    Die Migrations- und Fluchtbewegungen der letzten Jahre haben die Rahmenbedingungen professionellen Handelns in Schulen sowie in Institutionen der Erwachsenenbildung maßgeblich verändert. Sie haben u.a. die Frage aufgeworfen, wie Modelle sprachlicher Förderung und Bildung konzipiert sein sollten, um einen möglichst nahtlosen Übergang neu zugewanderter Schülerinnen und Schüler in das Regelschulsystem zu ermöglichen. Dieser Band bietet einen Überblick über Konzepte und Maßnahmen zur Förderung von Deutsch als Zweitsprache im Kontext von Flucht und Migration, die in den letzten Jahren im deutschsprachigen Raum entwickelt wurden. Er bietet darüber hinaus diskurskritische Perspektiven auf bildungspolitische Debatten zu der Frage, wie sprachliches Lernen und Wertebildung in einer Migrationsgesellschaft aussehen sollte. Auch wenn sich die Überlegungen und Vorschläge vorrangig auf die österreichischen Bildungslandschaft beziehen, so lassen sie sich ohne Anstrengung und ohne Abstriche auch auf die deutschen Bildungsinstitutionen und auf die deutsche Integrationsdebatte eröffnen, gibt es doch auch hier ähnliche bildungspolitische Vorbehalte.     Dieser Artikel untersucht die Darstellung des français populaire im autobiografischen Roman En finir avec Eddy Bellegueule von Édouard Louis. Im Mittelpunkt steht die direkte Rede, die die Sprechweise der unteren sozialen Schicht darstellen soll. Die Analyse zeigt, dass der Autor in Wirklichkeit sprachliche Formen verwendet, die im Mündlichen bei allen Sprechern vorkommen, aber im Geschriebenen, insbesondere in einem literarischen Kontext, sozial konnotiert sind, weil sie nicht dem Standardfranzösischen entsprechen. Im Roman von Édouard Louis wirkt die direkte Rede zudem deshalb so ‚populärsprachlich‘, weil sie dem literarischen Stil des Ich-Erzählers systematisch gegenübergestellt wird. This paper examines the representation of français populaire in Édouard Louis’s autobiographical novel En finir avec Eddy Bellegueule. It focuses on direct speech, which is supposed to represent the usage of working-class speakers. The analysis reveals that the author in fact uses forms that are shared by all speakers in spoken language, but which are socially connoted in written language, especially in a literary context, because they do not correspond to Standard French. Moreover, the direct speech presented in Édouard Louis’s novel appears strongly ‘working-class’ because it is systematically contrasted with the literary style of the first-person narrator.

    Abstract: Serious games are designed to educate, train, or persuade their players on specific topics and issues. While a lot of studies have sought to prove the effects of these games, the overall image and legitimization of serious games has not benefited fully from these efforts. Indicating that the issue stems from the difference between the captive audience exposed to games in effects studies and the contexts in which people come to play serious games in everyday life, the current article sketches out the research that needs to be performed before this gap can be filled. Three theoretical perspectives are offered, in turn looking at serious games as forms of (promotional) communication, personal media experiences, and technological innovations. This analysis results in insights relating to (among others), how the identity of serious games might hinder their diffusion, how expected gratifications could fail to match the intentions of these games, and what could cause someone to ‘adopt’ a

    How are natives attitudes towards migrants shaped by economic crises? Natives could show more compassion towards migrants as everyone faces a common threat. Alternatively, natives prejudice could rise as competition for scarce economic opportunities increases. We conduct an online survey to 3,400 Colombian citizens and randomly prime half of them to think about the economic consequences of COVID-19, before eliciting their altruism and attitudes towards Venezuelan migrants. We find that natives attitudes towards migrants are substantially more negative in the treatment relative to the control group. Individuals ages 18 to 25 years, however, respond to the treatment by showing more altruism.

    We use data from the Pew Global Attitudes Survey to analyse how public attitudes towards trade have changed over time in developed economies, and how these attitudes differ across groups in the population. Attitudes towards trade deteriorated in the 2000s before the onset of the financial crisis, with declines tending to be greater in countries that also saw larger increases in Chinese import competition. Perhaps surprisingly, given that barriers to trade appear to be on the increase again after several decades of steady decline, attitudes towards trade improved again during the last decade both in the US and in leading European economies. Comparing across survey respondents with different individual characteristics, those without a university education are less likely to have a favourable impression of international trade, and to believe that it has specific benefits in terms of reducing prices, creating jobs, or increasing wages. While economists often emphasize the consumer benefits of trade due to lower prices, only 20-40% of survey respondents in most countries perceive such a price effect, suggesting that the benefits of trade may not be salient for many people.

People who reveal preferences for spending items (more on police, military, border protection; less on education, health, environment) that are associated with communitarian (rather than universalist) moral perspectives generally show weaker support for progressive reforms, but more communitarians change their views as a result of personal experience. The results are consistent with previous findings that economic upheavals can mold individuals' views on policy matters

    The existing literature provides evidence that public opinion and attitudes often affect public policy. However, little is known on how public policy might affect public attitudes and norms. I present new evidence on this topic by using age-based health insurance policies in the United States as natural experiments. I first exploit the discrete change in insurance coverage rates at age 26 due to the Affordable Care Act's dependent coverage mandate and show that this policy is associated with statistically significant deterioration in attitudes towards the necessity of health insurance among young adults who are affected by this policy the most. Next, I show that gaining health insurance at 65 due to the onset of Medicare does not have a significant impact on attitudes towards health insurance among the elderly. These findings are widespread across different demographic groups, robust under alternative model specifications, observed only after the policies are adopted, and highlight the importance of age in attitude formation.

    Ländliche Regionen fungieren seit dem deutlichen Anstieg von Geflüchteten im Jahr 2014 häufiger als Orte des Ankommens und Integration. Die Rolle ländlicher Ankunftsgesellschaften bzw. die Ein-stellungen der lokalen Residenzbevölkerung für die Integrationspotenziale stehen allerdings selten im Blick der Forschung. Dieses Working Paper thematisiert daher die Einstellungen der Residenzbevölkerung von 40 ländlichen Kommunen in Deutschland. Hierzu wurden 904 Personen in ländlichen Gemeinden in Bayern, Hessen, Niedersachsen und Sachsen zu ihren Einstellungsmustern und Einschätzungen ihres nachbarschaftlichen Zusammenlebens schriftlich befragt. Das Working Paper gibt Einblicke in die Ergebnisse und diskutiert die Rolle von sozialem Miteinander und positiven wie negativen Einflussfaktoren für die Aufnahmebereitschaft der lokalen Bevölkerung. Dabei liegt ein Fokus auf der ländlichen Spezifik sowie regionalen Unterschieden. Die hier vorgestellten Ergebnisse entstanden im Rahmen des Verbundprojekts „Zukunft für Geflüchtete in ländlichen Räumen Deutschlands“ im Teilprojekt „Rolle der Zivilgesellschaft und Einstellungen der Aufnahmegesell-schaft“ unter Federführung der TU Chemnitz. Since the increasing numbers of refugees in 2014, rural regions have more often served as places of arrival and integration. However, the role of rural arrival communities and the attitudes of the resident population remain rather blind spots in research. Therefore, this working paper focuses on the attitudes of the resident population or 40 rural communities in Germany. It refers to a data set of 904 persons in rural communities in Bavaria, Hesse, Lower Saxony and Saxony on attitudes on immigration and arrival of foreigners in the locality, and an assessments of neighborhood con-ditions. The working paper provides insights into the results and discusses the role of social capital as well as determinants for the receptivity of the local population. The working paper also points out rural specifics and regional differences. The data set was collected as part of the joint project "Future for Refugees in Rural Areas of Germany" in the sub-project "Role of Civil Society and Attitudes of the Host Society" (Chemnitz University of Technology).

    How are natives' attitudes towards migrants shaped by economic crises? Natives could show more empathy towards migrants as everyone faces a common threat. Alternatively, natives' prejudice could rise as competition for scarce economic opportunities increases. We conduct an online survey to 3,400 Colombian citizens and randomly prime half of them to think about the economic consequences of COVID-19, before eliciting their altruism and attitudes towards Venezuelan forced migrants. We find that natives' attitudes towards migrants are substantially more negative in the treatment relative to the control group. Individuals ages 18 to 25 years, however, respond by showing more altruism.
