    Main description: Mit dem Paratext-Begriff hat Gérard Genette ein Instrument von erheblicher literatur-, kultur- und medientheoretischer Reichweite zur Verfügung gestellt. Daß sie noch unterschätzt wird, dafür dürfte die philologische Bescheidenheit mitverantwortlich sein, mit der die Kategorie eingeführt wurde. Nur zu gern hat man Genettes Rede vom Paratext als bloßem "Beiwerk des Buches" - im Unterschied zum "eigentlichen" Text - wörtlich genommen. Nimmt man das Konzept aber ernst, bleibt buchstäblich keines der Elemente eines Werks oder Buchs von paratextuellen Qualitäten unberührt. Und insofern paratextuellen Phänomenen ein für jede Lektüre, allgemein jede Rezeption weichenstellender Status zukommt, geht ihre Beobachtung keineswegs auf Randständiges, sondern tatsächlich aufs Ganze: Paratexte organisieren die Kommunikation von Texten überhaupt. Die unter dieser These im vorgelegten Buch eröffnete Diskussion antwortet nicht zuletzt auf einen gegenwartsdiagnostischen Befund: In vielen medialen Kontexten ist eine rasante Ausdifferenzierung paratextueller Strategien zu beobachten. Ein besonderer Akzent des Bandes liegt im intermedialen Vergleich von Literatur, Film und Fernsehen sowie in einer entsprechenden Verschränkung interdisziplinärer Perspektiven. Wenn dabei konkurrierende Theorieansätze zu Wort kommen, wie sie in der aktuellen kulturwissenschaftlichen Debatte vertreten sind, so ist es kein Zufall, daß immer wieder Grundkonzeptionen der beteiligten Disziplinen thematisiert werden: vom Autor-, Werk- und Text- bis hin zum Kommunikations- und Medienbegriff. Ebenso wenig zufällig, sondern ein Zeugnis für das Potential des von Genette vorgeschlagenen Begriffs ist es jedoch, daß alle Beiträge die fällige theoretische Diskussion mit insistenten, teilweise mikrologisch präzisen materialen Analysen engzuführen verstehen

Dabei bezieht sie sich auf ein Phänomen, dessen operative und physiologische Bestimmung in Frage steht. Denn wo dieser Sinn anatomisch zu verorten und wie seine Funktion zu spezifizieren sei, stellt sich in Anbetracht der diskutierten Ansätze vor allem als ein Problem dar. Das zugrundegelegte Korpus umfasst literarische, philosophische und naturkundliche Texte. Diese werden einer Lektüre unterzogen, die unter Rekurs auf systematische Begriffe die Vielschichtigkeit des Gegenstandes auszuloten ermöglicht The study describes the conceptual and metaphorical field relating to what figures in the Enlightenment as the sense of touch/feeling. In so doing it homes in on a phenomenon whose operative and physiological definition is anything but straightforward. The approaches discussed here indicate the problems involved in situating this sense in anatomical terms and specifying its function. The corpus of texts underlying the study is taken from literature, philosophy, and natural history. These are subjected to a reading that makes it possible to examine the complex nature of the issue in question by drawing upon systematic concepts

    Der Essay analysiert den Aufsatz über die Plastik von J. G. Herder im Hinblick auf das Verhältnis von Sehen und Fühlen, Außen und Innen, Oberfläche und Körper, Malerei und Skulptur in der ästhetischen Theorie der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts. Herders Intention ist die Begründung einer autonomen Bildhauerkunst aus der Physiologie des Tastsinnes, der jedoch nicht in Form des Berührens realisiert wird, sondern im visuellen Nachvollzug beim Betrachten der Statue. Charakteristikum der Plastik wäre demzufolge nicht nur die Kompaktheit des Körpers, sondern die damit in ein Spannungsverhältnis tretende Gegliedertheit, das Beiwerk. In dieser Spannung zwischen Haupt- und Beiwerk, Erga und Parerga bilden die Kleider von Statuen an sich einen toten, die Wirkung des "lebenden" Körpers störenden Zusatz. Die "nassen" Gewänder der griechischen Statuen allerdings seien als Parerga gerade so "transparent", dass sie wie eine zweite Haut erscheinen. Parerga dieser Art bilden jedoch keinen überflüssigen, störenden, sondern vielmehr notwendigen Bestandteil der plastischen Kunst, indem sie das organische Innere, das auf den Tod verweist, bedecken, ohne es völlig zu verleugnen. This article analyses J. G. Herder’s essay on sculpture, particularly the relation between seeing and feeling, outside and inside, surface and body, painting and sculpture in aesthetic theory in the second half of the 18th century. Herder’s intention is the foundation of autonomous sculptural art upon the physiology of touch, not performed, however, through the act of touching, but through visual imitation, by observing the statue. In this sense, the distinctiveness of sculpture would not only be the compactness of the body but the tense relationship between compactness and its articulation, the accessories. In the tension between work and accessories – erga and parerga –, the clothes of statues constitute a "dead" addition, that disturbs the effect of the "living" body. The "wet" clothes of antique statues, on the other hand, would be so "transparent", that they would appear as a second skin. Parerga of this kind would not represent something superfluous and inconvenient, but rather a necessary element of sculptural art, by covering – yet not completely denying – the organic interior that refers to death.
