the author's design. The taste of polymorphism -structural, narrative but also using the text-picture relations- is quite effective. to rich is aim, Valéry sets up a singular rhetoric, knowing how to take advantage of the material means of the book, confirming its suspensive function. The ressources of the figural, bursting in the order of the discourse, have to be associated with the rhetorical means. Between rhetoric and figural, the reader has to accept to be disconcerted. Moreover, some formal flexibility - structural, thematic and metaphorical - holds one's attention : the animal reference, for instance, conveys the energy of the movement, embodied by the figure of a dancer. DDD favours a visual reading, like a polyptych. The look has to circulate, letting different coexisting temporalities, which give to the form a real power of transformation. The latter conveys a questionning about the virtues of gesture. From the "gesture line" of Degas as the "movement of life found in the Greeks time" to the pathic formula, after the warburgian terminology, a relation of closeness has to be considered. Distorting the human figure, the gesture leads to a reflexion on the undefined, interval between two forms, that Degas and Valéry use according to the means of their art

    Cette thèse consiste à étudier un corpus d'images qui réunit des représentations de la maladie, des états pathologiques dans la production artistique de la Renaissance. La question principale est de savoir à quelles conditions il a pu y avoir une expression plastique de la maladie en fonction de deux données essentielles, soit, le fait que les artistes de la Renaissance travaillaient à élaborer une esthétique conforme aux théories de l'art de leur époque, en terme d'équilibre, de mesure et d'harmonie, et deuxièmement, le fait que la maladie constitue, par définition, un effet de force en perpétuelle transformation. Notre travail vise à montrer le déplacement que produit cet ordre de représentation par rapport au sens mimétique de l'oeuvre, ces écarts par rapport aux critères de ressemblance et d'imitation perturbant le modèle rhétorique qu balise le concept de représentation. Cette étude est une mise en rapport avec les théories de l'art et avec la pensée de Louis Marin This thesis is a study of the representation of disease in the visual arts of the Renaissance. The principal question which guided this reflexion is to learn under what conditions there could have been a plastic expression of disease according to two essential given points : firstly, the fact that the artists of the renaissance tried to create an esthetics in conformity with the theories of art of their time in terms of balance, measurement and harmony, and secondly, the fact that disease constitues, by definition, an effect of force in perpetual transformation. Starting from the idea that the representation of the pathological states in Renaissance art serves an apologetic function which largely exceeds that of simple descritpion, the thesis aims at showing the displacement which produces this order of representation compared to the mimetic direction of the image. Ulysse et Pénélope sont rusés, ils partagent une homophrosunè, une égalité et une complicité d'intelligence. Ils sont, également, polukerdeièsin, ils ont un penchant, un tropisme, pour les astuces. Ils ne font qu'un quand il s'agit de tirer un profit. Le terme qui nous a semblé le plus approprié pour rendre compte de l'intelligence d'Ulysse et de Pénélope est kerdosuné, l'astucieuse efficacité, la recherche du profit (kerdos). L'enjeu des épreuves épiques est le rétablissement de la reconnaissance, de la charis. Ulysse ruse pour retrouver sa place au sein de l'oikos, pour être reconnu par les siens. Le chant épique participe à cette entreprise de protection et de maintien de la charis. Il est un expédient, un pharmakon epistrophon qui « fait tourner » (traduction d'epistréphein) les cœurs vers l'euphrosuné, l'état joyeux. L'étude de la métis dans l'Odyssée révèle l'importance de la fonction poétique du jeu dans la Grèce archaïque This study is an extension of Marcel Detienne and Jean-Pierre Vernant's reflexion on métis in poetic's field. As a narrative of contests, Odyssey is the ideal setting for a poetic expression of métis. Odysseus and Penelope are crafty, they share a homophrosuné, an egality and a compliticity of cunning.
