    Ce recueil d'articles interroge les rapports d'écart et de proximité de la littérature avec le mythe. Le concept même de mythe est pourtant difficilement définissable, voire profondément paradoxal, tant il est vrai qu'il désigne, dans le discours commun, aussi bien un récit à caractère sacré que la fausseté d'une conception et, dans le discours savant, aussi bien une fiction qui toucherait à un point de vérité que la manifestation d'une fixité idéologique. Nous n'avons finalement du mythe que des approches et des interprétations. Chacun des travaux de ce volume démontre la variété des formes que peuvent prendre les points de croisement entre la littérature et le mythe à travers la littérature anglo-saxonne. Certains auteurs se sont interrogés sur la production de grands mythes littéraires aussi bien que sur la dénonciation des constructions idéologiques qu'ils servent, en passant par les mythologies propres à l'expérience littéraire ou cinématographique, ou encore la subversion des idéaux du mythe par le texte et les rapports de rivalité que la littérature peut entretenir avec le mythe. À l'inverse, les autres ont voulu montrer que le texte littéraire prend parfois appui sur le mythe et sa poétique à des fins de subversion ou pour en retrouver la puissance symbolique au-delà du chaos de la modernité - ainsi le mythe peut-il prendre valeur de modèle et le texte trouver appui sur son mode d'énonciation pour revivifier la langue et renouer avec sa capacité à toucher au hors-sens de la vérité. Ce parcours illustre dès lors les différents visages sous lesquels se présente le mythe et convie le lecteur à réfléchir plus avant sur ce que l'écriture littéraire lui emprunte, en quoi elle reste en deçà du mythe ou nous porte au-delà de lui selon qu'il intervient sur le versant de la fixité des images ou de la force d'une vérité au-delà des mots.

Jouant des écarts spatiotemporels permettant toutes sortes de circulations spatiales ou signifiantes, elle instaure un mode de communication spécifique au sein du film mais aussi avec le spectateur. Si l'adaptation de récits épistolaires à l'écran reste une gageure, certains cinéastes n'hésitent pas à concevoir leur film comme une lettre adressée à l'absent, que ce soit le père défunt chez Nathaniel Kahn, Dieu chez Neil Jordan ou le futur spectateur chez Jonas Mekas. L'écriture épistolaire rejoint ici celle du journal intime, toutes deux centrées sur l'écriture de soi dans le moment présent. De la missive insérée dans le film au film conçu comme lettre, les articles de ce recueil proposent donc une exploration de l'écriture épistolaire à l'écran dans le domaine du cinéma anglophone, jusqu'à la signature et autres inscriptions du nom propre, clôture de l'identité et du courrier.
