    Die sogenannte »kritische Aneignung« Heinrich von Kleists in der DDR zeigt das breitgefächerte Bild einer Jahrzehnte andauernden Kulturdebatte: vom anfänglichen Ausschluss seiner Werke aus dem Kanon über ihre Instrumentalisierung für Propagandazwecke in den 1950er Jahren hin zur Vorbildnahme Kleists durch Autor_innen in den 1970ern, die ihre Autorschaftskrise in ihm spiegelten. Durch die Aufbereitung neuen Archivmaterials von Kleist-Inszenierungen und durch die literarischen Bearbeitungen von Kleists Werken und seiner Biographie kann Stephan Ehrig neue Erkenntnisse über die vielfältige Kulturszene der DDR gewinnen und einen Beitrag dazu leisten, das einseitige Verständnis von DDR-Kultur als entweder regimetreu oder regimekritisch zu überwinden.     Audiences for contemporary German film and television are becoming increasingly transnational, and depictions of German cultural history are moving beyond the typical post-war focus on Germany’s problematic past. Entertaining German Culture explores this radical shift, building on recent research into transnational culture to argue that a new process of internal and external cultural reabsorption is taking place through areas of mutually assimilating cultural exchange such as streaming services, an increasingly international film market, and the import and export of Anglo-American media formats.

    Die sogenannte »kritische Aneignung« Heinrich von Kleists in der DDR zeigt das breitgefächerte Bild einer Jahrzehnte andauernden Kulturdebatte: vom anfänglichen Ausschluss seiner Werke aus dem Kanon über ihre Instrumentalisierung für Propagandazwecke in den 1950er Jahren hin zur Vorbildnahme Kleists durch Autor_innen in den 1970ern, die ihre Autorschaftskrise in ihm spiegelten. Durch die Aufbereitung neuen Archivmaterials von Kleist-Inszenierungen und durch die literarischen Bearbeitungen von Kleists Werken und seiner Biographie kann Stephan Ehrig neue Erkenntnisse über die vielfältige Kulturszene der DDR gewinnen und einen Beitrag dazu leisten, das einseitige Verständnis von DDR-Kultur als entweder regimetreu oder regimekritisch zu überwinden.     Practices of community-building in a globalised context Urban neighbourhoods have come to occupy the public imagination as a litmus test of migration, with some areas hailed as multicultural success stories while others are framed as ghettos. In an attempt to break down this dichotomy, Exploring the Transnational Neighbourhood filters these debates through the lenses of geography, anthropology, and literary and cultural studies. By establishing the interdisciplinary concept of the 'transnational neighbourhood', it presents these localities – whether Clichy-sous-Bois, Belfast, El Segundo Barrio or Williamsburg – as densely packed contact zones where disparate cultures meet in often highly asymmetrical relations, producing a constantly shifting local and cultural knowledge about identity, belonging, and familiarity. Exploring the Transnational Neighbourhood offers a pivotal response to one of the key questions of our time: How do people create a sense of community within an exceedingly globalised context? By focusing on the neighbourhood as a central space of transcultural everyday experience within three different levels of discourse (i.e., the virtual, the physical local, and the transnational-global), the multidisciplinary contributions explore bottom-up practices of community-building alongside cultural, social, economic, and historical barriers.     Die sogenannte »kritische Aneignung« Heinrich von Kleists in der DDR zeigt das breitgefächerte Bild einer Jahrzehnte andauernden Kulturdebatte: vom anfänglichen Ausschluss seiner Werke aus dem Kanon über ihre Instrumentalisierung für Propagandazwecke in den 1950er Jahren hin zur Vorbildnahme Kleists durch Autor_innen in den 1970ern, die ihre Autorschaftskrise in ihm spiegelten. Durch die Aufbereitung neuen Archivmaterials von Kleist-Inszenierungen und durch die literarischen Bearbeitungen von Kleists Werken und seiner Biographie kann Stephan Ehrig neue Erkenntnisse über die vielfältige Kulturszene der DDR gewinnen und einen Beitrag dazu leisten, das einseitige Verständnis von DDR-Kultur als entweder regimetreu oder regimekritisch zu überwinden Reception of Kleist in literature, theater and cultural politics of the former GDR.
