    In this volume, Kenneth Krauss maintains that if readers are to comprehend playscripts as plays, they must imagine the theatre audience - so vital to the staging of any script, but conspicuously absent from the text itself. Krauss examines what has been written about reading playscripts (or "playreading") and proposes four possible ways, founded on a reception-oriented approach to theatre communication and spectator response, that playreaders may construct a sense of theatre audiences The study begins with a review of a varied collection of books and dissertations, written over the last forty-five years, all of which explicitly discuss playreading and exhibit only minor interest in the relationship between reader and theatre audience. The study next attempts to explain why writers more sympathetic to a reader-centered view of reading, notably reader-response critics, have avoided dramatic texts almost entirely. The study finds that both theoretical and institutional limitations have kept recent so-called audience-centered critics from the crucial issues related to reading playscripts Drawing on play reading literature and on theatre reception theory, the study presents four spectator constructs which readers may deploy during the reading of playscripts. The first is what some, notably David Scanlan and Karen Laughlin, see as the "inscribed" audience (the rhetorical "house" implied by the playscript itself), which is in fact usually a projection of readers themselves. The second construct, originally proposed by Roger Gross, is the hypothetical audience which is significantly distinct from text and reader. The third and fourth, suggested by Kirsten Nigro, are the more specific actual or historical audience - which is based on hard data about real spectators - and the speculated audience, which focuses on either those who never come to see the play in question or those who actually did come but who must be imagined seeing the performance under different circumstances

    Though previously ignored as the nation's literary stepchild, the country's early drama emerges in American Drama from the Colonial Period through World War I as a dynamic cultural institution in which the social, political, economic, and artistic issues of the moment found representation for diverse, often contentious audiences. Suggesting the need to reexamine these neglected works, Gary A. Richardson argues that a more contemporary critical perspective results in a greater understanding of these plays' impact upon their original audiences, a clearer sense of the achievements of their authors, and the recovery of a long-lost segment of America's heritage. The volume moves chronologically through the nation's dramatic history, balancing observations about formal, aesthetic, and theatrical concerns with an examination of the influence of broad cultural forces upon the direction of the drama Beginning with theater and drama's emergence in the colonial period, Richardson explores drama's role in the American Revolution and, later, the nationalistic efforts of William Dunlap and James Nelson Barker to create a uniquely American drama. He continues by counterpointing the romantic configurations of William Howard Payne, Robert Montgomery Bird, and George Henry Boker with the work of writers such as James Kirke Paulding, John Augustus Stone, Joseph S. Jones, and George Aiken, who developed distinctly American character types and themes specifically designed to appeal to a popular audience. Richardson next highlights the complex cultural business of the melodramas of Dion Boucicault, Augustin Daly, David Belasco, Joaquin Miller, and Bronson Howard and the fitful emergence of a realistic drama in the plays of William Dean Howells, Steele MacKaye, James A. Herne, and William Gillette He ends by examining the turn-of-the century works of Langdon Mitchell, Clyde Fitch, William Vaughn Moody, Edward Sheldon, Rachel Crothers, and Susan Glaspell, the writers who set the stage for the appearance of such modern masters as Eugene O'Neill. A concise history of the genre, American Drama from the Colonial Period through World War I is essential reading for students and scholars interested in the dramatic foundations of American culture.     The Beggar's Opera, often referred to today as the first musical comedy, was the most popular dramatic piece of the eighteenth century - and is the work that John Gay (1685-1732) is best remembered for having written. That association of popular music and satiric lyrics has proved to be continuingly attractive and variations on the Opera have flourished in this century: by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht, by Duke Ellington, and most recently by Vaclav Havel. The original opera itself is played all over the world in amateur and professional productions But John Gay's place in all this has not been well defined. His Opera is often regarded as some sort of chance event. In John Gay and the London Theatre, the first book-length study of John Gay as dramatic author, Calhoun Winton recognizes the Opera as part of an entirely self-conscious career in the theatre, a career that Gay pursued from his earliest days as a writer in London and continued to follow to his death. Winton emphasizes Gay's knowledge of and affection for music, acquired, he argues, by way of his association with Handel. Although concentrating on Gay and his theatrical career, Winton also limns a vivid portrait of London itself and of the London stage of Gay's time, a period of considerable turbulence both within and outside the theatre. Gay's plays reflect in varying ways and degrees that social, political, and cultural turmoil. Winton's study sheds new light not only on Gay and the theatre but also on the politics and culture of his era

    The power of mass culture and the importance of public opinion seem rooted in the technology and political institutions of the twentieth century. But Paula Backscheider finds surprising evidence of their origin in seventeenth-century England. In Spectacular Politics: Theatrical Power and Mass Culture in Early Modern England, Backscheider argues that historians and literary critics have overestimated the importance of printed texts and literacy in the formation of a politically involved and opinionated public. Backscheider looks to other texts - to popular drama as well as less accessible forms such as street pageants and Christmas pantomimes - and discovers deliberate and sophisticated interactions of mass culture and public opinion. Backscheider offers three detailed examples of how popular literature participates in important social processes in which public opinion and acceptance are at stake In the first reconstruction of the London street pageants staged from 1659 to 1662, she describes how Charles II used theatrical events to reimpose the concept of a Stuart monarchy - and how his opponents responded with rival entertainments advocating a different idea of the monarchy and the future. She then examines the London theatrical season of 1695-96, when one third of the new plays performed were written by women. Here Backscheider shows how transgressive, revisionary literature can awaken censoring and collaborative forces even as it opens debate In her final section, Backscheider presents the first critical reconstruction and serious analysis of gothic drama, an early and indisputable example of "mass culture." She demonstrates how these popular entertainments expressed the public's deepest anxieties, while offering a redeeming image of humankind and the nation, as England faced the Regency Crisis of 1788-89 - when George III was judged "hopelessly mad." Backscheider illustrates the various ways in which literature participates in the ideological struggle for intellectual, moral, and philosophical dominance in a society. Each case also shows the significance of how a people imagines itself and its "story" - and what happens when established notions of identiry are challenged or threatened. At such moments of crisis, Backscheider concludes, radically original and culturally powerful texts come into being, new genres are created, and literary works become mass culture

    Theater at the Margins: Text and the Poststructured Stage investigates recent German and American texts in relation to contemporary critical theory. Focusing on the work of writers Kathy Acker, Frank Chin, Caryl Churchill, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Richard Foreman, Elaine Jackson, Cherrie Moraga, and Wallace Shawn, the book explains how these nontraditionalists challenge the presumptions of traditional dramatic writing and contribute to a unique theatrical sensibility. The introduction to Theater at the Margins situates contemporary post-structuralist, ethnic, and feminist theory in relation to theater and the dramatic text, with specific reference to Derrida's concept of "the margin." Subsequent chapters apply this thinking to specific texts, including Pandering to the Masses; Garbage, The City and Death; The Chickencoop Chinaman; and Giving Up the Ghost. A concluding chapter summarizes these readings and suggests how they might be useful for theater practitioners. The theoretical issues covered are central to both contemporary critical discourse and theatrical practice. By investigating the notion of "margins," of the places in which the dramatic text begins to unravel its ontotheological heritage, MacDonald shows how the possibility for staging philosophy's "Other" emerges. He makes clear, however, that staging this Other is not simply a concern of philosophy; instead, he raises the possibility of a heterogeneous theater that would accentuate the historical and political background of a particular group while at the same time making room for competing voices. Theater at the Margins argues that this heterogeneity of texts could create a theater that would be responsive and responsible to a world no longer defined by a particular center.
