Kathrin Braun introduces the concept of »injuries of normality« to capture the specifics of this type of human rights violation and the respective struggles for historic justice. She examines the processes of Vergangenheitsbewältigung in the context of coercive sterilization, institutional killings, as well as the persecution of homosexual men and of »asocials« under Nazi rule. She argues that an analytic perspective on political temporality allows us to better understand the formation of these biopolitical human rights violations and their exclusion from memory and historic justice.

    In der Abhandlung wird erstmals eine Gattungsgeschichte des deutschen Briefromans von den Anfängen im 18. Jahrhundert bis zur Gegenwart präsentiert und als eine Geschichte der Subjektivation beschrieben. Mediale, gesellschaftspolitische und kulturelle Transformationen wirkten wie Katalysatoren auf die Form und Gestalt der Briefromane ein, was insbesondere an den E-Mail- und Facebook- Romanen im 21. Jahrhundert deutlich wird. Briefe, E-Mails, Foreneinträge, Posts und ähnliches geben zugleich als »Egodokumente« Aufschluss über die Konstitution des schreibenden Ichs, dessen Probleme, Gedanken und Gefühle. Die Äußerungen eines Ichs in einem Briefroman werden als Substrat genereller Probleme und Bedürfnisse eines Subjekts zu einer bestimmten Zeit interpretiert und die Transformationen der jeweiligen Subjektkonstruktionen untersucht. Zurückgegriffen wird dabei auf Butlers Begriff der »Subjektivation « und Reckwitz’ »Theorie der Subjektkulturen«. Subjektivation wird in der Abhandlung darüber hinaus als Ziel im bildungsorientierten Deutschunterricht aufgefasst. Es wird ein Modell für einen subjektivationsorientierten Deutschunterricht entworfen, das Persönlichkeitsentwicklung und Identitätsfindung mit dem literarischen Lernen verbindet.

    Cultural China is a unique annual publication for up-to-date, informed, and accessible commentary about Chinese and Sinophone languages, cultural practices, politics and production, and their critical analysis. It builds on the University of Westminster’s Contemporary China Centre Blog, providing additional reflective introductory pieces to contextualise each of the eight chapters. The articles in this Review speak to the turbulent year that was 2020 as it unfolded across cultural China. Thematically, they range from celebrity culture, fashion and beauty, to religion and spirituality, via language politics, heritage, and music. Pieces on representations of China in Britain and the Westminster Chinese Visual Arts Project reflect our particular location and home. Many of the articles in this book focus on the People’s Republic of China, but they also draw attention to the multiple Chinese and Sinophone cultural practices that exist within, across, and beyond national borders. The Review is distinctive in its cultural studies-based approach and contributes a much-needed critical perspective from the Humanities to the study of cultural China.     Landscape and social structure of the Lower Austrian / Styrian Wechsel-region: once turnstile of the Austro-Hungarian member-states, today centre of the European Union.

    For the first time a conscious differentiation between measures in triple metre (3/4) and duple metre (2/4) both with yodels and yodel-songs, thus showing its stylistic influence. This axiom has not ben applied as a musical standard in the academic approach of traditional music so far.

The dominant commercial Internet platforms endanger democracy. They have created a communications landscape overwhelmed by surveillance, advertising, fake news, hate speech, conspiracy theories, and algorithmic politics. Commercial Internet platforms have harmed citizens, users, everyday life, and society. Democracy and digital democracy require Public Service Media. A democracy-enhancing Internet requires Public Service Media becoming Public Service Internet platforms – an Internet of the public, by the public, and for the public; an Internet that advances instead of threatens democracy and the public sphere. The Public Service Internet is based on Internet platforms operated by a variety of Public Service Media, taking the public service remit into the digital age. The Public Service Internet provides opportunities for public debate, participation, and the advancement of social cohesion. With his appointment as professor of logic and metaphysics and his marriage to Luise Adelgunde Victorie Kulmus, Gottsched was firmly established in Leipzig by the mid-1730s. Die transareal angelegte Vorlesung will versuchen, nach der (verlorenen) Einheit der Aufklärung und nach den transatlantisch verflochtenen Geschichten des 18. Jahrhunderts im Bewusstsein der Vielgestaltigkeit aufklärerischer Diskurse zwischen zwei Welten, Europa und Amerika, zu fragen. Gab es eine Aufklärung oder gab es deren viele? Mit einem deutlichen Schwerpunkt innerhalb der Romania will die Vorlesung ein Verständnis dafür wecken, auf welche Weise im „Siècle des Lumières“ inter- und transkulturelle Kontakte und Beziehungen im Bereich von Literatur, Philosophie und Kultur funktionierten und wie die literarischen Räume der Aufklärung transatlantisch in Bewegung gerieten. Neben der Verbesserung der Wohnverhältnisse und der Verkehrsbedingungen versprach man sich davon auch eine „Verschönerung“ des Stadtbildes. Die erste Untersuchung dieser Periode geht der Hypothese eines spezifischen, politisch motivierten, rigorosen Umgangs mit der Substanz und Struktur der Altstadt Wiens in diesen Jahren nach. Sie wertet verschiedene Archivquellen wie Pläne, Fotos und Schriften aus und leistet einen manuellen Abgleich diverser Stadtkarten. Das Buch zeigt den Zusammenhang von Stadtplanung und Politik auf und liefert über Wien hinaus neue Erkenntnisse zum Umgang mit historischer Bausubstanz.

ICOM versteht sich als Brückenbauer, Think Tank und Netzwerk der Museumsfachleute und Museen. 75 Jahre nach Gründung ist es Zeit für eine Rückschau: Zeitzeugen-Interviews mit den noch lebenden Präsidenten von ICOM Deutschland und dem letzten ICOM-Präsidenten der DDR geben Auskunft darüber, welchen kulturpolitischen Herausforderungen der Verband sich gegenübersah, wie und ob diese bewältigt werden konnten. Tanja Bechtel hat es übernommen, leitfadengestützt im Sinne der Oral History und der Methodik von Experten-Interviews diese Zeitzeugen-Gespräche durchzuführen und in einem Bericht für ICOM Deutschland zu dokumentieren. Materiality is the stuff of memory. Meaningful objects that we love (or hate) function not only as aide-mémoire but are integral to memory. Drawing on previous scholarship on the interrelation of memory and materiality, this book applies recent theories of new materialism to explore the material dimension of memory in art and popular culture. The book’s underlying premise is twofold: on the one hand, memory is performed, mediated, and stored through the material world that surrounds us; on the other hand, inanimate objects and things also have agency on their own, which affects practices of memory, as well as forgetting.
