Jack Wheatcroft (1925-2016) had a transformative impact on five decades of Bucknell students (1952-1996). He served the institution with great generosity of a kind that was rare for a teacher so immersed in his writing. He founded the Bucknell Seminar for Undergraduate Poets, the Philip Roth Visiting Writers Residency, and the magnificent Stadler Center for Poetry. He over saw the restoration of Bucknell Hall for the Stadler Center and today it is one of the most beautiful and distinguished buildings and centers on campus. He was largely responsible for the creation of Bucknell University Press. Jack Wheatcroft's life and the evolution of Bucknell University in the twentieth century are inextricable. He was formative in helping to create and nurture a community of artists and intellectuals that helped to propel Bucknell into national prominence. Over fifty years, Jack Wheatcroft published twenty-six books of poetry, fiction, and plays. The essays in this festschrift, by former students (who have gone on to be writers and teachers themselves), colleagues, and friends are a testimony to an extraordinary teacher, writer, innovator, and trailblazer in creating a community and infrastructure of literary culture at a distinguished liberal arts college

A hand-signed porcelain urinal. An abstract drip painting. A silent 700 hour performance. Art has changed since the days of Giotto, Michelangelo, and even Picasso--and many of us are perplexed. Do modern and contemporary artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Jackson Pollock, and Marina Abramovic represent civilization's highest achievements? Or is something else afoot? In The Art of Looking, art critic Lance Esplund demonstrates that works of modern and contemporary art are not as indecipherable as they seem to be. He reveals the threads that weave the art of the past with that of the present, and shows us how to separate the genuine article from mere rags--not to mention the emperor's new clothes "The landscape of contemporary art has changed dramatically during the last hundred years: from Malevich's 1915 painting of a single black square and Duchamp's 1917 signed porcelain urinal to Jackson Pollock's midcentury "drip" paintings; Chris Burden's "Shoot" (1971), in which the artist was voluntarily shot in the arm with a rifle; Urs Fischer's "You" (2007), a giant hole dug in the floor of a New York gallery; and the conceptual and performance art of today's Ai Weiwei and Marina Abramovic. The shifts have left the art-viewing public (understandably) perplexed. In The Art of Looking, renowned art critic Lance Esplund demonstrates that works of modern and contemporary art are not as indecipherable as they might seem. With patience, insight, and wit, Esplund guides us through the last century of art and empowers us to approach and appreciate it with new eyes. Eager to democratize genres that can feel inaccessible, Esplund encourages viewers to trust their own taste, guts, and common sense. The Art of Looking will open the eyes of viewers who think that recent art is obtuse, nonsensical, and irrelevant, as well as the eyes of those who believe that the art of the past has nothing to say to our present." -- Publisher's description

What can translations reveal about the global reception of any authorship? In Jane Austen Speaks Norwegian: The Challenges of Literary Translation , Marie Nedregotten Sørbø compares two novels and six translations of them. The discussion is entirely in English, as all Norwegian versions are back-translated. This study therefore lends itself to comparisons with other languages, and aims to fill its place as one component in a worldwide field of research; how Jane Austen is understood and transmitted. Moreover, this book presents a selection of pertinent issues for any translator, including abbreviation and elaboration, style and vocabulary, and censorship. Sørbø gives vivid examples of how literary translation happens, and how it serves to interpret and refashion literature for new readerships

"Antigone Undone offers an urgent and mesmerizing account of the creative and destructive power of great art. In 2015 Will Aitken journeyed to Luxembourg for the rehearsals and premiere of Anne Carson's translation of Sophokles' 5th-century BCE tragedy Antigone, starring Juliette Binoche and directed by theatrical sensation Ivo van Hove. In repeatedly watching the play, he became awestruck with the plight of the young woman at the centre of the action. "Look at what these men are doing to me," Antigone cries, expressing the predicament of the dispossessed throughout time. Transfixed by the strange and uncanny power of the play, he finds himself haunted by its protagonist, finally resulting in his own suicidal breakdown. With a backstage view of the action, Aitken illuminates the creative process of Carson, Binoche, and Van Hove and offers a rare glimpse into collaborative genius in action. He also investigates the response to the play by Kierkegaard, Virginia Woolf, Judith Butler, and others who, like him, were moved by its timeless protest against injustice."-- Preface -- part I. Three days in Thebes -- part II. Handful of dirt -- part III. Thinking Antigone -- coda. Antigone in Autumn.

"In this collaborative monograph, five scholars from Britain, Australia and New Zealand reflect on the modes of commemoration of Shakespeare in and after the Tercentenary year, 1916, in two hemispheres. They argue that it was at this moment of remembering that 'global Shakespeare' first emerged in recognizable, if embryonic form. Despite a recent surge of interest in the Shakespeare Tercentenary, a great deal has been forgotten about this key moment in the history of the place of Shakespeare in national and global culture - much more than has been remembered. In addressing this the book offers new materials and discoveries about, and new interpretations of, the Tercentenary celebrations in Britain and in Australia and New Zealand, and reflects also on the long legacy of those celebrations"-- Introduction -- Chapter 1:'Goblin's market: Israel Gollancz, the 1916 Tercentenary, and the invention of "global Shakespeare"' reflections I -- Chapter 2: 'The Shakespeare Hut: Anzac meets Shakespeare in London, 1916' reflections II -- Chapter 3:'Oblivion and Memory: New Zealand Inside the Shakespeare Hut (and Beyond), 1916' reflections III -- Chapter 4: 'The Afterlife of a Memorial' reflections IV -- Chapter 5: '"Remembering with Advantages": Henry V and the play of commemorative rhetoric in Australia' -- After Word: 'Memory, Architecture, Space' -- Notes -- Bibliography -- Index.

C.S. Lewis, ulster contrarian -- Lewis among his peers -- Lewis's popular reception in mid-century Britain and America -- Lewis and the mechanisms of mass culture -- Whose Lewis? This book considers the history of British literary scholar, author and Christian apologist C.S. Lewis's fame from the 1940s through the present and compares his contrasting patterns of reception in Britain and America. Lewis was both an esteemed literary figure and a divisive personality among his colleagues at Oxford and Cambridge Universities, who recognized his penchant for projecting a persona. It took the outbreak of the Second World War and invitations from Christian leaders to draw Lewis into crafting popular Christian apologetics. Yet Lewis's reasons for writing books that were accessible to a broad audience, including his children's books, were rooted in a literary theory informed by his early reading life in Edwardian Belfast and his objections to literary modernism. The reception of Lewis's popular works in America was shaped by the fact that American readers did not appreciate Lewis's literary and cultural context. His posthumous fame, furthermore, should be accredited in part to factors independent of the qualities of his work: e.g. the publishing history of his books, the rise of visual media, the history of evangelicalism, and the manipulation of his legacy by the C.S. Lewis Estate. The evolution of rival portraits of Lewis as a Christian apologist and a children's author is equally part of this story. Lewis's platform as a contrarian Christian resisting modernity and his reactions to the intellectual, social, and religious changes of his day made the critical difference to his disparate transatlantic receptions

"Henrik Ibsen's drama is the most prominent and lasting contribution of the cultural surge seen in Scandinavian literature in the later nineteenth century. When he made his debut in Norway in 1850, the nation's literary presence was negligible, yet by 1890 Ibsen had become one of Europe's most famous authors. Contrary to the standard narrative of his move from restrictive provincial origins to liberating European exile, Narve Fulsås and Tore Rem show how Ibsen's trajectory was preconditioned on his continued embeddedness in Scandinavian society and culture, and that he experienced great success in his home markets. This volume traces how Ibsen's works first travelled outside Scandinavia and studies the mechanisms of his appropriation in Germany, Britain and France. Engaging with theories of book dissemination and world literature, and re-assessing the emergence of 'peripheral' literary nations, this book provides new perspectives on the work of this major figure of European literature and theatre"-- Machine generated contents note: Introduction; 1. From stage to page; 2. No escape; 3. Open futures; 4. Nora's exit; 5. The sphinx; 6. European breakthrough; 7. Copyright and circulation; 8. The many Ibsens; 9. The provincial world poet.
