    Abstract. Using the methods of Geographic Information Science and Technology (GIS&T) to analyze historical data has been of increasing interest to the scientific community of History in the last two decades. The spatial turn in the Humanities fueled this development and lead to a number of scientific initiatives that utilized GIS&T to store, analyze and visualize historical data accordingly. This article, documenting ongoing work, outlines the scientific developments, main research foci, and past and current research interests of the emerging field of historical GIS from the beginning of the spatial turn in the social sciences to the present day. The article is using a literature review in the fields of Geographic Information Science and History as core methodology. Our main findings are centered around the fact that historical GIS research is spread out over a variety of disciplines and journals. Hence, building a methodological and theoretical core, and forming cohesion in the field has been challenging. Current research trends underpin this trend. Nevertheless, a number of promising research initiatives are pursued at the intersection of GIS&T and History – which documents an intensification of the collaboration between both fields.

    Cultural Landscape Characteristics and Heritage Values A Spatially Explicit Hedonic Approach This paper uses the hedonic approach to analyze the relation between cultural landscape characteristics and property values. The empirical model uses geographic information systems to create a model that adds spatially explicit variables of landscape structure to the classic hedonic variables. Nearly 5000 house transactions in south Sweden were studied to estimate the effects of cultural landscape attributes on transaction prices. The key empirical results show that cultural heritage sites generate a premium of 3-4% for properties located in the vicinity. The results also show that the percentage of land within communities devoted to local and national preservation areas leads to a considerable increase in house prices (up to 12%) comparing to communities that have less land devoted to preservation areas.

    The three-decade war in Sri Lanka left parts of the northern and eastern regions severely destroyed. Those regions are populated by minority and marginalized ethnic groups. The expectation is that aid flows to those regions to rebuild after the war as they need the aid more than other places. Nonetheless, the regions are underdeveloped, and the underlying issues which caused the war are yet to be addressed. Hence, this paper aims to answer the research question, 'Are conflict-affected districts a priority in aid allocation in postwar Sri Lanka?' This paper is primarily concerned about the aid allocation post-conflict. However, since the tsunami hit Sri Lanka in 2004, we use the aid allocation from the post-disaster environment to reveal aid patterns and potential biases. The paper uses GIS geocoding, mapping, spatial analysis, and econometric analysis to understand whether: (i) tsunami-affected districts received more aid than others, (ii) war-affected districts received more aid than others, (iii) economically developed districts receive less aid than others. The paper uses AidData on World Bank, Chinese, and the author's collected data on Asian Development Bank aid projects, 2002-2015. The study finds that donors do not respond to the needs of the recipient country. The maps and the analysis show that aid projects are predominantly in southern regions of the country and not in the war-affected districts.

    This paper examines the consequences of the commuter transport revolution on working class labour markets in 1930s London. The ability to commute alleviated urban crowding and increased workers’ choice of potential employers. Using GIS-based data constructed from the New Survey of London Life and Labour, we examine the extent of commuting and estimate the earnings returns to commuting. We obtain a lower-bound estimate of two percent increase in earnings per kilometer travelled. We also show that commuting was an important contributor to improving quality of life in the early-twentieth century.

    As more consumers take advantage of online banking services, branch networks are declining across the country. Limited attention has been given to identifying any possible spatial patterns of branch closures and, more importantly, the community demographics where branches close their doors. This analysis uses an innovative spatial statistics concept to study financial services: Using data from 2010 to 2016, a random labelling test is conducted to understand branch closure clustering in the Philadelphia, Chicago, and Baltimore metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs). Additionally, spatial autocorrelation is tested, and an MSA-level spatial regression analysis is done to see if there is a pattern to branch closures in metropolitan areas. I find evidence of branch closure clusters in the Chicago and Philadelphia MSAs; however, this spatial pattern is only observable within the suburbs, not the primary city itself. Using a random labelling test is a methodological innovation in regional economic studies and propels our understanding of banking deserts and underserved neighborhoods
