Midrash is arguably the most ancient genre of Jewish literature, forming a voluminous body of scriptural exegesis over the course of centuries. There is hardly anything in the ancient rabbinic universe that was not taught through this medium. The diversity & development of that creative profusion are presented here in a new light. This text covers a broad range of texts, from late antiquity to the modern period & from all the centres of literary creativity, including non-rabbinic & non-Jewish literature, so that the full extent of the modes & transformations of Midrash can be fully appreciated. An introduction situates Midrash in its historical & cultural setting, pointing to creative adaptations within the tradition & providing a sense of the variety of genres & applications discussed in the body of the work.

In spite of debatable issues, such as metre, we now know enough about classical Hebrew poetry to be able to understand how it was composed. This large-scale manual, rich in detail, exegesis and bibliography, provides guidelines for the analysis and appreciation of Hebrew verse. Topics include oral poetry, metre, parallelism and forms of the strophe and stanza. Sound patterns and imagery are also discussed. A lengthy chapter sets out a whole range of other poetic devices and the book closes with a set of worked examples of Hebrew poetry. Throughout, other ancient Semitic verse has been used for comparison and the principles of modern literary criticism have been applied.
