    This edited collection brings together new research on public service interpreting and translation (PSIT) with a focus on ideology, ethics and policy development. The contributions provide fresh theoretical and empirical perspectives on the inconsistencies in translation and interpreting provision observed in different geonational contexts and the often-reported tensions between prescribed approaches to ethics and practitioner experience. The discussions are set against the backdrop of developments in rights-based discourses on language support services and the professionalisation of the field, drawing attention to how stakeholders and interpreting practitioners navigate the realities of service in the context of shifting ideological landscapes. Particular innovations in the collection include theorisations about policy and practice that draw on political science, applied ethics and paradigms of trauma-informed care. The volume also presents research on settings that have received limited attention to date such as prison and charitable services for survivors of violence and trauma

    This dissertation argues that Valerius Flaccus' Argonautica, Silius Italicus' Punica, and Papinius Statius' Thebaid use human encounters with nature to reflect on the morality of their poems' central characters. Interactions and conflicts with nature occur at programmatic points in the poems, further indicating their importance for the narratives. This common thread throughout all three epics points to a deeper interest in nature and the unknown beyond the edges of the empire. As such, ecocritical theory and theories of space and place have greatly informed my approach to this topic. By examining encounters with nature such as humans crossing geographical boundaries, cutting down forests, and fighting river gods, Flavian epic is shown to comment on the military exploits of the three Flavian emperors, their interactions with nature while on campaign, and the ideology of their regime.

    Mobility of high-income individuals across borders puts pressure on governments to lower taxes. A central tenet of the corresponding textbook argument is that mobile individuals react to tax differentials through migra- tion, and in turn immobile individuals vote for lower taxes. We investigate to which extent this argument is complete. In particular, political ideology may influence voting on taxes. We vary mobility and foreign taxes in a survey experiment within the German Internet Panel (GIP), with more than 3,000 individuals participating. We find that while the treatment effects qualitatively confirm model predictions how voters take mobility of high-income earners into account when choosing domestic taxes, ideology matters: left-leaning high-income individuals choose higher taxes and emigrate less frequently than right-leaning ones. These findings are in line with the comparative- static predictions of a simple model of inequality aversion when the aversion parameters vary with ideology.

    In lockerem Sachbuch-Stil erzählt Norbert Bischof von einer Zufallsbeobachtung und ihren Konsequenzen, die einen Grundpfeiler des Freud’schen Theoriegebäudes umstürzen und die Sozialwissenschaften nötigen, das Verhältnis von Natur und Kultur neu zu überdenken. Thema ist das Wirkungsgefüge der Motive, die die soziale Distanz und Abgrenzung regulieren: das scheinbar paradoxe Kräftespiel zwischen den Grundbedürfnissen nach Nähe, Wärme, Intimität einerseits und Unabhängigkeit, Selbstständigkeit, Autonomie andererseits. Ausgehend von reichem Datenmaterial aus vergleichender Verhaltensforschung und Kulturanthropologie entwirft der Autor eine Systemtheorie des »Psychischen Apparates«, die für die Praxis Orientierungshilfe bietet, aber auch allgemein eine Neubesinnung auf die Stellung des Menschen in der Natur anregt. Dies ist der erste Teil einer Trilogie, in der Norbert Bischof seinen Beitrag zur psychologischen Grundlagenforschung in Sachbuchform dargestellt hat. Hier legt er die vergleichend-ethologischen Fundamente zu einer Systemtheorie der Motivdynamik. Im zweiten Buch (Das Kraftfeld der Mythen) wechselt der Blick auf die Persönlichkeitsentwicklung und ihren Widerschein in den Bildern kultureller Weltdeutung. Das dritte Buch (Moral) dringt am tiefsten in philosophisches Territorium vor; sein Thema ist die Entstehung und der Stellenwert des normativen Überbaus menschlicher Verhaltensorganisation.

There will be two afterwords, preceded with this introduction: You have before you CUP’s 50th anniversary edition of Geoff Harcourt’s Some Cambridge Controversies in the Theory of Capital. The book is worthy of republication, and if the reader is not convinced by the text alone, these afterwords offer an explanation. Tiago Mata’s essay is a study of the book’s global career, tracing its reach in terms of geography and in terms of readerships. Avi J.     Since 9/11, there has been a surge in interest in the topic of violence both among scholars of religion and in the humanities more broadly. This article suggests that such works operate with a "hermeneutics of the spectacular" that functions to legitimate the liberal status quo by concentrating its focus upon the most visibly heinous forms of state violence under the aegis of a politics of "resistance." This article uses the New Testament and its depiction of the military as a site for thinking about how folk definitions come to classify certain activities as "violent" and not others, both today and in antiquity. If biblical scholarship—or the study of religion more broadly—is to be something other than an ideological repository for late capitalism, it is necessary to reconsider the issue. This article, by point of contrast, discusses three theoretical approaches to violence that may be useful: Objective-Structural Violence, Symbolic Violence, and Violent Subjectivities.

    Are preferences for reforms driven by individuals' own endowments or beliefs? To address this question, we conducted a cross-country survey on people's opinions on employment protection legislation-an area where reform has proven to be difficult and personal interests are at stake. We find that individuals' beliefs matter more than their own endowments and personal pay-offs. A randomized information treatment confirms that beliefs explain views about reform, but beliefs can change with new information. Our results are robust to several robustness tests, including to alternative estimation techniques and samples

    We investigate the relationship between political attitudes and prosociality in a survey of a representative sample of the U.S. population during the first summer of the COVID-19 pandemic. We find that an experimental measure of prosociality correlates positively with adherence to protective behaviors. Liberal political ideology predicts higher levels of protective behavior than conservative ideology, independently of the differences in prosociality across the two groups. Differences between liberals and conservatives are up to 4.4 times smaller in their behavior than in judging the government's crisis management. This result suggests that U.S. Americans are more polarized on ideological than behavioral grounds.

    Firms often discourage certain categories of individuals from buying their products, seemingly at odds with typical assumptions about profit maximization. This paper provides a potential rationale for such firm behavior: Consumers seek to signal that they have "desirable" ideological values to themselves and others by avoiding products popular among people with "undesirable" values. In laboratory experiments and surveys, I provide causal evidence that consumption can be diagnostic of consumers' ideologies and that demand for a product is lower if its customer base consists of individuals whose ideological values are widely considered undesirable. These effects occur for both observable and unobservable consumption and for products that do not possess any inherent ideological or undesirable qualities.

    This paper empirically links the efficiency and performance assessment of the general government, proxied by efficiency scores, to the trust in government. Government spending efficiency scores are first computed via data envelopment analysis (DEA). Then, relying on panel data and instrumental variable approaches, we estimate the effect of public sector efficiency on citizens trust on national governments. The sample covers 36 OECD countries between 2007 and 2019. We find that the more efficient countries in terms of government spending are Australia, Chile, Ireland, New Zealand, South Korea, Switzerland. Secondly, our main finding is that better public sector spending efficiency is positively associated with citizens’ higher trust in governments. In general, political economy variables and the existence of fiscal rules do not seem to significantly affect our measure of trust. Results were held using alternative proxies for public sector efficiency, specifications with different control variables and instrumental variables approaches.
