    Many Voices in the Prose of Shulamith Hareven by Yael Balaban is the first book-size monograph dedicated to Hareven's oeuvre. It offers for the first time a deep understanding of Hareven's fiction, including her early short stories, City of Many Days, and Thirst - the Desert Trilogy. Hareven's unique voice has been missed by contemporary critics, as both her ideas and her poetics were ahead of her time: She wrote about sexual abuse long before the subject ever entered public discourse; wrote about the "second generation" of Holocaust survivors before the term was established; and created Mizrahi and Arab characters very different from the stereotypic characters in contemporary Hebrew literature. This volume offers a critical examination of recent theories concerning the growth of biblical literature in the light of the oldest textual witnesses (the Qumran biblical scrolls and the Septuagint). On the basis of a fresh examination of a selection of passages in the book of Joshua, it is shown that these witnesses do not reflect a stage in the literary formation of the book prior to the standardised (Masoretic) text, but a reinterpretation and reformulation of its contents. The study presents a new literary-critical solution to the intricate problems of Joshua 8 and a detailed exegesis of the Greek version of Joshua 1 and 5. The present volume was compiled as a respectful tribute to A.S. van der Woude and presented to him on the occasion of his 65th birthday, which coincided with his retirement as professor of Old Testament and Intertestamental Studies at the University of Groningen, a chair he held for more than thirty years. The title of this Festschrift , The Scriptures and the Scrolls , reflects the two fields of study to which he has devoted his scholarly life, not only by doing research himself, but also by stimulating many of his colleagues to collaborate in publications initiated by him. The contributions, a mélange of studies covering the wide range of Van der Woude's interests, have been arranged according to the order: Hebrew Bible (following the sequence of the books), Apocrypha, Dead Sea Scrolls, and Rabbinic Tradition.     Tannaitic literature widely discusses whether one may bequeath property in a will, overriding the biblical provisions regarding inheritance. Many subsequent scholars researched the reasons for, and the timing of, the infiltration of the will into the realm of halakha. The considerable scholarly interest in this issue is probably due to the fact that the laws of inheritance reveal society's values regarding important issues such as the meaning of private property, individual autonomy, family structure, women's status, etc. Change in the laws of inheritance may indicate transformations in these values. Moreover, the debate over the will reveals the manner in which halakha adapts itself to change. Surprisingly, however, the rule in Gittin 14b, mitzva le-kayem divrei ha-met ("it is a mitzva to fulfill the wishes [lit: to uphold the words] of the deceased") was largely ignored in the scholarly discourse regarding the laws of inheritance. This rule is a significant element in the Tannaitic debate and is implicitly evoked more than is initially apparent. The rule's intent is more radical than previously assumed — rather than being a moral duty, dividing the possessions of the deceased in accordance with his wishes is a normative obligation. In the Amoraic deliberation of this rule there is a consistent trend to restrict it's power. A new understanding of the concept of property rights was the major factor in the attempt to legitimize testamentary succession. The biblical notion of rights was familial; in the rabbinic period, however, the idea of individual property reigned, and thus it became necessary to allow one to will his property.
