    "The visceral logics of decolonization offers a question that shapes Khanna's primary decolonial intervention in this book: "What would it mean to undo the visceral lessons of colonialism in the habits of mind and emotive reflex of the postcolonial subject?" For Neetu Khanna the answers to this question are lodged within the artistic renderings of the Progressive Writer's Association, an anti-colonial, anti-orthodox Muslim writer's collective. Drawing on the work of Fanon, as well as queer and feminist theory, Khanna thinks through how affect circulates within anti-colonial struggle. Using the archives of Indian Marxist movements between the 1930s and the 1960s, Khanna theorizes the concept of "the visceral" as an embodied habit and feeling that emerges at the juncture of colonialism and nationalist movement. She argues that this affective corporeality shapes utopic visions of freedom for the gendered, colonial, Indian, citizen subject as they are imagined in the artistic experimentation of Indian progressive political movements. In chapter 1, Khanna begins describing the visceral inquiries of the book to explore the form and phenomenology of nationalist emotion as it emerges in Indian struggles for decolonization. Khanna locates the somatic unconscious in the tensed musculature of the politically agitated revolutionary subject and sets up this framework that is used throughout the rest of the book. Chapter 2 brings into focus the revolutionary promise of "the visceral" within the internationalist imaginary, which makes possible the transformation of feeling and consciousness. The female body comes into focus in chapter 3, highlighting how women's bodies become the focal objects of violent subjection by both colonial and anti-colonial nationalist regimes of discipline. Khanna discusses writer Ahmed Ali and The All-India Progressive Writers Association in chapter 4, and shows how visceral eruptions propel the engine of the national teleology of the progressive novel moving through mourning, grief, nostalgia, melancholy, and lamentation - necessary elements for revolutionary transformation. The book ends with a chapter about Fanon, returning to the anti-colonial theories of the most canonized figure in postcolonial studies and studies of decolonization through the alternative genealogy of the visceral opened up by the Progressive Writers movement. This book will be of interest to scholars in South Asian studies, post-colonial theory, and history"--

    Was ist Romantik? Um diese Frage zu beantworten, genügt es nicht, gängige literaturwissenschaftliche Auffassungen fortzuschreiben. Statt dessen soll es im vorliegenden Band darum gehen, eine Wissenskultur für die Romantik und deren Zeichensysteme lesbar zu machen. Die Beiträge reflektieren das Kommunikationsangebot romantischer Selbstverständigung über Literatur und Kunst interdisziplinär und rekonstruieren, wie in unterschiedlichen Medien, Diskursen und ästhetischen Verfahren die „Romantisierung der Welt" als Wissensordnung projiziert wird und wirkmächtig ausstrahlt. Sie bieten so die Möglichkeit zur exemplarischen Formulierung einer vielseitigen Kulturhermeneutik. What is Romanticism? To answer this question, it is not enough to perpetuate the established views propagated in literary studies. Instead, this volume is concerned with making readable a knowledge culture for Romanticism and its semiotic systems. The chapters reflect in an interdisciplinary manner the communication on offer from Romanticism of its own understanding of literature and art and reconstruct how in different media, discourses and aesthetic processes the "Romanticisation of the world" is projected and effected as an ordering of knowledge. Thus they provide an opportunity for the exemplary formulation of a versatile cultural hermeneutics.

    Literary studies' turn to politics in the wake of the radical social movements of the 1960s and 1970s supposedly meant the banishment of aesthetic considerations from the academy. As scholars asked what role literary works played in supporting or challenging dominant ideologies, a focus on the text's formal beauty and the pleasures it might elicit came to seem irresponsible or even complicit with the iniquities of the social order. Until quite recently, this suspicion of aesthetics was the default posture within literary scholarship, a means of establishing the rigor of one's thought and the purity of one's political commitments. And yet the widely accepted view that the discipline simply changed directions at some point in the final decades of the twentieth century cries out for further scrutiny. With many scholars advocating a renewal of attention to textual surfaces and aesthetic experiences, it is worth asking whether the break with midcentury formalism was quite as clean is it once appeared. Khanna focuses on the work of the Progressive Writers' Association (PWA)—a Marxist anticolonial literary group active in India between the 1930s and 1950s—to show how anticolonial literature is a staging ground for exploring racialized emotion and revolutionary feeling. Among others, Khanna examines novels by Mulk Raj Anand, Ahmed Ali, and Khwaja Ahmad Abbas, as well as the feminist writing of Rashid Jahan and Ismat Chughtai, who each center the somatic life of the body as a fundamental site of colonial subjugation. In this way, decolonial action comes not solely from mental transformation, but from a reconstitution of the sensorial nodes of the body. The visceral, Khanna contends, therefore becomes a critical dimension of Marxist theories of revolutionary consciousness. In tracing the contours of the visceral's role in decolonial literature and politics, Khanna bridges affect and postcolonial theory in new and provocative ways
