    Maurice Blanchot (1907–2003) was one of the most important writers of the twentieth century. His novels, shorter narratives, literary criticism, and fragmentary texts exercised enormous influence over several generations of writers, artists, and philosophers. In works such as Thomas the Obscure, The Instant of my Death, The Writing of the Disaster, The Unavowable Community, Blanchot produced some of the most incisive statements of what it meant to experience the traumas and turmoils of the twentieth century.As a journalist and political activist, Blanchot had a public side that coexisted uneasily with an inclination to secrecy, a refusal of interviews and photographs, and a reputation for mysteriousness and seclusion. These public and private Blanchots came together in complicated ways at some of the twentieth century's most momentous occasions. He was among the public intellectuals participating in the May ’68 revolution in Paris and helped organize opposition to the Algerian war. During World War II, he found himself moments away from being executed by the Nazis. More controversially, he had been active in far-right circles in the ’30s.Now translated into English, Christophe Bident’s magisterial, scrupulous, much-praised critical biography provides the first full-length account of Blanchot’s itinerary, drawing on unpublished letters and on interviews with the writer’s close friends. But the book is both a biography and far more. Beyond filling out a life famous for its obscurity, Bident’s book will transform the way readers of Blanchot respond to this major intellectual figure by offering a genealogy of his thought, a distinctive trajectory that is at once imaginative and speculative, at once aligned with literary modernity and a close companion and friend to philosophy.The book is also a historical work, unpacking the ‘transformation of convictions’ of an author who moved from the far-right in the 1930s to the far-left in the 1950s and after. Bident’s extensive archival research explores the complex ways that Blanchot’s work enters into engagement with his contemporaries, making the book also a portrait of the circles in which he moved, which included friends such as Georges Bataille, Marguerite Duras, Emmanuel Levinas, Michel Foucault, and Jacques Derrida.Finally, the book traces the strong links between Blanchot’s life and an oeuvre that nonetheless aspires to anonymity. Ultimately, Bident shows how Blanchot’s life itself becomes an oeuvre—becomes a literature that bears the traces of that life secretly.     Cette thèse cherche à interroger une notion-clé des écrits de Maurice Blanchot, aussi bien difficile que délicate, et très peu mise en question par la théorie et la critique littéraires contemporaines : le neutre. Blanchot y reconnaît la condition essentielle de la littérature, mais cette notion semble se soustraire à toute approche théorique de type dialectique. Échappant à toute forme d'affirmation ou de négation, de présence ou d'absence, d'objectivité ou de subjectivité, comment peut-on alors s'y rapporter, comment s'en approcher, quel type de discours en permettrait une juste entente, philosophique et littéraire? Si une telle série de questions réclame une entente du neutre pour ainsi dire « frontale » et pas moins vouée à l'échec, j'ai tenté de l'aborder par le détour de ses effets en procédant, par des analyses ponctuelles, à une sorte de po(i)étique de la manière dont le neutre se présente chez Blanchot, de nature à rendre possible une double distanciation : d'abord, en deçà des effets de lecture et de pensée suscités par le neutre, comment se présente la lettre de Blanchot, de quel type de rhétorique se soutient-elle, dans les récits, les fragments et l'écriture «critique»? Je me suis ensuite intéressée à l'accueil que les œuvres de Levinas et Derrida réservent à la question du neutre : manière d'observer chez deux auteurs qui entretiennent avec l'œuvre de Blanchot un rapport difficile, le pli que font dans la pensée, l'entente, la distance et l'écriture, le long d'une lecture appelée ici dans les traces The Ph.D. thesis The manners and the effects of the Neutral. Reading Blanchot in the traces of Levinas and Derrida aims at exploring the meaning and uses of a key concept in Maurice Blanchot's theoretical writings: the neutral, a notion difficult to seize and seldom discussed in recent literary theory. In Blanchot's view, the neutral is the fundamental ontological condition of literature, but to analyze his way of understanding it is a challenging task, since the neutral is impossible to tackle by means of a dialectic approach. In these circumstances, a direct conceptual analysis cannot but fail, and that is why I opted for a methodological reduction which enabled me to consider the neutral from an "oblique" perspective. The primary question my thesis tries to answer is therefore not "What is the neutral?", but "What does the neutral do?" (i.e. what are the effects it produces), and how (in what manner it acts). From my point of view, this strategy creates a double critical distance: on the one hand, the diverse consequences the neutral had in the field of post-war French literature and philosophy notwithstanding, it allows me to deal with Blanchot's writing, that is with the rhetoric it is based upon in both his fiction and his essays; on the other hand, my analysis of the place and reception of such a notion in Levinas' and Derrida's works allows me to understand and stress out the fold that critical insight, conceptual detachment and writing create in their thought, given their complex relationship with Blanchot's oeuvre

    La thèse lance un regard théorique et critique sur deux préoccupations conceptuelles-clés de cette recherche en théorie littéraire. L'axe théorique explore un territoire épistémologique qui encercle le geste théorique et critique de Maurice Blanchot et celui-ci exerce une puissance de lecture sans égale dans la théorie littéraire contemporaine, surtout la française, et cherche ses affiliations les plus proches. L'axe critique, finalement, opère conceptuellement, à travers les termes : épreuve critique, théâtralité machinique de la littérature ; une expérience de lecture dans le ton poststructuraliste de La passion selon G.H. de Clarice Lispector et Thomas l'obscur de Maurice Blanchot, des textes qui mettent-en-scène, dans leurs voix narratives, une littérature pensante. Aussi bien l'axe théorique que l'axe critique se font dans une espèce d'entrelacement qui cherche à promouvoir une situation de lecture avec l'image d'un geste théâtral qui métaphorise, de façon « machinique » (rapports de l'écriture littéraire avec la propre expérience du désir de subjectivation), l'expérience de l'écriture littéraire comme l' épreuve d'une situation esthétique au-delà d'un travail structurellement sémiotique. Corps écrivain et Corpus fictionnel opèrent, au seuil de l'image de leur intersection, le désir de la critique de s'immiscer dans le processus paradoxal, volatil et transubjectif où une voix narrative souveraine et, souvent, fragmentaire, favorise et fait allusion à des mouvements qui signalisent, aussi bien une gestualité de l'écriture, qu'une théâtralité d'effets corporés, qui viennent des scènes et de la complexité poétique, agonique et philosophique qui (se) met-en-scène à partir des récits fictionnels mentionnés ci-dessus The thesis brings a critical and theoretical look on two essential conceptual concerns of this research in literary theory. The theoretical line that explores this epistemic territory which surrounds Maurice Blanchot's critical and theoretical gesture, of which exert a unique potential of reading in contemporary theoretical literature, mainly French, and seeks it's filiation in others. The critical line, eventually, operates conceptually, through the critical term epreuve and machinic theatrality of literature, a reading experience with post-structuralism basis of Clarice Lispector's A paixâo Segundo G.H. and Maurice Blanchot's Thomas l'Obscur, texts that act as a thoughtful literature in their narrative voices. Both the theoretical and critical lines exist in an entanglement that tries to promote a reading situation that we bond with the image of a theatrical gesture that metaphorizes in a machinic way (relative of the literary writing as a self experience of the desire of subjectivity) the experience of literary writing like the epreuve of an aesthetics situation beyond the structurally semiotic work. Body writer and corpus fiction operate, at the basis of the image of their intersection, the desire of the critics in interfering in the paradoxical process, volatile and trans-subjective in which a sovereign narrative voice and many times fragmented promotes and alludes movements that signalize as much a gestuality of the writing as a theatricality of the body effects that start from scenes and from the poetic complexity, agonic and philosophical which performs (itself) embodies from the fictional reports mentioned above

    Le théâtre nondramatique désigne une conception et une pratique du théâtre propre aux avant-gardes historiques parisiennes, et plus particulièrement à Gertrude Stein, aux dadaïstes et aux surréalistes. Bien qu'elles soient davantage connues pour leurs autres pratiques comme la littérature, la poésie ou la peinture, voire pour leur refus de la catégorie d'art même, le théâtre semble cependant hanter leurs productions et leurs discours. Par le refus des conventions du théâtre dramatique - de la structure narrative à la présence de personnages et à celle d'acteurs pour les incarner - Gertrude Stein, Dada et le surréalisme développent tous à leur façon une oeuvre théâtrale critique qui forment ensemble un panorama de l'antithéâtralisme propre à la modernité, mais aussi un répertoire des alternatives et variantes pensées par rapport au théâtre. Les théâtres de Gertrude Stein, de Dada et des surréalistes sont analysés au prisme des révolutions scientifiques et philosophiques de leur époque, parmi lesquelles les théories de William James se révèlent fondamentales. Dans ce contexte, les "conversation" et "landscape plays" de Stein, les soirées dadaïstes et les nombreux manifestes, comme leurs pièces de théâtre sont compris comme autant de tentatives de redéfinir le théâtre. Le théâtre nondramatique est ainsi compris comme un ensemble de théâtralités fondées sur la redéfinition de l'acte théâtral, comme la primauté du verbe, celle de l'acte performatif, et de la refonte de la communication théâtrale entre l'oeuvre et le spectateur-lecteur. De nouvelles définitions du sujet et du théâtre se font alors jour au carrefour des trois concepts esthétiques fondamentaux pour les avant-gardes : la métâthéâtralité comprise comme métalepse ontologique, la simultanéité et enfin le primitivisme Nondramatic theater refers to a theatrical conception and an artistic practice developed by the historical Parisian avant-gardes, and more precisely by Gertrude Stein, Dadaists, and surrealists. Even though they are more commonly acknowledged for their other achievements in literature, poetry or painting, or even for their rejection of art as a category, yet, theater seems to haunt their productions and discourse. By their refusal of dramatic conventions - from the narrative structure, to the characters and the actors to incarnate them - Gertrude Stein, Dada and surrealism all develop their own critical theatrical works which form together a panorama of the antitheatricalism proper to the Modern era, but also some alternatives and variations to it thought in relation to theater. The plays by Gertrude Stein, Dada and Surreaslim are analyzed through the lens of the scientific and philosophical revolutions of their time, among which William James' theories are fundamental. Stein's conversation and landscape plays, but also the Dada evenings and the numerous manifestoes, can be considered as a variety of attempts to redefine what is theater. Nondramatic theater is thus understood as a set of theatricalities based on the redefinition of the theatrical art, like the primacy of speech, of the performative act, and the revision of the theatrical communication between the artwork and the spectator-reader. New definitions of the subject and of the theater reveal themselves at the crossroads of three aesthetical concepts that are fundamental for the avant-garde : metatheatricality understood as an ontological metalepsis, simultaneity, and finally Primitivism

    II a souvent été dit de l'œuvre de Jean-Luc Lagarce qu'il s'agissait d'un théâtre du ressassement, qui exprimait un mal à dire, avec une thématique récurrente autour du retour, de la famille et de la mort, articulés par une philosophie de l'arrangement. Il est vrai qu'il y a dans la ligne dramatique de son théâtre et dans ses figures, des échos, inter et intratextuels liés à ces thématiques. S'il y a, certes, une tentative d'arrangement c'est-à-dire de besoin de réconciliation, ce ne sera pas pour revenir en arrière mais pour ajuster un présent dans le présent adoptant pour ce faire, une réflexion circulaire. Ainsi, nous analyserons l'espace et le temps, la fable et les figures selon trois manifestations circulaires : la roue, l'onde sphérique divergente et le cylindre. Celles-ci montreront une œuvre lagarcienne qui ne progresse ni linéairement ni chronologiquement mais circulairement It has often been said that Jean-Luc Lagarce's plays were based on brooding over, expressing an « ill at speech », with recurring themes around homecoming, family and death, and a philosophy of conciliation. Echoes of such themes can actually be found in his drama and its characters, within or between the Unes. But if attempts to appease express a need to reconcile, they are not connected to the past but to an adjusted present with circular reflection. We will thus analyse space and time, fable and characters according to three circular expressions: the wheel, diverging spherical wave and the cylinder, showing that Largace's works progress in circles, as opposed to linear or chronological movements
