    "The sense of estrangement felt by men during the nineteenth century has been called many things - a crisis in masculinity, the mal de siècle, even a psychological disorder known as neurasthenia - but as a phenomenon, such masculine discontent has gone largely unexplored outside of the western European and American contexts. In this ground-breaking new investigation, Allison Leigh explores how Russian painters sought to depict the new psychological struggles associated with modernity and the implications such visual manifestations of anxiety had for masculinity at the time. Drawing on a wide variety of source material, including previously untranslated letters, journals, and contemporary criticism, Leigh investigates how men's lives changed as they experienced the cultural upheavals of the nineteenth century. In so doing, she introduces readers to Russian artists such as Pavel Fedotov, Karl Briullov, Il'ia Repin, and Ivan Kramskoi, all of whom produced masterpieces of realist art in dialogue with paintings made in European artistic centers at the time. The result is a more culturally discursive account of art-making in the nineteenth century, one that challenges some of the enduring myths of masculinity and provides a fresh interpretive history of what constitutes modernism in the history of art"

    Challenging clichés of Japanism as a feminine taste, Bachelor Japanists argues that Japanese aesthetics were central to contests over the meanings of masculinity in the West. Christopher Reed draws attention to the queerness of Japanist communities of writers, collectors, curators, and artists in the tumultuous century between the 1860s and the 1960s.Reed combines extensive archival research; analysis of art, architecture, and literature; the insights of queer theory; and an appreciation of irony to explore the East-West encounter through three revealing artistic milieus: the Goncourt brothers and other japonistes of late-nineteenth-century Paris; collectors and curators in turn-of-the-century Boston; and the mid-twentieth-century circles of artists associated with Seattle's Mark Tobey. The result is a groundbreaking integration of well-known and forgotten episodes and personalities that illuminates how Japanese aesthetics were used to challenge Western gender conventions. These disruptive effects are sustained in Reed's analysis, which undermines conventional scholarly investments in the heroism of avant-garde accomplishment and ideals of cultural authenticity

    Arriving in New York City in the first decade of the twentieth century, six painters - Robert Henri, John Sloan, Everett Shinn, Glackens, George Luks, and George Bellows, subsequently known as the Ashcan Circle -f aced a visual culture that depicted the urban man as a diseased body under assault. Ashcan artists countered this narrative, manipulating the bodies of construction workers, tramps, entertainers, and office workers to stand in visual opposition to popular, political, and commercial cultures. They did so by repeatedly positioning white male bodies as having no cleverness, no moral authority, no style, and no particular charisma, crafting with consistency an unspectacular man. This was an attempt, both radical and deeply insidious, to make the white male body stand outside visual systems of knowledge, to resist the disciplining powers of commercial capitalism, and to simply be with no justification or rationale. Ashcan artists reconfigured urban masculinity for national audiences and reimagined the possibility and privilege of the unremarkable white, male body thus shaping dialogues about modernity, gender, and race that shifted visual culture in the United States

    "Aesthetic Modernism and Masculinity in Fascist Italy is an interdisciplinary historical re-reading of a series of representative texts that complicate our current understanding of the portrayal of masculinity in the Italian fascist era. Examining paintings, films, music and literature in light of some of the ideological and material contradictions that animated the regime, it argues that fascist masculinity was itself highly contradictory. It brings to the fore works that have tended to be under-studied, and argues that, while fascist inclusive strategies of patronage worked to bind artists to the regime, an official policy of non-interference may inadvertently have opened up a space whereby the arts expressed a more complicated and contestatory view of masculinity than the one proffered by kitsch photos of a bare-chested Mussolini skiing. Champagne seeks to evaluate how the aesthetic analysis of the artifacts explored offer a more sophisticated and nuanced understanding of what world politics is, what is at stake when something like 'masculinity' is rendered as being an element of world politics, and how such an understanding differs from more orthodox 'cultural' analyses common to international relations.Providing a significant contribution to understandings of representations of masculinities in modernist art, this work will be of great interest to students and scholars of gender studies, queer studies, political science, Italian studies and art history. Through a shared violence of human dissection, pugilism, and war, men in artistic and medical professions secured their masculine status and professional authority. This volume scrutinizes the relationships between the heteronormative, the homosocial, and the homoerotic in art and depictions of anatomy. Close analysis of works by Cezanne, Courbet, Degas, Delacroix, Gericault, Millet, Pissarro, and others offers fresh insight, reinforced by parallels illustrated in literary descriptions of bodies in Frankenstein, Jekyll and Hyde, and Sherlock Holmes. Anthea Callen examines how ideas of healthy male "normality" and a modern virile masculinity were constructed and negotiated through these artistic and literary representations; she also measures these virile body images against actual, classed, or racialized male bodies, delivering lively scholarship that spans art history, history of science, literature, and anthropology, as well as studies of masculinity and sexuality
