Stigmatization: Exploring Infertility in Latin American Literature and Cinema (NeMLA)
This panel explores the intricate portrayals of infertility in Latin American Literature and Cinema, focusing on stigmatization and its interplay with trauma and intersectionality. Infertility, often laden with societal and cultural implications, is a multifaceted issue that impacts individuals and communities in profound ways. Through the lens of literature and film, we will explore how narratives of infertility are crafted and how they confront and critique governmental regulations, prevailing social norms and gender expectations.
The panel welcomes papers that cover a diverse array of works from different Latin American countries and time periods, offering a comparative perspective on how infertility is represented across Latin American cultural landscapes. Papers must examine how authors and filmmakers depict the emotional and psychological toll of infertility, shedding light not only on the personal and collective experiences and consequences of those affected but also on the factors influencing its increase, including social, and environmental aspects. Therefore, central to the panel is the concept of intersectionality, which allows an understanding of how various axes of identity—such as gender, ethnicity, class, and sexuality—interact and shape the experience of infertility.
