    This research report synthesises recent evidence, in the form of a literature review and case studies, on the use of public engagement for technological innovation. Commissioned by the Better Regulation Executive (BRE), this work will enable BRE to provide support, advise and share best practice with policymakers and regulators on public engagement techniques to support appropriate regulation of technological innovation. Specifically, the report describes the evidence including: existing examples of public engagement techniques and ten case studies to illustrate how public engagement has been applied around technological innovation; the impact of the public engagement techniques on, for example, the design of regulatory frameworks, business models, technology adoption and public trust; formal evaluation of the effectiveness of the public engagement techniques around technological innovation.

    How does armed conflict affect social cohesion, that is, the social fabric of societies? This question is central if we want to understand better why some countries experience repeated cycles of violence. It is also a crucial question for the design of peacebuilding interventions. In recent years, considerable scientific work has been put into studying the social legacies of armed conflict. This literature review brings these academic studies together in a novel way. In this discussion paper we conduct an extensive review of the empirical academic literature on how armed conflict affects social cohesion. We take a holistic perspective and analyse each of the three constituent elements of social cohesion - trust, cooperation and identity - in detail and along both a vertical (state-society relations) and a horizontal (interpersonal and intergroup relations) dimension. Regarding conflict, the focus lies on intrastate conflict and civil war, but the review also includes the few studies that focus on armed conflict between states or groups (interstate and non-state conflict). Overall, this review brings together insights from 39 published, peer-reviewed, empirical studies, most of which analyse the effects of conflict based on comprehensive survey data or behavioural experiments. Strengths and shortcomings are discussed and future avenues for research are identified. Contrary to the initial optimism of the potentially positive legacies of armed conflict expressed by some scholars, our main finding holds that the literature by now mainly points towards such conflict harming social cohesion. Most clearly, there is quite a large body of literature showing that social trust is negatively affected by experience of violence. Research on political trust and social identities is still nascent but currently also points towards negative effects. The literature on cooperation is more mixed with studies finding both support for an increase or a decrease in cooperative behaviour. However, several (and particularly newer) studies demonstrate that an increase in cooperation can often be explained by prosocial behaviour towards the in-group but not the out-group, calling into question whether this should be interpreted positively for social cohesion overall. Political participation does, however, seem to be one aspect of social cohesion in which effects of the "post-traumatic growth" mechanism can indeed be traced in several contexts.

    A subjective well-being angle has emerged as an important new frontier to advance the understanding of the causes and consequences of migration. The purpose of this chapter is to organize and take stock of this emerging literature on the bi-directional relationship between migration and happiness by reviewing the available literature from a global perspective. The literature review covers both international migration and internal migration and considers the outcomes of various stakeholders (migrants, hosting communities, and family members left behind).The literature documents ample evidence that happiness plays an important role in migration decisions, with relatively unhappy people moving to happier places, even after accounting for standard predictors of migration. In some contexts, internal migrants experience a pre-migration happiness dip. Most international migrants gain happiness from migration, hosting populations tend to experience a mixed but small impact, and family members staying behind generally experience a positive impact on evaluative well-being but not emotional well-being. However, the outcomes are strongly context-dependent and important differences exist between individuals. The impact of migration is much smaller for internal migrants. Overall, the current evidence suggests that migration contributes to a happier world because of the generally positive effects on migrants and the marginal effects on hosting communities.

    Der vorliegende Arbeitsbericht soll den aktuellen Stand der Forschung zum Thema Fairness bei der Performancebewertung in Supply Chains abbilden. Im Mittelpunkt stehen die Fragen, wodurch eine faire Performancebewertung in Supply Chains gekennzeichnet ist und warum die Fairness in diesem Zusammenhang von Bedeutung ist. Durch Berücksichtigung des Fairnessaspekts wird die Supply-Chain-Management-Forschung, die sich traditionell auf die Rationalitätsannahme stützt, um verhaltensökonomische Erkenntnisse bereichert. Im Rahmen der systematischen Literaturrecherche wurde ein nahezu weißer Fleck auf der derzeitigen Forschungslandkarte festgestellt. Um übertragbare Theorien und empirische Erkenntnisse zu identifizieren, wurde der Betrachtungshorizont bei der Recherche anschließend ausgeweitet. Die Methodik und Ergebnisse der mehrstufigen systematischen Literaturrecherche werden im Arbeitsbericht ausführlich dargelegt. Im Zuge der inhaltlichen Literaturanalyse werden diverse Einflussfaktoren auf die individuelle Fairnesswahrnehmung bei Performancebewertungen zusammengetragen. Final werden Wege für die zukünftige Forschung aufgezeigt.

    Rent control is a highly debated social policy that has been omnipresent since World War I. Since 2010s, it has been experiencing a true renaissance, for many cities and countries facing housing shortage are desperately looking for solutions of the chronic housing shortage and direct their attention to controlling housing rents and to other restrictive policies. Is rent control useful or does it create more damage than utility? In order to answer this question, we need to know what are the effects of rent control. This study overviews a large empirical literature looking at various aspects of rent controls. We come to conclusion that rent controls are quite effective in terms of lowering housing rents or slowing down their growth, but they also lead to a wide range of adverse effects impacting both landlords and tenants.

    This study updates the annual comparative analysis of the performance and structures of the German science system. We use several bibliometric indicators of productivity, impact, and international collaboration to assess Germany's performance for the period 1995-2019 compared against 22 countries and the EU13, EU14, EU27, and OECD country groups, and an intra-Germany assessment of six sectors of the science system. Overall, all countries increased their scientific productivity over time, with particularly strong growth in China and India. China now produces nearly 25 percent of global publications and the USA, Germany, and other leading countries have accordingly lost shares. Germany continued to publish in highly visible journals and attract above-average citations. Notably, China increased both its visibility and impact to above-average levels for the first time in 2017. International collaboration continued to increase, and Germany now collaborates on 60 percent of publications, up from 50 percent a decade ago, a level in line with other large European countries, and remains a sought-after collaboration partner alongside the USA.
