    An authoritative account of the life and achievements of George Morley, who was for years a teacher at Christ Church, Oxford, before becoming Dean of the College, and then ultimately the Bishop of Worcester and then Winchester. He was as such an important C17th figure, even beyond the University of Oxford and Dioceses of Worcester and Winchester, and fundamentally entwined nationally in the heightened political and religious controversies of his time. He was involved in the restoration of the monarch in 1660, as well as in the consequent deliberations regarding a settlement with a view to establishing church unity in the subsequent decades. He was also a man who straddled cultures and political epochs, born at the end of the C16th and living through much of the C17th, thus a life that began in the era of the Gunpowder plot and which ended in the run-up to the so-called Glorious Revolution. This meant that Morley’s personal and professional evolution touches on moments of extraordinary tumult and contention, requiring him to develop profound skills of negotiation, compromise, and bridge-building. As such he become a skilled mediator, a diplomat at a time when this was most in demand.

    Premodern Ecologies in the Modern Literary Imagination explores how the cognitive and physical landscapes in which scholars conduct research, write, and teach have shaped their understandings of medieval and Renaissance English literary "oecologies." The collection strives to practice what Ursula K. Heise calls "eco-cosmopolitanism," a method that imagines forms of local environmentalism as a defense against the interventions of open-market global networks. It also expands the idea’s possibilities and identifies its limitations through critical studies of premodern texts, artefacts, and environmental history. The essays connect real environments and their imaginative (re)creations and affirm the urgency of reorienting humanity’s responsiveness to, and responsibility for, the historical links between human and non-human existence. The discussion of ways in which meditation on scholarly place and time can deepen ecocritical work offers an innovative and engaging approach that will appeal to both ecocritics generally and to medieval and early modern scholars

Major dramatists on both sides addressed the divisive issues: Lope de Vega, Tirso de Molina, and Calderon de la Barca in Spain; Shakespeare, Marlowe, Chapman, Massinger, and Middleton in England. In this comprehensive work, a distinguished authority on drama examines history plays, masques, and spectacles, with close attention to the changing development of the two national dramas, he directs us to the study of their suprrising similarities.The author's lucid exposition makes possible an assessment of the commentary on historical events provided by the dramatists.     James Biester sees the shift in late Elizabethan England toward a witty, rough, and obscure lyric style-metaphysical wit and strong lines-as a response to the heightened cultural prestige of wonder. That same prestige was demonstrated in the search for strange artifacts and animals to display in the wonder-cabinets of the period.By embracing the genres of satire and epigram, poets of the Elizabethan court risked their chances for political advancement, exposing themselves to the danger of being classified either as malcontents or as jesters who lacked the gravitas required of those in power. John Donne himself recognized both the risks and benefits of adopting the'admirable'style, as Biester shows in his close readings of the First and Fourth Satyres.Why did courtier-poets adopt such a dangerous form of self-representation? The answer, Biester maintains, lies in an extraordinary confluence of developments in both poetics and the interpenetrating spheres of the culture at large, which made the pursuit of wonder through style unusually attractive, even necessary. In a postfeudal but still aristocratic culture, he says, the ability to astound through language performed the validating function that was once supplied by the ability to fight. Combining the insights of the new historicism with traditional literary scholarship, Biester perceives the rise of metaphysical style as a social as well as aesthetic event

    John Shearman makes the plea for a more engaged reading of art works of the Italian Renaissance, one that will recognize the presuppositions of Renaissance artists about their viewers. His book is the first attempt to construct a history of those Renaissance paintings and sculptures that are by design completed outside themselves in or by the spectator, that embrace the spectator into their narrative plot or aesthetic functioning, and that reposition the spectator imaginatively or in time and space. He takes the lead from texts and artists of the period, for these artists reveal themselves as spectators. Among modern historiographical techniques, Reception Theory is closest to the author's method, but Shearman's concern is mostly with anterior relationships with the viewer--that is, relationships conceived and constructed as part of the work's design, making, and positioning.Shearman proposes unconventional ways in which works of art may be distinguished one from another, and in which spectators may be distinguished, too, and enlarges the accepted field of artistic invention. Furthermore, His argument reflects on the Renaissance itself. What is created in this period tends to be regarded as conventional, or inherent in the nature of painting and sculpture: he maintains that this is a careless, disengaged view that has overlooked the process of discovery by immensely inventive and visually intelllectual artists.John Shearman is William Door Boardman Professor of Fine Arts at Harvard University.     Jennifer C. Vaught illustrates how architectural rhetoric in Shakespeare and Spenser provides a bridge between the human body and mind and the nonhuman world of stone and timber. The recurring figure of the body as a besieged castle in Shakespeare’s drama and Spenser’s allegory reveals that their works are mutually based on medieval architectural allegories exemplified by the morality play The Castle of Perseverance. Intertextual and analogous connections between the generically hybrid works of Shakespeare and Spenser demonstrate how they conceived of individuals not in isolation from the physical environment but in profound relation to it. This book approaches the interlacing of identity and place in terms of ecocriticism, posthumanism, cognitive theory, and Cicero’s art of memory. Architectural Rhetoric in Shakespeare and Spenser examines figures of the permeable body as a fortified, yet vulnerable structure in Shakespeare’s comedies, histories, tragedies, romances, and Sonnets and in Spenser’s Faerie Queene and Complaints

Dabei richtet sich das Erkenntnisinteresse auf eine erzählimmanente Anthropologie, deren Konturen zum Teil über den literarischen Vergleich verdeutlicht werden. Da die Renaissance einen Umbruch kultureller Gewissheiten mit sich bringt, erweist sich die narrative Suche nach dem, was den Menschen angesichts seines Denkens und Tuns essentiell ausmachen soll, als zentral. Eine Epoche, die für die Neuorientierung des reflexiven und sinnlichen Zugangs zur Welt steht, kann indes nur bedingt bereits gefestigte Anschauungen neugefasster humaner Identität bereitstellen. Das Erproben unterschiedlicher Ansätze dominiert. Für ein solches Vorgehen ist das Genre der Novelle als ein damals noch relativ offenes sehr geeignet. Boccaccio, Bandello und Marguerite de Navarre bilden den Kern der Betrachtungen.

    Virgil's fourth Eclogue is one of the most quoted, adapted and discussed works of classical literature. This study traces the fortunes of Eclogue 4 in the literature and art of the Italian Renaissance. It sheds new light on some of the most canonical works of Western art and literature, as well as introducing a large number of other, lesser-known items, some of which have not appeared in print since their original publication, while others are extant only in manuscript. Individual chapters are devoted to the uses made of the fourth Eclogue in the political panegyric of Medici Florence, the Venetian Republic and the Renaissance papacy, and to religious appropriations of the Virgilian text in the genres of epic and pastoral poetry. The book also investigates the appearance of quotations from the poem in fifteenth- and sixteenth-century fresco cycles representing the prophetic Sibyls in Italian churches.

Weiter ausgreifende Passagen zu den sozial- und ideengeschichtlichen Voraussetzungen wechseln sich mit exemplarischen Einzelinterpretationen ab. Neben dem europäischen Kontext der deutschen Literaturgeschichte, die hier erstmals in ihrer longue durée (1450-1750) und im Verhältnis zu ihren Nachbarliteraturen konturiert wird, wird der Wandel der Autorschaftskonzepte systematisch erläutert. Dem illustrierten Darstellungsteil folgt ein Anhang mit repräsentativen Texten der Frühen Neuzeit.     In der aktuellen Berichterstattung werden vor allem die Unterschiede zwischen dem christlichen Westen und dem islamischen Osten betont. Bei einem näheren Blick auf die Geschichte der beiden Kulturräume lässt sich jedoch eine ähnliche Entwicklung ausmachen: Als Renaissance wird sowohl eine Phase im Heiligen Römischen Reich unter den Habsburgern als auch im Herrschaftsgebiet der Timuriden bezeichnet. Diese vermeintliche Ähnlichkeit bildet den Ausgangspunkt für eine Untersuchung der beiden Kulturräume in der Zeit um 900/1500. Damals lenkten die Herrscher Maximilian I. und Babur die Geschicke der beiden Dynastien. Ihre Selbstzeugnisse bilden die Grundlage für eine vergleichende Analyse. Die Fragen, die im Rahmen der Arbeit behandelt werden, lauten: Welche signifikanten Ähnlichkeiten zwischen diesen Texten lassen sich ausmachen und woher rühren sie? Lassen sich Unterschiede feststellen, die Hinweise auf eine Auseinanderentwicklung der beiden Kulturräume geben? Die Analyse lässt zahlreiche Gemeinsamkeiten zutage treten. Es zeigt sich, dass der typologische Vergleich literarischer Texte dazu beitragen kann, aktuelle Entwicklungen, in denen die trennenden Elemente zwischen Westen und Osten stark betont werden, historisch präziser einzuordnen. Doch auch der herausgearbeitete Unterschied kann aufschlussreich sein: Er lässt sich als Vorzeichen auf die Auseinanderentwicklung beider Kulturräume im Bereich der Ambiguitätstoleranz deuten. Der Autorin wurde der Nachwuchspreis des Mediävistenverbandes verliehen. The current media coverage emphasizes the differences between “Christian West” and “Islamic East”. However, a similarity in development can be found by having a closer look at the history of the Islamic world. For example, a period during the rule of the Timurid dynasty is also known as ‘Renaissance’. It took place at the same time as the ‘Renaissance’ under the rule of the Habsburgs in the Holy Roman Empire. This apparent similarity is used as a starting point for an analysis of the situation of the two cultural regions around 900/1500. The powerful dominions of the Habsburgs and the Timurids were ruled by the emperors Maximilian the First and Babur during that time. They both wrote self-testimonies which have been used for a comparative analysis. The thesis seeks to provide answers to the following questions: Which kind of important similarities can be found in the texts, and where do they originate? Can significant differences be identified which may reveal the starting point of the diverging development of the cultures? The results of the analysis indicate many similarities in the self-presentations. They show that a typological comparison of literary texts can lead to a more precise and historically correct interpretation than that of current trends, which rather promote differences between the cultures of West and East. Even the detected difference can be insightful: it is seen as an early sign of divergence of the two cultures in the area of intolerance of ambiguities.
