    Two of the top economics journals have institutional ties to a specific university, the Quarterly Journal of Economics (QJE) to Harvard University and the Journal of Political Economy (JPE) to the University of Chicago. Researchers from Harvard, but also nearby Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and from Chicago (co-)author a disproportionate share of articles in their respective home journal. Such home ties and publication bias may harm, but also benefit, article quality. We study this question in a difference-in-differences framework, using data on both current and past author affiliations and cumulative citation counts for articles published between 1995 and 2015 in the QJE, JPE, and American Economic Review (AER), which serves as a benchmark. We find that median article quality is lower in the QJE if authors have ties to Harvard and/or MIT than if authors are from other top-10 universities, but higher in the JPE if authors have ties to Chicago. We also find that home ties matter for the odds of journals to publish highly influential and low impact papers. Again, the JPE appears to benefit, if anything, from its home ties, while the QJE does not.

    Women can bear own children or adopt them. Extending economic theories of fertility, we provide a first theoretical treatment of the demand for adoption. We show that the propensity to adopt a child increases in the degree of own altruism, infertility, relatedness to the child, costs of own child birth, and any adoption-specific monetary return that is received net of the costs of adopting the child. Our model makes several testable predictions which receive empirical support. These include a higher propensity to adopt among infertile adults, relatives, women with high earnings potential, and celebrities. -- Adoption ; demand for adoption ; fertility ; children ; altruism Frauen können eigene Kinder gebären oder Kinder adoptieren. In einer Erweiterung ökonomischer Theorien der Fertilität bietet das vorliegende Papier eine erste theoretische Abhandlung über die Nachfrage nach Adoptivkindern und ihre Determinanten. Wir zeigen, dass die Neigung, ein Kind zu adoptieren, zunimmt, je altruistischer und unfruchtbarer eine Person ist, je höher die Kosten einer Geburt sind und je größer etwaige finanzielle Renditen, die sich aus einer Adoption ergeben, ausfallen. Aus unserem Modell lassen sich eine Reihe überprüfbarer Vorhersagen ableiten. Diese umfassen u.a. eine höhere Adoptionsneigung unter unfruchtbaren Personen, innerhalb von Verwandtschaftsbeziehungen, unter Frauen mit einem hohen Einkommenspotential und unter Superstars.

    In belligerent countries, male-to-female sex ratios at birth increased during and shortly after the two world wars. These rises still defy explanation. Several causes have been suggested (but not tested) in the literature. Many of these causes are proximate in nature, reflecting behavioral responses to the dramatically changed marriage market conditions for women and men that were induced by war-related declines in adult sex ratios. Based on county-level census data for the German state of Bavaria in the vicinity and aftermath of World War II, we explore the reduced-form relationship between changes in adult and off spring sex ratios. Our results suggest that war-induced shortfalls of men significantly increased the percentage of boys among newborns. -- World War II ; adult sex ratio ; sex ratio at birth
