    Nach dem 11. September kam es zu zahlreichen Publikationen über den Islam und die Muslime, die versuchten, das (wieder neu entdeckte) muslimische Andere in Europa und den USA zu fassen. In ihren literarischen Werken zeigen diasporisch-muslimische Autor*innen die Komplexität muslimischen Lebens auf. In dieser Dissertation werden vier britisch-muslimische Narrative (Hanif Kureishis Black Album, Robin Yassin-Kassabs The Road from Damascus, Leila Aboulelas The Translator, und Diriye Osmans Fairytales for Lost Children) und vier amerikanisch-muslimische Narrative (Laila Lalamis The Moor's Account, Michael Muhammad Knights Taqwacores, Mohja Kahfs The Girl in the Tangerine Scarf und Sulayman X alias Nick Wilgus' Bilal's Bread) analysiert. Die ausgewählten Werke stellen nicht nur euro-amerikanische Normvorstellungen von Religion, Nation und Säkularismus infrage, sie zweifeln und widersetzen sich auch den vorherrschenden muslimischen Ansichten zu Geschlecht und Sexualität. ; In the aftermath of September 11, numerous publications on Islam and Muslims emerged that sought to capture the (rediscovered) Muslim Other in Europe and the United States. In their literary works, diasporic Muslim authors present the complexity of Muslim life. This dissertation examines four British Muslim narratives (Hanif Kureishi's Black Album, Robin Yassin-Kassab's The Road from Damascus, Leila Aboulela's The Translator, and Diriye Osman's Fairytales for Lost Children) and four American-Muslim narratives (Laila Lalami's The Moor's Account, Michael Muhammad Knight's Taqwacores, Mohja Kahf's The Girl in the Tangerine Scarf, and Sulayman X aka Nick Wilgus's Bilal's Bread). The selected works not only challenge Euro-American normative notions of religion, nation, and secularism, they also question and defy prevailing Muslim views on gender and sexuality.

    This book explores the formative correlations and inventive transmissions of Anglophone Arab representations ranging from early 20th century Mahjar writings to contemporary transnational Palestinian resistance art. Tracing multiple beginnings and seminal intertexts, the comparative study of dissonant truth-making presents critical readings in which the notion of cross-cultural translation gets displaced and strategic unreliability, representational opacity, or matters of act advance to essential qualities of the discussed works' aesthetic devices and ethical concerns. Questioning conventional interpretive approaches, Markus Schmitz shows what Anglophone Arab studies are and what they can become from a radically decentered relational point of view. Among the writers and artists discussed are such diverse figures as Rabih Alameddine, William Blatty, Kahlil Gibran, Ihab Hassan, Jabra Ibrahim Jabra, Emily Jacir, Walid Raad, Ameen Rihani, Edward Said, Larissa Sansour, and Raja Shehadeh.

    Das hier besprochene und inhaltlich zusammengefasste arabische Epos Sīrat al-Ḥākim bi-Amrillāh, dessen Entstehungszeit in die der späteren, städtischen siyar šaʽbīya fällt, reflektiert die Geschichte der Fatimidenkalifen, besonders die Vita des Herrschers al-Ḥākim bi-Amrillāh (reg. 969-1021) und seines Sohnes aẓ-Ẓāhir (reg. 1021-1036). Es ist in Handschriften überliefert, deren Datierungen vom 15. bis ins 19. Jh. reichen. Die epische, siyar-typische Ausarbeitung des historischen Stoffes lässt sich anhand von Sprache, narrativer Struktur, Länge des Stoffes, Thematik und selbstreferentieller Betrachtung feststellen. Das Werk lässt eine starke Bezugnahme der Verfasser auf historiographische, sunnitische Quellen aus der späten Aiyubiden- und Mamlukenzeit erkennen. Im Vergleich zeigt sich, dass diese genutzt wurden, um die fatimidische Geschichte umzudeuten und in den Kontext der kathartischen Erzählung vom Siegeszug eines triumphalen, orthodoxen Islams einzubetten. Ebenso lässt sich nachweisen, dass die Verfasser der Sīra ein recht breit angelegtes Fachwissen reproduzieren konnten und gelehrte Quellen kannten. Die abstrakte Darstellung der Handlung als eine Heldenreise ermöglicht den Vergleich mit anderen Vertretern des Genres und zeigt den markanten Unterschied in der Struktur, welcher durch die Figur des dichotomen, tragischen Helden al-Ḥākim zustande kommt, und wie das Dilemma aufgelöst wird. ; The dissertation addresses the rather unknown Arabian popular epic Sīrat al-Ḥākim bi-Amrillāh which is an urban representative of the later siyar shaʿbiyya and reflects the history of the Fatimid caliphs al-Ḥākim bi-Amrillāh (r. 969-1021) and his successors. The textual witnesses cover manuscripts from 15th to 19th century. The epic, siyar-specific composition of the historical material is characterized by language, narrative structure, extension, themes and motifs and self- reflection of the texts.
