Eva Georg liefert hierzu eine Analyse der Konstitution des (neo-)liberalen Subjekts im Kontext einer »Therapeutisierung der Gesellschaft«. Unter Bezugnahme auf Michel Foucault, die Quantenphysikerin Karen Barad und die buddhistische Philosophie nimmt sie eine Neuverhandlung der Frage nach der »Arbeit am Selbst« vor. Dabei adressiert sie ethische und feministische Debatten um die Relationalität von Subjektivität ebenso wie eine postkoloniale Perspektivierung westlicher Buddhismus-Rezeptionen - und liefert einen innovativen Beitrag für das noch junge Feld der Beratungswissenschaften, den Neuen Kritischen Materialismus sowie die Praxis von Psychotherapie, Beratung und Coaching.

Medienübergreifend werden in Werbeformen poetogene und narrative Strukturen eingesetzt. Umgekehrt ist Literatur heute ein milliardenschweres Konsumgut - und Literaturproduktion und -rezeption damit zwangsläufig von guter Werbung abhängig.Der Band versammelt literatur-, kultur- und medienwissenschaftliche Beiträge zur Funktion und Wirkmächtigkeit literarischer Sprache in Werbetexten, zu Literatur als Konsumgut sowie zu Werbung, Konsum und Überredungskunst als literarischen Topoi. Against Meritocracy is split into two parts. Part I explores the genealogies of meritocracy within social theory, political discourse and working cultures. It traces the dramatic U-turn in meritocracy’s meaning, from socialist slur to a contemporary ideal of how a society should be organised. Part II uses a series of case studies to analyse the cultural pull of popular ‘parables of progress’, from reality TV to the super-rich and celebrity CEOs, from social media controversies to the rise of the ‘mumpreneur’. Paying special attention to the role of gender, ‘race’ and class, this book provides new conceptualisations of the meaning of meritocracy in contemporary culture and society.

In this volume, these notions and conditions are connected with the concept of borders, which seems to have disappeared as a function of the global neoliberal economy but is palpably reappearing again and again through deportations, segregations, and war. How can we think about these relations in an open way, beyond borders? Is it possible to develop border thinking for a radical transformation, as a means to revolutionize the state of things?     This book presents a new history of German film from 1980-2010, a period that witnessed rapid transformations, including intensified globalization, a restructured world economy, geopolitical realignment, and technological change, all of which have affected cinema in fundamental ways. Rethinking the conventional periodization of German film history, Baer posits 1980-rather than 1989-as a crucial turning point for German cinema's embrace of a new market orientation and move away from the state-sponsored film culture that characterized both DEFA and the New German Cinema. Reading films from East, West, and post-unification Germany together, Baer argues that contemporary German cinema is characterized most strongly by its origins in and responses to advanced capitalism. Informed by a feminist approach and in dialogue with prominent theories of contemporary film, the book places a special focus on how German films make visible the neoliberal recasting of gender and national identities around the new millennium.

    Religionsfreiheit wird nicht nur in der Praxis vielfach verletzt, sondern ist auch Gegenstand politischer Auseinandersetzungen ganz grundsätzlicher Art. Für skeptische Traditionalist*innen trägt sie zur Erosion religiöser Loyalitäten bei - komplementär dazu befürchten manche Liberale, Religionsfreiheit werde zum Einfallstor für Obskurantismus und Fanatismus - und in der Perspektive postkolonialer Kritik steht sie für den Versuch, religiöse Praktiken einer globalen neoliberalen Hegemonie zu unterwerfen. Heiner Bielefeldt und Michael Wiener prüfen diese kritischen Einwände auf Grundlage ihrer langjährigen internationalen Erfahrung und plädieren für eine konsequent freiheitsrechtliche Lesart der Religionsfreiheit.

In seiner Ethnografie der Treibhausindustrie von Almería zeichnet Felix Hoffmann die Taktiken und Strategien illegalisierter Menschen nach, ihre Existenz zu stabilisieren und sich durch Arbeit in den Treibhäusern Legalität wortwörtlich zu verdienen. Er zeigt, wie hier alltagspraktische Normalisierungsprozesse postkolonialer Arbeitsteilung längst gesetzlich normiert sind. Die Studie fokussiert die prekäre Normalität der neoliberalen Produktion des »Illegalen« und lässt »Normalität« als ein Begriffsfeld, in dem das Politische immer wieder neutralisiert wird, emanzipative Bedeutung erlangen.

    This article discusses the controversy regarding Brazilian Senate Bill No. 383, which deals with the regulation of esports activity in the country. We analyzed the conversation about the hashtag #TodosContraPLS383, a repudiation movement organized on Twitter in November 2019, to engender an argument that criticizes (1) the relations between the games industry and its practices of governance and (2) how individuals assimilate neoliberal discourse within this culture. From an ethnomethodological approach and through qualitative analysis that employs ATLAS.ti to collect and make sense of the data, we reconstruct a narrative that debates anti-regulation rhetoric, exposing gamer culture's relationship with neoliberal ideology.

    In Xenocitizens, Jason Berger returns to the antebellum United States in order to challenge a scholarly tradition based on liberal–humanist perspectives. Through the concept of the xenocitizen, a synthesis of the terms "xeno," which connotes alien or stranger, and "citizen," which signals a naturalized subject of a state, Berger uncovers realities and possibilities that have been foreclosed by dominant paradigms. Innovatively re-orienting our thinking about traditional nineteenth-century figures such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau as well as formative writers such as William Wells Brown, Martin R. Delany, Margaret Fuller, and Harriet Beecher Stowe, Xenocitizens glimpses how antebellum thinkers formulated, in response to varying forms of oppression and crisis, startlingly unique ontological and social models as well as unfamiliar ways to exist and to leverage change. In doing so, Berger offers us a different nineteenth century—pushing our imaginative and critical thinking toward new terrain

    Salvage Work examines contemporary literary responses to the law’s construction of personhood in the Americas. Tracking the extraordinary afterlives of the legal slave personality from the nineteenth century into the twenty-first, Angela Naimou shows the legal slave to be a fractured but generative figure for contemporary legal personhood across categories of race, citizenship, gender, and labor. What emerges is a compelling and original study of how law invents categories of identification and how literature contends with the person as a legal fiction. Through readings of Francisco Goldman’s The Ordinary Seaman, Edwidge Danticat’s Krik?Krak!, Rosario Ferre’s Sweet Diamond Dust (Maldito Amor), Gayl Jones’s Song for Anninho and Mosquito, and John Edgar Wideman’s Fanon, Naimou shows how literary engagements with legal personhood reconfigure formal narrative conventions in Black Atlantic historiography, the immigrant novel, the anticolonial romance, the trope of the talking book, and the bildungsroman.Revealing links between colonial, civic, slave, labor, immigration, and penal law, Salvage Work reframes debates over civil and human rights by revealing the shared hemispheric histories and effects of legal personhood across seemingly disparate identities—including the human and the corporate person, the political refugee and the economic migrant, and the stateless person and the citizen.In depicting the material remains of the legal slave personality in the de-industrialized neoliberal era, these literary texts develop a salvage aesthetic that invites us to rethink our political and aesthetic imagination of personhood.     On March 11, 2004, Islamist terrorists carried out a massive bombing on Madrid's largely working-class commuter trains, leaving 191 people dead and more than 1,500 others wounded. This event, known in Spain as 11-M, was the second of three highly visible jihadist attacks on the West between 2001 and 2005, and the first in Europe, occurring just days before the national elections in Spain. Arguing that 11-M marked a critical turning point in Spanish society, this book reveals how poetry played a unique role and reflected a new political and cultural sensibility defined by informal and non-hierarchical networks of communication and memorialization. After the attacks, poems circulated in public spaces in unexpected ways, creating links and relationships that were binding: they were inscribed on banners and monuments; musicalized in anthems, protest songs, and hip-hop music; reproduced on manifestos and blogs; sent by email and text; scribbled on scraps of paper and posted on walls; performed publicly; and painted as graffiti. These forms of expression also resonated strongly with Spanish poets who had already been exploring the possibilities of ethical engagement and aesthetic creation. Poetry and Crisis explores how this essentially poetic sensibility emerged from tragedy, laying the groundwork for similar kinds of affective and grassroots mobilization that continue to grow in Europe today

    The anticipatory logic of speculation and preemptive politics of risk are increasingly gaining significance in a globalizing neoliberal world. This study traces risk and speculation as aesthetic and political-economic strategies in factual and fictional discourses emerging at the North American Pacific Rim within a decade around 2000. Its exemplary close readings in particular focus on three fictional texts (Kathryn Bigelow's Hollywood film »Strange Days«, 1995, Karen T. Yamashita's novel »Tropic of Orange«, 1997, and Larissa Lai's novel »Salt Fish Girl«, 2002) whose intricate aesthetics pass perceptive critique on concurrent political-economic discourses and their subtle reconfiguration of race, class, and gender. The speculative near-future scenarios projected by these artifacts expose the rise of risk as a new rationality of governance. At the same time they illustrate neoliberal speculation as a new paradigm of subject formation at a hyper-capitalist, millennial Pacific Rim.     Salvage Work examines contemporary literary responses to the law’s construction of personhood in the Americas. Tracking the extraordinary afterlives of the legal slave personality from the nineteenth century into the twenty-first, Angela Naimou shows the legal slave to be a fractured but generative figure for contemporary legal personhood across categories of race, citizenship, gender, and labor. What emerges is a compelling and original study of how law invents categories of identification and how literature contends with the person as a legal fiction. Through readings of Francisco Goldman’s The Ordinary Seaman, Edwidge Danticat’s Krik?Krak!, Rosario Ferre’s Sweet Diamond Dust (Maldito Amor), Gayl Jones’s Song for Anninho and Mosquito, and John Edgar Wideman’s Fanon, Naimou shows how literary engagements with legal personhood reconfigure formal narrative conventions in Black Atlantic historiography, the immigrant novel, the anticolonial romance, the trope of the talking book, and the bildungsroman.Revealing links between colonial, civic, slave, labor, immigration, and penal law, Salvage Work reframes debates over civil and human rights by revealing the shared hemispheric histories and effects of legal personhood across seemingly disparate identities—including the human and the corporate person, the political refugee and the economic migrant, and the stateless person and the citizen.In depicting the material remains of the legal slave personality in the de-industrialized neoliberal era, these literary texts develop a salvage aesthetic that invites us to rethink our political and aesthetic imagination of personhood.
