    The introduction of seminars to university teaching marks the onset of a new teaching philosophy and practice in which writing is used to make students independent learners and researchers. Although the beginnings of writing pedagogy at American universities are well documented, little is known about its origins in Germany. The article tracks the history of seminar teaching back to its roots and reviews its historical development from the very beginnings to the point when seminars became the pedagogical flagship of the Humboldtian research university. Twenty seminar regulations from Prussian universities, written between 1812 and 1839, are reviewed with respect to the prescriptions they contain about writing. They reveal that a writing-to-learn pedagogy was elaborated as early as about 1820. The most important claim of the article is that an early concept of writing in the disciplines was central to the development of the Humboldtian research university.

    Since the fall of the Wall, a new era of East German literature has emerged. This genre of literature exists even though East Germany’s borders dissolved over a decade and half ago and is challenging the way we think about the former German Democratic Republic. East German author Thomas Brussig is pivotal in this new genre of literature. His novels Helden wie wir (1995), Am kürzeren Ende der Sonnenallee (1999) and Leander Haußmann’s cinematic adaptation, Sonnenallee (1999), confront the negative associations and stereotypes connected with East Germany to deconstruct how formal history has portrayed its past and its citizens. Brussig’s texts take a completely different approach to remembering the GDR, which simultaneously challenges history’s dominant perspective as well as the Ostalgie phenomenon. Through his texts’ recollection, Brussig subverts the East German state in hindsight and begins the construction of a new mythology with which to associate former East Germany.

    This master thesis will consider the question how far American history influenced, and is mirrored in, (American) science fiction literature. The main work of reference for this endeavor will be the award-winning Mars Trilogy by the aforementioned, renowned science fiction author Kim Stanley Robinson. Chapter one will deal specifically with the topic of how certain events of American history – especially the War of Independence, its origins and its aftermath – are more or less mirrored in the Mars novels, often with only minor changes (and adapted into a sci-fi setting, of course). The historic concepts of ‘the Frontier’ and ‘Manifest Destiny’ will find some minor mention here. The second chapter of this paper will be exclusively about one of the early main characters of the trilogy, one with a lasting influence even though he dies early. The leading thesis will be that this ‘all-American hero’ is, more or less, a fusion of two major figures of early American history, specifically Captain John Smith and legendary ‘frontiersman’ Daniel Boone. The name of this character alone – John Boone – should serve easily as an indicator for the truth of this thesis. The final chapter of this thesis then leaves the Mars Trilogy behind in order to look at the whole wide field of science fiction literature. Selected works will serve to illustrate the pervasive presence of American history in this genre. The concept of the ‘frontier’ will be of considerable importance to this endeavor, and will feature significantly in this section. Concluding the paper will be a short overview of the paper’s major points and a few final thoughts will then round out this thesis and mark its end. ; Die vorliegende Arbeit geht der Frage nach inwieweit die amerikanische Geschichte Einfluss auf die (amerikanische) Science Fiction Literatur hat und sich auch darin wiederspiegelt.     Written during the fin de siècle, a period known as one of “sexual anarchy,” Ménie Muriel Dowie’s feminist Gallia (1895) joins the literary works of famous writers like Mona Caird or Sarah Grand. Wells. But although her novel covers the most explosive topics of the nineteenth century, namely degeneration and the female pursuit of emancipation, Dowie does not achieve great distinction as the limited se-lection of secondary literature on Gallia confirms. From my point of view, this has mostly to do with Dowie’s radical ideas on maintaining Britain’s health and su-premacy, as well as with the novel’s unconventional structure according that makes it hard to say what Dowie actually drives at. Superficially, Gallia might look like a conventional, but failed love-story with a strong and feminist heroine. But on sec-ond glance, one realises that some more important structure underlies this stereo-type-looking plot. Dowie’s creed is not that man is the measure – although the pub-licly powerful positions in this novel are all held by male characters – but that women set the new benchmarks for Britain’s society by secretly pulling the strings in order to disengage from male dominance. ; In der nachfolgenden Magisterarbeit steht primär die Darstellung der Frau im Fokus, welche die Autorin Ménie Muriel Dowie in ihrer 1895 entstandenen Novelle Gallia entwirft. Da sich eben jenes Konzept nicht mit dem Frauenbild des viktorianischen Eng-lands gleichsetzen und sich zudem in mehrere Facetten aufsplitten lässt, gliedert sich diese Arbeit in drei Hauptteile, die sich unterschiedlichen Aspekten der Darstellung widmen. Nach einer kurzen Einleitung beginne ich mit einer umfangreichen Analyse der drei männlichen Protagonisten Mark Gurdon, Robert Leighton und Hubert Essex. Diese Einschränkung basiert primär auf der Tatsache, dass diese drei direkten Kontakt zur gleichnamigen Hauptperson der Novelle haben; jedoch ist ebenfalls ausschlaggebend, dass alle drei eine dezidierte Meinung zum anderen Geschlecht zum Ausdruck bringen.
