    Using data from the German Structure of Earnings Survey (GSES), this paper studies the role of changes in working hours for the increase in male and female earnings inequality between 2001 and 2010. We provide both classic decompositions of the variance of log earnings into the variances of hours, wage rates and their covariance, and decompositions based on reweighting the conditional hours distribution. Depending on the inequality measure considered, our results suggest that between 10 and 30 percent of the increase in male earnings inequality and 37 to 47 percent of the increase in female earnings inequality can be explained by changes in working hours. In addition, a large part of the inequality increase can be accounted for by changes in the composition of person and firm characteristics.

    This paper studies the consequences of a curriculum reform of the last two years of high school in one of the German federal states on the share of male and female students who complete degrees in STEM subjects and who later work in STEM occupations. The reform had two important aspects: (i) it equalized all students' exposure to math by making advanced math compulsory in the last two years of high school; and (ii) it roughly doubled the instruction time and increased the level of instruction in math and the natural sciences for some 80 percent of students, more so for females than for males. Our results provide some evidence that the reform had positive effects on the share of men completing STEM degrees and later working in STEM occupations but no such effects for women. The positive effects for men appear to be driven by a positive effect for engineering and computer science, which was partly counteracted by a negative effect for math and physics.

    Auch im Fünften Armuts- und Reichtumsbericht wird die Analyse fortgesetzt, wie die Einkommen und Vermögen privater Haushalte und Personen verteilt sind und wie sich diese Verteilungen entwickelt haben. Dabei wurden gegenüber den vorhergehenden Studien Aktualisierungen und eine behutsame Weiterentwicklung vorgenommen. Die Analyse ermittelt auch die Ursachen für Verteilungsänderungen und betrachtet die Verteilungsergebnisse vor dem Hintergrund der gesamtwirtschaftlichen und gesellschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen und eingeleiteter gesetzgeberischer Maßnahmen. In dieser Form erstmal vorgenommen ist die detaillierte Untersuchung von "Reichtum und Konsum" unter besonderer Berücksichtigung von Konsummustern am oberen Ende der Verteilung. Mit diesem innovativen Ansatz werden Luxusgüter identifiziert und typische Konsummuster reicher Haushalte aufgedeckt.
