    For most people, the terms "Acadiens", "Cadiens", and "Cajuns" are interchangeable words supposed to describe the same identities with regional variations depending on the Acadian or Louisiana context. The papers presented in this volume shed a new light on these identities by reinterpreting history, politics, language, literature, and popular culture in the light of current scholarly schemes. - Les termes "Acadiens", "Cadiens", and "Cajuns" sont interchangeables pour la plupart des gens et renvoient à une seule et même identité avec des variantes régionales dépendant du contexte acadien ou louisianais. Les essais rassemblés dans ce volume remettent en cause ce mythe en revendiquant une compréhension plus sophistiquée de l’histoire, de la politique, de la langue, de la littérature et de la culture populaire de ces minorités francophones en Amérique du Nord.

    "Comparing economic development in a regional context both in the South of the United States and in the European Union today raises many fascinating questions. How much money in the form of tax credits and subsidies should communities and states invest to attract foreign investors in the U.S.? Should individual states and communities in the U.S. commit public funds in the form of tax money and tax credits etc. to bring foreign businesses to their shores? Is the argument of bringing “jobs” and more employment home the only argument that should count politically? Or might these generous subsidies doled out to foreign businesses from public funds deprive local populations from improving their infrastructure and public education? What if these foreign investors then locate to other shores if their investments are not profitable enough in the short run?

    Might foreign investors come to the American South because it has never been unionized like the rest of the country? Is the attraction of the non-union South then only a means to get away from the burdens of stricter worker protection and social programs at home in Germany or Austria or elsewhere?" Der Vergleich zwischen der wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung im Süden der USA und der EU im regionalen Kontext wirft eine Vielzahl von spannenden Fragen auf. Wie viel Geld sollten Gemeinden und Länder in Form von Förderungen und Steuererleichterungen in die Hand nehmen, um ausländische Investoren in die USA zu ziehen? Sollen die einzelnen amerikanischen Staaten und Gemeinden überhaupt öffentliche Gelder einsetzen, um ausländische Unternehmungen an Land zu ziehen? Genügt das Argument vieler PolitikerInnen, dass damit neue Arbeitsplätze in der Region geschaffen werden, oder ist es nicht vielmehr so, dass diese Mittel dann in anderen Bereichen wie Infrastruktur und Bildung fehlen? Und was geschieht, wenn die Unternehmer ihre Betriebe wieder ins Ausland abziehen, weil sie nicht genug profitieren? Zieht es ausländische Investoren in den Süden der USA, weil es hier im Gegensatz zu den anderen Staaten keine gewerkschaftlichen Organisationen gibt? Und sollen damit lediglich strikter Arbeiterschutz und soziale Unterstützungen, wie sie in Österreich oder Deutschland gang und gäbe sind, umgangen werden?

    The interdisciplinary volume offers methodologically innovative approaches to Austria's coping with issues of migration past and present. These essays show Austria's long history as a migration country. Austrians themselves have been on the move for the past 150 years to find new homes and build better lives. After the World War II the economy improved and prosperity set in, so Austrians tended to stay at home. Austria's growing prosperity made the country attractive to immigrants. After the war, tens of thousands of "ethnic Germans" expelled from Eastern Europe settled in Austria. Starting in the 1950s "victims of the Cold War" (Hungary, Czechs and Slovaks) began looking for political asylum in Austria. Since the 1960s Austria has been recruiting a growing number of "guest workers" from Turkey and Yugoslavia to make up the labor missing in the industrial and service economies. Recently, refugees from the arc of crisis from Afghanistan to Syria to Somalia have braved perilous journeys to build new lives in a more peaceful and prosperous Europe. Der interdisziplinäre Band bietet methodisch neue Ansätze zum Thema Migration in Österreich. Die Aufsätze geben Einblick in Österreichs lange Geschichte als Migrationsland. Die Österreicher waren selbst über 150 Jahre lang auf der Suche nach einer neuen Heimat und einem besseren Leben. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg verbesserte sich die Wirtschaft und der Wohlstand setzte ein, sodass die Österreicher dazu neigten, im eigenen Land zu bleiben. Und Österreichs wachsender Wohlstand machte das Land für Immigranten attraktiv. Nach dem Krieg haben sich Zehntausende von „Volksdeutschen“ in Österreich niedergelassen, die aus Osteuropa vertrieben wurden. In den 1950er Jahren begannen die „Opfer des Kalten Krieges“ (Ungarn, Tschechen und Slowaken) in Österreich um politisches Asyl anzusuchen. Um die im Dienstleistungs- und Industriebereich fehlenden Arbeiter zu ersetzen, rekrutierte Österreich seit den 1960er Jahren eine wachsende Zahl von „Gastarbeitern“ aus der Türkei und Jugoslawien. In jüngster Zeit nehmen Flüchtlinge aus den Krisengebieten von Afghanistan, Syrien und Somalia gefährliche Routen, um sich ein neues Leben in einem friedlichen und wohlhabenden Europa aufzubauen.

    Der amerikanische Fotograf Yoichi Okamoto (1915–1985), der im Frühjahr 1945 als Militärfotograf nach Europa kam und in Österreich die Fotoabteilung des amerikanischen Informationsdiensts leitete, hielt in eindrucksvollen Bildern fest, wie Europa aus einem durch das nationalsozialistische Regime entfachten Weltkrieg neu ersteht. Er dokumentierte das Leben nach dem Krieg, die Hoffnung der Menschen, das Streben nach Glück, den Wiederaufbau, Kunst und Kultur und das schöpferische Österreich in einem einzigartigen fotografischen Lebenswerk, das eine ganze Generation von Fotograf*innen in Österreich und international inspirierte. 1963 wurde Okamoto von Lyndon B. Johnson zum offiziellen Präsidentschaftsfotografen im Weißen Haus ernannt.
