This richly suggestive book examines the common bonds of thought and shared manner of expression that unite Jewish writers working in America, Eastern Europe, and Israel. Murray Baumgarten shows how Jewish traditions are reflected in the themes and narrative style of a diverse group of writers, including Saul Bellow, Henry Roth, Sholom Aleichen, Isaac Babel, and S.Y. Agnon. Baumgarten finds in these writers a distinctive and symbolic use of the urban scene arid style of life—whether the city is Brooklyn, Chicago, Vienna, Warsaw, Odessa, or Jerusalem. He examines the pariah stance, and the different kinds of tension between freedom from communal ties and the pull of traditional culture. He demonstrates how Yiddish can flavor and inflect the syntax, how scripture can permeate the thinking and narrative devices, in writers of various nationalities

The use of an alphabetic script links the Jewish, Christian and Muslim cultures in the Middle Ages. There have always been intensive interrelationships between the religions of these cultures, inter alia through translations of important (sacred) texts. Cultural transmissions such as these also involved conflicts of translation, as they introduced reference texts which were binding on religion, culture and law and thus excluded other reference texts. "The Hasidic leader R. Nachman of Braslav (1772-1810) has held a place in the Jewish popular imagination for over two centuries. Some see him as the (self-proclaimed) Messiah, others as the forerunner of modern Jewish literature. Existing studies struggle between these dueling readings, largely ignoring questions of aesthetics and politics in his work. A Permanent Beginning lays out a new paradigm for understanding R. Nachman's thought and writing, and with them, the beginnings Jewish literary modernity. Yitzhak Lewis examines the connections between imperial modernization processes in Eastern Europe at the turn of the eighteenth century and the emergence of "modern literature" in the storytelling of R. Nachman. Reading his tales and teachings alongside the social, legal, and intellectual history of the time, the book's guiding question is literary: How does R. Nachman represent this changing environment in his writing? Lewis paints a nuanced and fascinating portrait of a literary thinker and creative genius at the very moment his world was evolving unrecognizably. He argues compellingly that R. Nachman's narrative response to his changing world was a major point of departure for Jewish literary modernity."--

"In the past years, reflections on Jewish literatures and theoretical and methodological approaches discussed in Comparative Literature have converged. Places and Forms of Encounter in Jewish Literatures. Transfer, Mediality and Situativity brings together close readings and contextualizations of Jewish literatures with theories discussed in Comparative and World Literature Studies. The contributions are arranged in five chapters capturing central processes, actors and dynamics in the making of literatures, namely Literary Agents, Literary Figures, Writing Voids, Making of Literatures and Perceiving and Creating Languages. The volume seeks to illuminate the interrelations between literary systems, and to highlight Jewish literatures as a prism for encounters on the levels of text, discourse and culture, and their transformative force"--

"Demonstrating the pervasive presence of God in modern Hebrew literature, this book explores the qualities that twentieth century Hebrew writers attributed to the divine, and examines their functions against the simplistic dichotomy between religious and secular literature. The volume follows both chronological and thematic paths, offering a panoramic and multi-layered analysis of the various strategies in which modern Hebrew writers, from the turn of the 19th century through the 21st century pursued in their attempt to represent the divine in the face of metaphysical, theological and representational challenges. Modern Hebrew literature emerged during the nineteenth century as part of the Haskalah (Jewish Enlightenment) movement, which attempted to break from the traditional modes of Jewish intellectual and social life. The Hebrew literature that arose in this period embraced the rebellious nature of the Haskalah and is therefore commonly characterized as secular in nature, defying Orthodoxy and rejecting the old Hebrew God. Examining these radical changes in modern Jewish literature on the divine, this volume is a key text for scholars and students interested in modern Hebrew literature, religion, literature and Jewish studies"

In this book, Françoise Mirguet traces the appropriation and reinterpretation of pity by Greek-speaking Jewish communities of Late Antiquity. Pity and compassion, in this corpus, comprised a hybrid of Hebrew, Greek, and Roman constructions; depending on the texts, they were a spontaneous feeling, a practice, a virtue, or a precept of the Mosaic law. The requirement to feel for those who suffer sustained the identity of the Jewish minority, both creating continuity with its traditions and emulating dominant discourses. Mirguet's book will be of interest to scholars of early Judaism and Christianity for its sensitivity to the role of feelings and imagination in the shaping of identity. An important contribution to the history of emotions, it explores the role of the emotional imagination within the context of Roman imperialism. It also contributes to understanding how compassion has come to be so highly valued in Western cultures

"The account of the exodus of the Israelite slaves from Egypt under Moses has shaped the theology and community identity of both Jews and Christians across the centuries. Its reception in later scriptures and religious writings, as well as in art and music, continues to inspire liberation movements across the globe. This volume brings together an international group of scholars to explore the re-use of the exodus narratives across a wide range of early Jewish and Christian literature including the Apocrypha and the New Testament. The contributors engage with wider questions of methodology and the impact of social and cultural context on biblical interpretation. Contributors are: David Allen, Garrick V. Allen, Sean A. Adams, Joshua J. Coutts, Maurice Gilbert SJ, Susan E. Gillingham, Camilla von Heijne, Erkki Koskenniemi, Anne M. O'Leary PBVM, Rita Müller-Fieberg, Patricia Murray IBVM, Mika S. Pajunen, Jenny Read-Heimerdinger, Benedetta Rossi, Agnethe Siquans."

"An in-depth, thorough exploration of modern Jewish literature from 1492 to the 21st century, rotating around the concept of "aterritoriality" to appreciate the diasporic journey Jews have embarked on across geographic and linguistic spheres from 1492 to the present. At the centre of it are canonical figures like Franz Kafka, Isaac Babel, Bruno Schulz, Anne Frank, Martin Buber, Hannah Arendt, Isaac Bashevis Singer, Saul Bellow, Philip Roth, Grace Paley, Jacobo Timerman, Moacyr Scliar, and Susan Sontag. Unlike the output of other national literatures, Jewish literature doesn't have a fixed address. As a result, its practitioners are at once insiders and outsiders"--

The story of Jewish literature spans the globe as well as the centuries. It includes groups as diverse as the marrano poets and memorialists in medieval Spain, the Yiddish writings of Eastern Europe, the narratives of Jewish immigrants to the United States, the accounts of horror during the Holocaust, the work of Israeli authors since the creation of the Jewish state in 1948, and Jewish works in Brazil, Bulgaria, Argentina, and South Africa at the end of the twentieth century. In this thought-provoking introduction to Jewish literature from 1492 to the present, Ilan Stavans focuses on its multilingual and transnational nature, presents its subject through the kaleidoscope of its many writers and traditions
