    Aborder l'œuvre de Cornelius Castoriadis à partir du projet d'autonomie, c'est tâcher d'en ressaisir la cohérence : foisonnante, pouvant paraître hétérogène, et prétendant dépasser l'opposition théorie / pratique, elle s'éclaire et s'ordonne dès qu'on la considère selon cet axe. La thèse soutenue est que l'attention portée par Castoriadis à l'effectivité de la réalité sociale et historique se mêle indissolublement à la question de l'autonomie, de sorte que tout chez lui peut et doit se comprendre à partir d'une interrogation principielle : comment l'autonomie est-elle possible ? Question qu'il faut entendre, suivant la polysémie du terme "possible", en un double sens : comment l'autonomie a-t-elle pu émerger dans l'histoire ? ; comment l'organiser ? Après avoir montré, en une première partie, comment la saisie de ce problème conduit Castoriadis à une prise de distance vis-à-vis du marxisme, la deuxième et la troisième partie envisagent, respectivement, ces deux questions To approach Cornelius Castoriadis's work from the project of autonomy, we first have to try and grasp its coherence : it is abundant, it can seem heterogeneous, and claim to go beyond the opposition theory / practice, therefore it becomes clearer and organized as soon as we consider it according to this axis. The defended thesis here is that Castoriadis's attention regarding the effectiveness of social and historical reality is inextricably linked to the question of autonomy, so that for him everything can and has to be understood from a basic question: How is autonomy possible ? A question which has to be understood according to the double meaning of the word "possible": how could autonomy appear in history ? How can it be organized ? The first part of this work will try and show how the grasp of this problem leads Castoriadis to distance himself from Marxism; the second and third parts will respectively focus on these two questions

    Exister, c'est articuler une forme, à tous les moments de la vie. Ainsi : naître et mourir, souffrir et jouir, être jeune et vieillir, subir le handicap, travailler et parler en sont quelques expressions fondamentales. Toutes sont en vérité de l'art. Non pas l'art d'exister ou de décréter la signification de l'existence, surtout pas, mais celui de rendre l'existence possible à travers les aléas de sa désarticulation au demeurant insurmontable. Car si tous les hommes sont artistes par la nécessité de trouver une forme, si chacune est bien un absolu, en revanche aucune ne peut être vécue ou considérée comme définitive. Il faut donc retourner au mot d'existence pour y voir autre chose qu'un "projet" , une recherche d'authenticité ou de bonheur, mais des états organisés par chacun, composés et peints par certains, racontés aussi par d'autres, parfois au risque de la folie, qui décrivent un "autre état" ou une "existence poétique" . L'articulation de l'existence est cette aventure infinie dans laquelle elle se traduit. Philosophes (Rousseau, Hegel, Heidegger, Deleuze, Derrida, Lacoue-Labarthe), psychanalystes (Freud, Theodor Reik), poètes (Hölderlin), peintres (Hélène Schjerfbeck), musiciens (Robert Schumann, Robert Wyatt), personnages (le Lenz de Büchner), écrivains (Goethe, Robert Musil, Marcel Proust, Elie Wiesel) sont autant de créateurs de formes pour dire non pas comment il faut exister, mais les conditions de l'existence. C'est à travers ces formes que s'ouvre à chaque fois du sens

    Au XXe siècle, à la lumière du totalitarisme et des impuissances de la démocratie libérale, de nombreux penseurs formulent un diagnostic de crise : crise de la politique et crise de la rationalité. Au premier rang d’entre eux, Leo Strauss et Hannah Arendt invitent à interroger dans ce cadre la nature du projet moderne. Notre objectif est de mettre en parallèle leurs démarches respectives selon plusieurs axes : l’établissement du fait de la crise, la détermination du rapport entre modernité et tradition, la mise au jour des modalités de leur parcours dans le passé de la pensée. Mais cette parenté des démarches va manifester une nette opposition de projet. Strauss définit la crise moderne comme une crise de la raison et préconise un retour à la philosophie classique et au mode de vie du philosophe, qui doit maintenir l’écart entre la raison et la réalité politique. Arendt considère à l’inverse que la crise est politique ; il est urgent de se situer en son sein, d’adopter le point de vue du monde en initiant un processus de compréhension qui se distingue fondamentalement de la recherche classique de la vérité philosophique. Alors que Strauss invite à réhabiliter, à rebours du projet moderne, le concept classique d’une nature humaine définie par ses fins les plus hautes, Arendt montre la nécessité d’abandonner l’idée de nature humaine pour penser la condition humaine, c’est-à-dire les modalités de l’existence dans leur correspondance avec leurs conditions fondamentales. The major two of them are Leo Strauss and Hannah Arendt, who endeavour to analyse the project of modernity. Our purpose is to compare their respective approach to the problem, considering: how the fact of crisis is stated, how they determine the relationship between modernity and tradition, and how each of them refers to the history of thought. In spite of their similar approach to the problem, those philosophers express different designs. Strauss defines modern crisis as a crisis of rationality; therefore he advocates a return to classical philosophy and to a philosophical way of life which should hold the gap between reason and political facts. On the other side, Arendt thinks this is a political crisis; we must urgently analyse it from the point view of the world, by working out a process of understanding which should radically differ from the usual quest of philosophical truth. Whereas Strauss, versus the project of modernity, proposes to bring back into favour the classical idea of human nature, with its highest goals, Arendt proves that we’d better give up the idea of human nature, so as to think properly the human condition – that is to say the forms of living in connexion with their basic conditions. Thus, this work tackles with the problem of establishing which one of those two political thoughts would be the best to help us analyse our modern situation and find out a solution to crisis

La thèse soutenue est que l'attention portée par Castoriadis à l'effectivité de la réalité sociale et historique se mêle indissolublement à la question de l'autonomie, de sorte que tout chez lui peut et doit se comprendre à partir d'une interrogation principielle : comment l'autonomie est-elle possible ? Question qu'il faut entendre, suivant la polysémie du terme "possible", en un double sens : comment l'autonomie a-t-elle pu émerger dans l'histoire ? ; comment l'organiser ? Après avoir montré, en une première partie, comment la saisie de ce problème conduit Castoriadis à une prise de distance vis-à-vis du marxisme, la deuxième et la troisième partie envisagent, respectivement, ces deux questions To approach Cornelius Castoriadis's work from the project of autonomy, we first have to try and grasp its coherence : it is abundant, it can seem heterogeneous, and claim to go beyond the opposition theory / practice, therefore it becomes clearer and organized as soon as we consider it according to this axis. The defended thesis here is that Castoriadis's attention regarding the effectiveness of social and historical reality is inextricably linked to the question of autonomy, so that for him everything can and has to be understood from a basic question: How is autonomy possible ? A question which has to be understood according to the double meaning of the word "possible": how could autonomy appear in history ? How can it be organized ? The first part of this work will try and show how the grasp of this problem leads Castoriadis to distance himself from Marxism; the second and third parts will respectively focus on these two questions

    Au XXe siècle, à la lumière du totalitarisme et des impuissances de la démocratie libérale, de nombreux penseurs formulent un diagnostic de crise : crise de la politique et crise de la rationalité. Au premier rang d’entre eux, Leo Strauss et Hannah Arendt invitent à interroger dans ce cadre la nature du projet moderne. Notre objectif est de mettre en parallèle leurs démarches respectives selon plusieurs axes : l’établissement du fait de la crise, la détermination du rapport entre modernité et tradition, la mise au jour des modalités de leur parcours dans le passé de la pensée. Mais cette parenté des démarches va manifester une nette opposition de projet. Strauss définit la crise moderne comme une crise de la raison et préconise un retour à la philosophie classique et au mode de vie du philosophe, qui doit maintenir l’écart entre la raison et la réalité politique. Arendt considère à l’inverse que la crise est politique ; il est urgent de se situer en son sein, d’adopter le point de vue du monde en initiant un processus de compréhension qui se distingue fondamentalement de la recherche classique de la vérité philosophique.
