While translation studies have gained importance in the global world since the turn of the millennium, specific case studies and close readings of actual translations have not been the center of attention. Therefore, our workshop will highlight the agency of translators contrary to their marginalized position in world literature.
The international workshop will concentrate on the experimental character of translations – a text form that is rarely considered as important as other forms of literary writing. We will analyze case studies of creative and experimental translations, mistranslations, and translation failures that undermine the often-valued fidelity of this text form and establish them as a text sui generis.
The program will include case studies from the 18th century to the present, from Goethe and Lacan to Paul Celan, and comprise texts in Portuguese, Persian, Dutch, Hebrew, and French.
