    This Ph.D. thesis focuses on the demand-side management in electricity markets and a new player in the market { an aggregator of exible demand. The thesis consists of three independent chapters investigating the entrance of this new player in the power markets from di erent angles: focusing on the aggregator, a large power consumer and a producer. The rst chapter, \Aggregation of demand-side exibility in electricity markets: the e ects of portfolio choice", analyses the performance of the aggregator depending on its portfolio choice. I have investigated several portfolios of di erent exibility sources: electrical vehi- cles, heat pumps and/or home appliances like washing machines, dryers and dish washers. I have used Nord Pool power market data for Denmark's bidding area DK2 to identify the e ects of the portfolio choice on the imbalance payments and compensations to consumers that provide exibility. The results show that di erent compositions of exibility sources lead to di erent imbalance payments and compensations to consumers. However, there is no signi cant additional value of having an access to all types of exibility sources unless there is a xed contract cost. This suggests that the aggregator would choose to specialise in cer- tain types of exibility sources. Also, I nd that the incentives for consumers to participate in demand-side management programs might be not su cient, since the compensation for the provided exibility is very low.

    Um die Klimaziele des Übereinkommens von Paris einzuhalten, ist eine Transformation zur Dekarbonisierung der Energieversorgung notwendig. Für Europa bedeutet dies u. a. aufgrund landwirtschaftlicher Sockelemissionen eine weitestgehend CO2-freie Stromerzeugung bis spätestens 2050. Damit dieses Ziel im Rahmen einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung erreicht werden kann, ist eine weitestgehend auf erneuerbaren Energieträgern (EE) basierende Stromver-sorgung erforderlich. Die entsprechende Transformation birgt Herausforderungen für das Stromsystem, die durch eine Vielzahl technologischer Optionen gelöst werden können. Daher stellt sich die Frage, welche dieser sehr vielfältigen Optionen wann und in welchem Umfang genutzt werden sollten. Dabei sind die Substitutionsmöglichkeiten zwischen den Optionen und die komplexen Wechselwirkungen zwischen allen Systemelementen zu beachten. Das Umweltbundesamt (UBA) hat die Connect Energy Economics GmbH (Connect) daher damit beauftragt, effiziente Transformationspfade der Stromerzeugung bis 2050 modellgestützt zu identifizieren. Die analysierten Szenarien bilden dabei die Entwicklung des deutschen und euro-päischen Versorgungssystems bei ambitionierten CO2-Zielen unter verschiedenen Rahmenbe-dingungen ab. Die Ergebnisse der Szenarien zeigen, dass sich die analysierten Transformations-pfade des Stromsystems durch große technologische Vielfalt, hohe Flexibilität und eine umfas-sende Nutzung der Vorteile des europäischen Binnenmarktes für Strom auszeichnen. Auch für sehr ambitionierte Klimaziele bestehen Lösungen für eine weitestgehend CO2-freie und zugleich kostengünstige und sichere Versorgung. In order to meet the climate target of the Paris Agreement, a transformation towards a decar-bonized energy supply is necessary. For Europe, this means a largely CO2-free generation of electricity by 2050 at the latest. In order to achieve this goal in the course of a sustainable development, a power supply based largely on renewable energy sources (RES) is required. The corresponding transformation poses challenges for the power system, which can be solved by a variety of technological options. Therefore, the question arises, which of these very diverse options should be used when and to what extent. In this context, the substitution possibilities between the options and the complex interactions between all system elements should be taken into account.The Federal Environment Agency (UBA) has therefore commissioned Connect Energy Economics GmbH (Connect) to identify efficient transformation paths for power generation by 2050 based on quantitative models. The analyzed scenarios depict the development of the German and European supply system for ambitious CO2 targets under various conditions. The results of the scenarios show that the analyzed transformation paths of the electricity system are characterized by a high level of technological diversity, high flexibility and a comprehensive exploitation of the advantages of the European internal power market. Solutions for a largely CO2-free and at the same time affordable and secure power supply exist also for very ambitious climate targets.

    The ASEAN member states have a long-standing goal to establish multilateral power trading in the region. To date, regional power trading has been limited to a series of uncoordinated bilateral cross-border arrangements. Multilateral power trading can bring multiple benefits, including reduced system costs, increased energy security and an ability to integrate higher shares of variable renewable energy. An examination of international experiences shows that it is possible to establish multilateral trading while allowing for stepwise and voluntary development and respecting local sovereignty. At the same time, increased cross-border integration and power trade does require increased co-ordination and regulatory harmonisation. This report identifies a set of minimum political, technical and institutional requirements that the ASEAN member states will need to meet in order to establish multilateral power trading in the region. Some of these minimum requirements can be met by building upon existing efforts in the region. The report also proposes a set of trading arrangements of increasing levels of ambition which, taken together, will enable ASEAN to establish multilateral power trading in a manner that is consistent with maximising national sovereignty and the equitable sharing of benefits. These recommendations include a summary of potential roles for regional institutions and an example transaction to show how trading might potentially work in practice.
