    Other ; After the opening of the country in the middle of the 19th century, Japan quickly moved towards becoming an industrialized world power. But the romanticist syndrome, imported from Europe by Mori Ogai since the 1890s, especially enchanted young intellectuals and drove their search of a Japanese cultural identity. The goal was, internally, to integrate the entire population, and externally, to make the country distinguishable from the »West« ─ paradoxically, in a spirit of European Romanticism. Takemitsu Morikawa investigates these remarkable developments and retraces the rise and canonization of the alleged self-image of modern Japan. ; Other ; Seit der Öffnung des Landes in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts bewegte sich Japan rasant auf dem Weg zur industrialisierten Weltmacht. Das dort seit den 1890er Jahren durch Mori Ogai aus Europa ›eingeführte‹ romantische Syndrom jedoch verzauberte insbesondere die jungen Intellektuellen und trieb sie zur Suche nach der japanischen kulturellen Identität an. Ziel war es, nach innen die gesamte Bevölkerung zu integrieren und nach außen das Land vom »Westen« unterscheidbar zu machen – und zwar paradoxerweise im Geist der europäischen Romantik. Takemitsu Morikawa geht diesen bemerkenswerten Entwicklungen auf den Grund und zeichnet die Entstehung und die Kanonisierung des vermeintlichen Selbstbildes des modernen Japan nach.

    Other ; Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s Garbage, The City, and Death. A Four Act Scandal in Post-war Germany The paper explores the dramaturgy of the scandals around the play Garbage, The City and Death (Der Müll, die Stadt und der Tod) by German playwright, theatre and film maker Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Published in 1976, the play immediately caused a scandal in West Germany, because it was accused of reproducing anti-Semitic stereotypes. The presentation sheds light on the different phases of the scandal and their historical and cultural contexts in post-war Germany – starting as a literary scandal in 1976, being transformed into a theatre scandal in the 1980ies and finally being dissolved by the German premiere in 2009. The paper is structured as follows: Act One: The Literary Scandal. Destroying Fassbinder’s Garbage, Act Two: Preventing the Staging of the Play, Act Three: Blocking the Opening Night, Act Four: Performing the Play in Germany. By analysing the dramaturgical structure of this specific scandal, the paper discusses the following hypotheses: 1. Scandals arise through the circulation of decontextualised information in public. This is due to either a lack of information about the actual object or incident being scandalised or a lack of information about the context of the object or incident. This lack is caused by the logic of the scandal itself: Because the play or the performance is prohibited, it has been withdrawn from the public, making it impossible to form a well-founded opinion on the controversy. 2. The scandal is driven forward by an emotionalising rhetoric built around the decontextualised information. 3. Once the gap of information is filled, the scandalising rhetoric turns into a rhetoric of irrelevance: Reviews of the first performance of Garbage, The City and Death in Germany considered the play hardly a matter of public concern.

    Other ; This paper explores the works of German film-maker Rosa von Praunheim during the AIDS crisis. In the 1980ies and 1990ies he produced several films portraying the gay communities in Germany and the USA in the face of AIDS. First, this paper analyses the cinematic techniques von Praunheim uses to criticise the German gay community and present the American practices of performing community as a role model for AIDS-activism. In a second step, the focus is put on von Praunheim’s autobiography and the rhetoric strategies he uses to participate in New York’s HIV-community, while being HIV-negative himself.

    Other ; Background The paper sheds light on the development of the cultural representation of HIV/AIDS in Germany, Austria and Switzerland from the 1980ies until present. It analyses the contribution of literature, theatre, and film to the public discourse about HIV/AIDS and characterises the rhetorical and iconographic strategies used to construct, represent, and discuss the disease and deal with it. The presentation shows which functions literature, theatre and film have performed within the HIV/AIDS discourse during the last 30 years in German speaking countries. Methods Having a background in Cultural Studies, Theatre Studies and German Studies the study uses methods from these disciplines to analyse the reception of aesthetic strategies – the ‘what’ and ‘how’ – of literary, theatrical and cinematic representations of HIV/AIDS on a micro level. On a macro level interdiscourse analysis (Jürgen Link) and sociological systems theory (Niklas Luhmann) are applied to describe the dramaturgical development of the HIV/AIDS discourse in German speaking countries. Results The public HIV/AIDS discourse in German speaking countries can be divided into seven stages characterised by different dominant modes of representing HIV/AIDS: exclusion and blame, prevention, integration, refuse of integration, apocalyptic scenarios, thrill, and normalisation. The dramaturgy of the HIV/AIDS discourse is initialised by the occurrence of the new disease in the 1980ies. In the first years it followed the pattern of historical epidemic discourses (plague, leprosy, syphilis). Since then, two major plotpoints have changed the structure of the discourse altogether: the discovery of the HI-Virus and the introduction of combined antiretroviral therapy. In the 21st century HIV/AIDS starts to become normalised. Nevertheless discrimination patterns known from the HIV/AIDS discourse of the 1980ies can be found again in medial representations. Conclusions The paper discusses the complex relationship between cultural and medical communication in the face of HIV/AIDS. Literature, theatre, and film perform different functions dealing with the disease: 1. feeding rhetorical and iconographic representations into the public discourse 2. observing and documenting the discourse about HIV/AIDS in the mass media 3. intervening in the public discourse through criticism or alternative interpretations 4. offering coping / passing strategies and strategies of assigning meaning to the disease.

    Das Compendium heroicum wird seit 2016 vom Sonderforschungsbereich 948 „Helden – Heroisierungen – Heroismen“ an der Universität Freiburg erstellt. Beteiligt sind Forscher zahlreicher geisteswissenschaftlicher Disziplinen, die kollaborativ Artikel verfassen und als digitale Open-Access-Publikation verfügbar machen. Als interdisziplinäres Referenzwerk bildet das Compendium heroicum den aktuellen Forschungsstand über Helden und Heldinnen ab. Es bietet Erläuterungen zu zahlreichen Einzelphänomenen des Heroischen, seiner Figuren, Funktionen, Medialität und Praxis. Dazu wählt es einen weiten historischen Ansatz, der von der Antike bis in die Gegenwart reicht, und eine überkulturelle Perspektive, die sich für die Bedeutung heroischer Figuren innerhalb und außerhalb europäischer Kontexte interessiert. Entwickelt wird das Compendium heroicum in einer Kooperation zwischen dem Sonderforschungsbereich 948 „Helden – Heroisierungen – Heroismen“ der Universität Freiburg und dem „Open Encylopedia System“ der Freien Universität Berlin. Es wird gefördert durch die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.

    Debunking of heroic figures is a form of deliberate de-heroization with the aim of destroying an existing heroic reputation. The means of debunking can be the direct revelation of characteristics or deeds that contradict the heroic reputation of a figure (e.g. in a biography), but debunking can also make use of elements of satire and parody. Debunking aims to expose not only the individual heroic figure’s weaknesses and flaws, but also their ideological environment, i.e. the underlying conception of the heroic as well as, in a broader sense, the system of thought and values from which the heroization emerged.

    Als heroische Präfiguration bezeichnen wir den Prozess der Referenzsetzung zwischen einer Ausgangsfigur (Präfigurant) und einer Zielfigur (Präfigurat) zu dem Zweck, der Zielfigur einen heroischen Status zu verleihen oder diesen Status abzusichern. Der Begriff geht zurück auf Hans Blumenberg, der unter Präfiguration eine mythische Denkform verstand, die als „singuläres Instrument der Rechtfertigung in schwach begründeten Handlungssituationen“ zum Tragen kommt. Mit Blumenberg verstehen wir Präfigurationen als ein Instrument legitimierender Rhetorik, das insbesondere dazu genutzt wird, Heroisierungen zu plausibilisieren und abzusichern. Denn die Bezugnahme auf eine Vorbildfigur ermöglicht es Akteuren, ihre transgressiven, umstrittenen und ggf. gewaltvollen Taten als heroisch zu rechtfertigen, und erlaubt es Gemeinschaften, ihren Heldenfiguren Akzeptanz zu verleihen und sie im kollektiven Gedächtnis zu verankern.

    In the following, the ‘will to endure’ is understood to mean a subject’s disposition (i) to resist the pressing physical or mental need in strenuous circumstances to give up or comply and (ii) to carry on in that given situation. That means while the ‘will to endure’ focuses on willingness and attitude, ‘enduring’ per se describes the act that follows from it. Using Max Weber’s broad notion of action, ‘enduring’ can be thought of as active, lasting action whenever a subjective meaning is associated with it, i.e. the action is intentional and not coincidental. In this sense, ‘enduring’ cannot be regarded as the postponing of a deed to be delivered on at a later time, but as the deed itself.

    Attempts to capture the terms ‘hero(ine)’ and ‘heroic’ in supertemporal and essentialist definitions are rooted in a subliminal need and seem obvious due to the persistence and topicality of the subject. However, heroic properties (and their theoretical analyses) are, as a vast number of studies on the subject shows, specific to a culture, group and era. To date, all-encompassing definitions have not been able to reflect this historicity. Against this background, a heuristic working definition and delimitation of the concept appear sensible and necessary. The definition of hero(ine) proposed herein is based on an understanding of ‘heroic’ as a culturally constructed, relational and processual phenomenon: hero(in)es substantially contribute to the establishment of collectively potent models of order, are created subject to certain social and historical conditions and are represented in various media. This understanding directs our attention towards the processes of heroization and heroism, i.e., firstly, towards the question of how a real (living or dead) person or a fictional character becomes a hero(ine) of a collective and, secondly, towards the collective guidance from and adoption of conduct considered heroic. Heroization and heroism occur within the framework of communicative processes that serve not only the social functionalisation of the heroic, but also have their own dynamic and creative power.

    Ein Vortrag zu „Repräsentationen des Alter(n)s in der Literatur der Gegenwart“ beschließt am Montag, 13. Juli 2015, das Studium Generale der Ruperto Carola im Sommersemester. Referentin ist Prof. Dr. Henriette Herwig vom Institut für Germanistik der Universität Düsseldorf. Die Literaturwissenschaftlerin geht in ihrem Vortrag vor allem auf die Darstellung von Demenz-Erkrankungen in autobiographischen, biographischen und fiktionalen Texten ein. Wie die Referentin erläutert, wird mit der Zunahme demenzieller Erkrankungen eine Grundannahme in Frage gestellt, die seit René Descartes Bestand hat: Die Fähigkeit zu denken und das eigenen Leben zu reflektieren gilt demnach als Voraussetzung der menschlichen Individualität und Identität. Diese Entwicklung erfordert laut Henriette Herwig eine Korrektur unseres Menschenbildes sowie neue Formen der Wahrnehmung und des Verstehens. In ihrem Vortrag wird die Literaturwissenschaftlerin zeigen, wie zeitgenössische Texte dem progressiven Verlust von Erinnerung, kognitiven Fähigkeiten, der Sprach- und Handlungskompetenz und damit auch der Autonomie und der Identität eine für Außenstehende nachvollziehbare Sprache geben. Leitend ist dabei die Frage, ob dieser Verlust durch eine verstärkte Akzeptanz emotionaler Ausdrucksformen kompensiert werden kann und wie diese Möglichkeit in den Texten umgesetzt wird. Das Thema „Anders altern: Kulturelle Vielfalt und Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten“ steht im Zentrum des Studium Generale, zu dem die Universität Heidelberg im Sommersemester 2015 einlädt. Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler der Ruperto Carola wie auch anderer Hochschulen im In- und Ausland beleuchten verschiedene Aspekte des Alterns aus Sicht ihrer jeweiligen Disziplinen. Das Spektrum der Vorträge reicht dabei vom Umgang mit dem Altern und alten Menschen in Asien über ethische Betrachtungen zum Alter bis hin zu Darstellungen des Themas in der zeitgenössischen Literatur.
