ger: Restless Subjects in Rigid Systems: Risiko und Spekulation in fiktionalen Texten des nordamerikanischen Pacific Rim um 2000.
Die Studie untersucht drei nordamerikanische fiktionale Texte, in deren Zentrum Konzepte von Risiko und Spekulation stehen. Neben ihrer Publikation innerhalb eines Jahrzehnts um die Jahrtausendwende verbindet Kathryn Bigelows Hollywood Film Strange Days (1995), Karen Tei Yamashitas Roman Tropic of Orange und Larissa Lais Roman Salt Fish Girl die subtile Darstellung von Risiko und Spekulation als neue Paradigmen politisch-ökonomischer und wissenschaftlicher Diskurse, die innerhalb der letzten Dekaden des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts besonders an der amerikanischen Westküste an Bedeutung gewonnen haben. Die Texte verhandeln diesen Paradigmenwechsel nicht nur, sondern ermöglichen die intensive Erfahrung von Kontingenz, Risiko und Spekulation durch eine elaborierte und selbst-reflexive Ästhetik, die zugleich elektronische Datenvermittlung als kulturell neue, epistemologische Bedingung politischer und ästhetischer Erfahrung ausstellt.
Bisher wurden Strange Days, Tropic of Orange und Salt Fish Girl hauptsächlich im Rahmen der hermeneutischen Kriterien von Gender Studies, Postcolonial Studies and Ethnicity Studies gelesen. Während die Texte, wie die Studie zeigt, die bekannten Kategorien von Rasse, Klasse und Geschlecht durchaus verhandeln, zeigen sie zugleich jedoch ihre Eingliederung in das politische Menschenbild eines unternehmerischen homo oeconomicus, das durch eine neue Allianz aus Neoliberalismus und Neokonservatismus hervorgebracht wird. Die Ästhetik der Texte und ihr Fokus auf Risiko und Spekulation formulieren eine Poetik der Spekulation und des Risikos, die einen kulturellen Vergleichsrahmen für die Untersuchung von fiktionalen und faktualen Diskursen in diesem historischen Moment bieten kann. eng: Restless Subjects in Rigid Systems: Risk and Speculation in Millennial Fictions of the North-American Pacific Rim.
The study focuses on three North-American fictional texts which negotiate concepts of risk and speculation. Published within a decade around 2000, Kathryn Bigelow's Hollywood film Strange Days (1995), Karen Tei Yamashita's novel Tropic of Orange (1997), and Larissa Lai's novel Salt Fish Girl (2002) address, reflect and criticize the significance of risk and speculation to factual discourses and practices of politics and science that have been gaining pertinence at the North-American Pacific Rim as the new frontier of capitalist development at the time of the texts' production. In applying distinct aesthetics of risk and speculation, these fictional texts allow an experience of these concepts as rationalities of governance and technologies to govern social problems. In self-reflective and meta-representational discourses Bigelow's, Yamashita's and Lai's millennial fictions at once expose the fictionalizing strategies applied by political-economic and scientific 'discourses of truth,' the compliance of the media with these strategies, and electronic information transfer as their epistemological condition. Thus far, Strange Days, Tropic of Orange, and Salt Fish Girl have mainly been read along the hermeneutic paradigms of Gender Studies, Postcolonial Studies, and/or Ethnicity Studies. The study shows, however, that, while certainly addressing issues of race, class and gender, the texts highlight the re-configuration of these categories within the rationality of neoliberalism that addresses political subjects exhaustively as economic agents. With their perceptive critique and aesthetically intricate negotiation of risk and speculation at a millennial North-American Pacific Rim these fictional texts delineate a poetics of risk and speculation, thus providing a cultural framework of comparison for fictional and factual North-American discourses at this historical moment.
