    This book presents the outcomes of a multi-methodical investigation of the processes of literacy acquisition. The focus is on mono- and bilingual first- and seventh-graders in schools in socially underprivileged areas of two major cities in Turkey and Germany. By means of extensive analyses of lesson videos, linguistic tests, interviews and ethnographic research, social, cultural, linguistic, pedagogic and didactic differences on the international, national, local and individual level are aligned with the momentary problem of exercising a school lesson and acquiring literacy on a daily basis. The results contradict to some degree that cultural and linguistic differences actually make a huge difference in the organisation and process of literacy acquisition. With the interdisciplinary background of the book, it addresses academics concerned with migration sociology, migration linguistics, classroom research, and bilingual education. In a broader perspective, the book contributes to the pedagogically and politically significant question how social and cultural characteristics of specific groups are stereotyped and partly unjustly combined in order to reach symbolic solutions for actual problems.

    Die Autorin des Initialbeitrags, die Bremer Migrations- und Bildungsforscherin Dita Vogel, erläutert in ihrem Text „Drei Sprachen sind genug fürs Abitur!“ einen Reformvorschlag für den Abbau der Diskriminierung von mehrsprachig Aufgewachsenen. Kernpunkte des Vorschlags umfassen einen Rechtsanspruch auf Anerkennung der Familiensprache als prüfungsrelevante zweite Fremdsprache sowie Reformen der Organisation und Gestaltung des schulischen Sprachunterrichts. Der damit verbundene Vorschlag zur Anerkennung gesellschaftlicher Viel- und Mehrsprachigkeit geht mit der bildungssprachlichen Aufwertung der Potentiale einher, die Schüler*innen aus ihrem familiensprachlichen Umfeld in die Schule einbringen. In sechs Kommentaren haben sich sachkundige RfM-Mitglieder und Nicht-Mitglieder intensiv und konstruktiv mit den Vorschlägen auseinandergesetzt. Aus der Sicht ihrer jeweiligen Disziplinen – der Rechtwissenschaft, Erziehungswissenschaft und Sprachwissenschaft - ergänzen die Expert*innen den Blick auf die schulische Bildung und stellen Vorschläge für weiterführende Gestaltung der Rahmenbedingungen des Sprachenunterrichts dar. In einem weiteren Beitrag werden die Ideen aus einer praxisorientierten gewerkschaftlichen Perspektive kommentiert und fortgesetzt. Die abschließende Replik der Autorin des Initialbeitrags geht auf die Kommentare ein und schlägt die Erprobung der Vorschläge in wissenschaftlich begleiteten Modellprojekten vor.

With the interdisciplinary background of the book, it addresses academics concerned with migration sociology, migration linguistics, classroom research, and bilingual education. In a broader perspective, the book contributes to the pedagogically and politically significant question how social and cultural characteristics of specific groups are stereotyped and partly unjustly combined in order to reach symbolic solutions for actual problems.

    Institutionen – von der Schule über Behörden und Organisationen bis hin zur Gesundheitsversorgung – stellen gesellschaftliche Apparate dar, die ein Potenzial haben, mehrsprachige Praxen zu implementieren oder aber monolinguale Praxen zu verstetigen. Seit den späten 1970er-Jahren untersucht die funktional-pragmatische Sprach- und Kommunikationsanalyse, kurz Funktionale Pragmatik (FP), das sprachliche Handeln in mehrsprachigen Gesellschaften und ihren Institutionen. Von Konrad Ehlich und Jochen Rehbein als integrale Handlungstheorie von Sprache entwickelt, haben sich funktional-pragmatische Fragestellungen und Analysen vielfältig und über Sprachgrenzen hinweg entfaltet. Die Beiträge diese Sammelbands führen von der grundlegenden theoretischen Auseinandersetzung mit Institution und Sprachgebrauch zu diversen Fallstudien und Untersuchungen, die sich auf der Grundlage funktional-pragmatischer Erkenntnisse mit Sprache und Mehrsprachigkeit in unterschiedlichen gesellschaftlichen und institutionellen Zusammenhängen befassen und die Bedeutung der FP im Kontext anderer theoretischer Konzepte ausloten.
