    Religious discourse has become alien to the secular and sceptical western societies of the twentieth century. There is real discomfort when religious discourse appears either in the popular press or in society. But even in a secular society, there is still a psychological need (one might even use the stronger word will), if not to believe, then at least to hope. Dr. Filmer states this need is met in the literature of fantasy. Twentieth century fantasy has emerged from a long tradition of religion and philosophy, and it has adapted itself to provide gods and heroes whom readers might worship and in whom they might transcend themselves. Dr. Filmer does not argue that the literature of fantasy is "about" religion; rather the argument is that fantasy speaks religion, that it operates in the same space and uses the same devices as the discourse of religion, and does so largely to the same end: the articulation of hope. Dr. Filmer uses the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Peter Beagle, Susan Cooper, Madeleine L'Engle, George Orwell, Russell Hoban, James Thurber, Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., Alan Garner, Ursula LeGuin and Patricia Wrightson to illustrate her thesis. Scepticism and Hope reaffirms that, in the present sceptical age, Fantasy offers its readers a vision of the marvellous and the wonderful, and through that vision, the clear articulation of hope for humanity.

    Although C. S. Lewis (1898-1963) achieved a level of popularity as a fiction writer, literary scholars have tended to view him as a minor figure working in an insignificant genre - science fiction - or have pigeon-holed him as a Christian apologist and moralist. In C. S. Lewis in Context, Doris T. Myers places his work in the literary milieu of his times and the public context of language rather than in the private realm of personal habits or relationships. A central debate early in the twentieth century concerned the nature of language: was it primarily objective and empirical, as Charles K. Ogden and Ivor A. Richards argued in The Meaning of Meaning, or essentially metaphorical and impressionistic, the approach of Owen Barfield in Poetic Diction? Lewis espoused the latter theory and integrated it into the purpose and style of his fiction. Myers therefore argues that he was not "out of touch with his time," as some critics claim, but a twentieth-century literary figure engaged in the issues of his day. By approaching Lewis's fiction through the linguistic controversies of his day, Myers not only develops a new framework within which to evaluate his works, but also clarifies his literary contributions. This valuable study will appeal to literary and linguistic scholars as well as to general enthusiasts of Lewis's fiction.

    A collection of essays by a career C . S . Lewis scholar on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of Lewis's death. C.S. Lewis scholar Don W. King has kept a critical eye on the work by and about Lewis for four decades. Now, on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of Lewis's death, King has put together a collection of his essays and critical reviews organized around four areas. The first deals mainly with what will perhaps be Lewis's longest lasting legacy--his Chronicles of Narnia. The second deals with Lewis's poetry, a neglected area of his work. The third focuses on Lewis and the two women poets with whom he had lasting relationships: Ruth Pitter and Joy Davidman. (Lewis and Davidman eventually fell in love and later married, twice.) The fourth offers a critical perspective on the way in which critical interest in Lewis has developed over the last thirty years.
