    The book consists of a series of discussions of the prose fiction of Robert Louis Stevenson, from his first book, New Arabian Nights, to the last short novel published in his lifetime, The Ebb-Tide. All his best-known novels are covered, as well as a selection of his lesser-known works. The focus is on the works themselves, rather than on Stevenson's admittedly fascinating life, which is touched on only so as to provide a context for his writing. It is arranged by the dates when the works were written, rather than when they were published, so as to provide an outline sketch of his career as a writer. The emphasis is on the diversity and energy of Stevenson's creativity, without seeking to overemphasize distinctions frequently applied to him in the past, such as that between his 'stories for boys' and books apparently written for adults

    By its very nature the clown, as represented in art, is an interdisciplinary phenomenon. In whichever artform it appears - fiction, drama, film, photography or fine art - it carries the symbolic association of its usage in popular culture, be it ritual festivities, street theatre or circus. The clown, like its extended family of fools, jesters, picaros and tricksters, has a variety of functions all focussed around its status and image of being "other." Frequently a marginalized figure, it provides the foil for the shortcomings of dominant discourse or the absurdities of human behaviour. Clowns, Fools and Picaros represents the latest research on the clown, bringing together for the first time studies from four continents: Europe, America, Africa and Asia. It attempts to ascertain commonalities, overlaps and differences between artistic expressions of the "clownesque" from these various continents and genres, and above all, to examine the role of the clown in our cultures today. This volume is of interest for scholars of political and comic drama, film and visual art as well as scholars of comparative literature and anthropology.

    'I like this fellow Alexander Scott - whoever he is', wrote Sydney Goodsir Smith to Maurice Lindsay soon after the Second World War. Literary Scotland certainly came to know who Alexander Scott (1920-89) was. In his day, he was one of the most prominent of Scotland's poets, renowned for witty, passionate, vigorous poems in both Scots and English - poems embodying his high ideals of poetic craftsmanship and carrying forward MacDiarmid's literary Renaissance into the Sixties. In 1971, Scott became the first head of the world's only university department in Scottish Literature. A unique personality, Alexander Scott embodied much that was vital in his country's post-war culture. This is the first major biography of a hugely influential figure in the Scottish literary scene in the 20th century.

    The book consists of a series of discussions of the prose fiction of Robert Louis Stevenson, from his first book, New Arabian Nights, to the last short novel published in his lifetime, The Ebb-Tide. All his best-known novels are covered, as well as a selection of his lesser-known works. The focus is on the works themselves, rather than on Stevenson's admittedly fascinating life, which is touched on only so as to provide a context for his writing. It is arranged by the dates when the works were written, rather than when they were published, so as to provide an outline sketch of his career as a writer. The emphasis is on the diversity and energy of Stevenson's creativity, without seeking to overemphasize distinctions frequently applied to him in the past, such as that between his 'stories for boys' and books apparently written for adults
