    Den Spanischen Bürgerkrieg neu und anders zu erzählen ist programmatisch für Populärmedien wie den Fantasyfilm El laberinto del Fauno, den Superheldencomic 1936, la batalla de Madrid oder das Videospiel Sombras de Guerra. Neu und anders bedeutet hier, dass sich die Werke im Spannungsfeld des »modernen Populären« verorten und auf Ausdrucks- und Medienformen des populärkulturellen Repertoires zurückgreifen. Daniela Kuschel zeigt auf, wie sie die realistischen Schreib- und Erzählweisen aufbrechen und umformen, die bislang als emblematisch für die Darstellung des Bürgerkriegs galten. Jenseits von Authentizität führen diese Modifikationen der Erinnerungslandschaft den Bedarf an neuen Ausdrucksformen individueller und kollektiver Erinnerung vor Augen.

    "Jewish Imaginaries of the Spanish Civil War provides unprecedented engagement with the Spanish Civil War as a point of departure and of compounding return for various writers and artists producing Jewish imaginaries who volunteered to fight fascism in the Iberian Peninsula in the late 1930s or responded from abroad, as well as their successors. These essays demonstrate the importance that this event - the preamble to the Second World War and the Shoah - has had for the Jewish people and Jewish cultural production through the 20th century and into the 21st. Jewish literature journalism, letters, and music from the war have much to tell about the encounter between old traditions and new experimentations, framed by urgency, migration, and messianic hope. Many were writing against the grain of canonic literature, where subtle forms of dissidence, manifested through language, structure, sound, and thought, sought to align with the anti-fascist fight. Most contributions in this volume discuss subaltern voices from across the globe - including from Germany, Argentina, Canada, Mexico, France, and Spain - which were left under the shadow of the continuously growing corpus of world literature of the Spanish Civil War. There is also an analysis of the “Jewishness” - aesthetics as well as ideas - of the secular imaginaries of these artists and intellectuals as embedded in Jewish topics and ethos. Jewish Imaginaries of the Spanish Civil War thus proposes to remember the cultural phenomena produced by the Spanish Civil War, demanding a new understanding of the cosmopolitan imaginaries in Jewish literature."--

    In der vorliegenden komparatistischen Dissertation werden Kriminalromane des spanischen Autors Manuel Vázquez Montalbán und des schottischen Autors Ian Rankin in Bezug auf das jeweils entworfene Stadtbild und die Darstellung von Zeitgeschichte innerhalb der Kriminalerzählungen analysiert und verglichen. Sowohl Barcelona als auch Edinburgh kommt eine Sonderstellung als Hauptstadt einer autonomen Region bzw. eines Landes mit Unabhängigkeitsbestrebungen zu. In dieser Arbeit wird herausgearbeitet, wie der Kriminalroman in besonderem Maße in der Lage ist, gesellschaftliche, historische und politische Prozesse darzustellen und bewusst zu machen und welche Rolle dabei den Detektivfiguren zukommt. Vázquez Montalbán und Rankin sind besondere Vertreter des Kriminalgenres, denn beide berichten über politische und historische Begebenheiten und tragen zur historischen Erinnerung bei. Vázquez Montalbán interpretiert Barcelona in einer kulturgeschichtlichen Abhandlung als Barcelonas, ein Konzept, das in dieser Arbeit auf seine Kriminalromane übertragen wird. Barcelona ist seit jeher eine nonkonformistische Stadt der Revolten, Revolutionen und Aufstände gewesen. Carvalho ist, trotz seiner galizischen Wurzeln, ein Kind seiner Stadt und auf der Seite der Verlierer des spanischen Bürgerkriegs. In Edinburgh wiederum sind die Dualität und Ambivalenz bereits in der Stadtgeschichte auf vielfältige Weise angelegt und ziehen sich auch durch die schottische Literaturgeschichte. Rankin griff diese Ambivalenz auf und erschuf in seinen Kriminalromanen das Bild einer geteilten Stadt Edinburgh. Beide Autoren geben ärmeren, benachteiligten Bevölkerungsgruppen eine Stimme, beschreiben und erschaffen selbst Erinnerungsorte und tragen so zu einer anderen als der offiziellen Geschichtsschreibung bei. Sie schreiben gegen das Vergessen an für ein Bewahren von Erinnerungen an vergangene Zeiten der (Nach)kriegszeit, der Diktatur, der Verlierererinnerungen bzw. der Opfer des Versiegens der Ressourcen oder sozial benachteiligter Personen.     Forced migrations and exiles are shocks that affect to the lives of millions of individuals. Among the consequences of this non-voluntary migration, the loss of a significant stock of human capital is of particular importance. The Republican exile in post-civil war Spain is an excellent case study since the traditional representation is that Spain lost highly qualified population. However, not that much has been said about the quantification of this loss or the measurement of the quality of the human capital that left Spain after the end of the civil war. This paper tries to fill this gap offering an estimation of the quality of the human capital that left Spain comparing it with the years that preceded and followed it and with economic migrants who were moving at the same time. Mexico was the major destination for Spanish refugees since the beginning of the Civil War and produced a unique primary source for analysing economic immigrants and refugees. We use multivariable regression models to estimate the existence of a skill premium in Republican refugees, analysing proxies of human capital like occupations, heights, and foreign languages spoken. Our results suggest that Spanish Republican refugees presented a skill premium compared to economic migrants. This result is particularly relevant because traditional economic migrants from Spain to Mexico have been considered a "privileged migration" given their high levels of human capital. The quality of the source allows us to extend the analysis to women human capital, an important contribution given the traditional invisibility of women in recorded economic history.

    This volume promotes recent and innovative research in different areas of knowledge within the scope of Iberian studies, contributing to the deepening and dissemination of this expanding research area.This book makes available new approaches to the study of Iberian and Ibero-American spaces and cultures, with particular emphasis on Portuguese-Galician, Basque and Catalan identities produced in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, and during dictatorship.A considerable number of chapters discuss issues of memory, reflecting the impact of the Historical Memory Law in Spain and its lively discussion in the public sphere. Social mobilization and economic dynamics also play an important role in this volume.
