    "Ist Lesen historisch?" Keine harmlose Frage. An die Antwort knüpfen sich Leitvorstellungen vom Wandel der Kommunikationsmedien. Wie ist eine Mediengeschichte, die literarische Medien einbezieht, künftig zu denken? Positive wie negative Versionen von Fortschrittsgeschichten überzeugen kaum noch. Eine exemplarische Alternative ist der Versuch, Lesen als Operation historisch zu beobachten. Entgegen der Tendenz, Lektüre zu universalisieren oder den Wandel im Lesen auf äußere Bedingungen zurückzuführen, begreift die 'innere' Geschichte Lektüre als Medium mit eigenen Widerständen. Das Lesen ist in sich selbst zu unterscheiden. Die 'innere' Geschichte zeigt, wie Lektüretechniken im kulturellen Wandel der Kommunikationsmedien Allianzen eingehen und aufgrund welcher Funktionen sie Vorzug vor anderen Möglichkeiten erhalten. Anhand eingehender Lektüre unauffälliger wie einschlägiger Thematisierungen des Lesens von der Antike bis ins 19. Jahrhundert– von Quintilian, Cicero und Augustinus über Erasmus, Herder und Nietzsche– werden Bausteine zu einer Geschichte des Lesens vorgelegt, die differenzierter beobachten kann als das alte Modell von der lauten Lektüre und ihrem Verstummen in der Neuzeit. Eine besondere Rolle spielt J.M. Gesners "Kunst des Lesens" als Koppelung von Lektüregeschwindigkeiten aus dem 18. Jahrhundert, die ihre Herkunft von der Romanlektüre nimmt und in der Lesepoetologie C.M. Wielands eine ausgeklügelte literarische Umsetzung unter Buchmarktbedingungen erfährt

Until recently, historians of reading have concentrated on book ownership and trying to map out a history of who read what. The reading experience has been a subject more difficult to research. As has been pointed out before, egodocuments can be valuable sources in this case. Following this lead, Literacy in Everyday Life focuses upon four early modern Dutch diaries in which readers document their daily life and in which they recount their reading. In the analysis, other ways in which these four readers communicated are also addressed, especially speech and writing. This book therefore provides an insight into the possible uses of literacy and the interaction between the printed, written and spoken word in the early modern Dutch Republic

    The proliferation of book clubs, reading groups, "outline" volumes, and new forms of book reviewing in the first half of the twentieth century influenced the tastes and pastimes of millions of Americans. By examining both the form and content of this popularization of literature, Joan Rubin recaptures here an activity that brought the humanities to the general public on an unprecedented scale. In doing so, she provides the first comprehensive analysis of the rise of American middlebrow culture and the values encompassed by it. Exploring the democratization of culture in a consumer society, Rubin concentrates on five important expressions of the middlebrow: the establishment of book clubs, including the founding of the Book-of-the-Month Club; the beginnings of "great books" programs; the creation ofthe New York Herald Tribune's book-review section; the popularity of such works as Will Durant's The Story of Philosophy; and the emergence of literary radio programs. Rubin also investigates the lives and expectations of the individuals who shaped these middlebrow enterprises--such figures as Stuart Pratt Sherman, Irita Van Doren, Henry Seidel Canby, Dorothy Canfield Fisher, John Erskine, William Lyon Phelps, Alexander Woollcott, and Clifton Fadiman. By demonstrating that an emphasis on character, liberal learning, and aesthetic training at least partly animated many of these writers, she revises the conventional view that the genteel tradition in American letters had vanished by World War I. Moreover, as she pursues the significance of these cultural intermediaries who connected elites and the masses by interpreting ideas to the public, Rubin forces a reconsideration of the boundary between high culture and popular sensibility

    "Ist Lesen historisch?" Keine harmlose Frage. An die Antwort knüpfen sich Leitvorstellungen vom Wandel der Kommunikationsmedien. Wie ist eine Mediengeschichte, die literarische Medien einbezieht, künftig zu denken? Positive wie negative Versionen von Fortschrittsgeschichten überzeugen kaum noch. Eine exemplarische Alternative ist der Versuch, Lesen als Operation historisch zu beobachten. Entgegen der Tendenz, Lektüre zu universalisieren oder den Wandel im Lesen auf äußere Bedingungen zurückzuführen, begreift die 'innere' Geschichte Lektüre als Medium mit eigenen Widerständen. Das Lesen ist in sich selbst zu unterscheiden. Die 'innere' Geschichte zeigt, wie Lektüretechniken im kulturellen Wandel der Kommunikationsmedien Allianzen eingehen und aufgrund welcher Funktionen sie Vorzug vor anderen Möglichkeiten erhalten. Anhand eingehender Lektüre unauffälliger wie einschlägiger Thematisierungen des Lesens von der Antike bis ins 19. Jahrhundert– von Quintilian, Cicero und Augustinus über Erasmus, Herder und Nietzsche– werden Bausteine zu einer Geschichte des Lesens vorgelegt, die differenzierter beobachten kann als das alte Modell von der lauten Lektüre und ihrem Verstummen in der Neuzeit. Eine besondere Rolle spielt J.M. Gesners "Kunst des Lesens" als Koppelung von Lektüregeschwindigkeiten aus dem 18. Jahrhundert, die ihre Herkunft von der Romanlektüre nimmt und in der Lesepoetologie C.M. Wielands eine ausgeklügelte literarische Umsetzung unter Buchmarktbedingungen erfährt

    Why was the topic of women and reading so controversial for the Victorians and Edwardians? What was it assumed that women read, and what advice was given about where, when, and how to read? Kate Flint examines texts ranging from fiction, painting, and poetry, through medical and psychoanalytic works, advice manuals and periodicals, to autobiographies and contemporary social research, in her detailed and readable study of this central cultural debate in nineteenth-century society. Engaging also with debates in recent feminist theory, she explores the manipulation of the figure of the woman reader in well-known works like Charlotte Bronte's Shirley and Virginia Woolf's The Voyage Out, in sensation novels and New Woman fiction, and in stories found in series such as The Princess's Novelettes.
