"Systems Failure is the first book to consider English fiction of the long eighteenth century as a sweeping critique of Enlightenment system-building. It examines literary responses to various schemes of social organization, from Johnson's tracking of urban encounters in the Life of Savage and Sterne's anatomization of interpersonal relationships in A Sentimental Journey to Austen's marriage plots and De Quincey's essays on the circulation of the mail and the contemplation of the cosmos. Franta is interested in how writers take up civil and cultural institutions designed to rationalize society (cities, maps, transportation and postal systems, commercial society and the market economy, courtship and marriage, sentimental exchanges, political parties) only to complicate them, stretching their organizational and explanatory resources until they unravel. In this unraveling, literature arrives at its most penetrating insights about the structure of social life. Narrative becomes a tool for critique and a form in which aspects of the social world that elude systematic representation can be figured; these texts thus compose a tradition that runs alongside but contests our received ideas about the rise of the novel. If the main line of the novel depicts the individual's place in society, these authors explore the constitution of the social realm in which individuals are imagined to take their places. Systems Failure argues that this tradition develops an unfamiliar account of literature's contribution to the study of social order, disorder, and change in the long eighteenth century--one that has less to do with the novelistic representation of social reality than the literary analysis of the idea that society has a structure."-- Introduction: Unconscionable maps -- Life without theory in the Life of Savage -- Sterne and the uses of disorder -- From map to network in Humphry Clinker -- Godwin's handshake -- Jane Austen and the morphology of the marriage plot -- De Quincey's systems.

"The volume comes out of a 2010 Dickens conference at the editors' institution and brings together deceased, senior, mid-career, and a couple of junior Dickens scholars from the Anglophone and German literary critical traditions. During his career as a writer and a public figure, Charles Dickens witnessed unprecedented social and economic changes, becoming ever more dissatisfied with English society as a whole. His works, bursting with restless energy and protean style, registered and commented on the ceaseless changes in the Victorian world. As a documentarian, a melodramatist, a satirist, and a crusading moralist, Dickens both chronicled the transformations around him and advocated for radical changes to British laws and attitudes in order to minimize the malign impact of modern industrial capitalism. Bringing together an international group of Dickens scholars, this volume highlights the many ways in which the notion of change has found entry into and is negotiated within Dickens's works. The contributors explore Dickens as an agent of change in four aspects: social change, political and ideological change, literary change, and cultural change. In an afterword, Edgar Rosenberg adds a personal account of how Dickens changed the life of one eminent Dickensian"-- Repetitions and reversals : patterns for social change in Pickwick papers / Jerome Meckier -- Three revolutions : alternate routes to social change in Bleak house / Joel J. Brattin -- Dickens, society, and art : change in Dickens's view of effecting social reform / Robert Heaman -- The world changing Dickens, Dickens changing the world / Bert Hornback -- Parrots, birds of prey, and snorting cattle : Dickens's Whig agenda / David Paroissien -- The tremendous potency of the small : Dickens, the individual, and social change in a post-America, post-catastrophist age / Nancy Aycock Metz -- Money, power, and appearance in Dombey and son / Michael Hollington -- The passing of the Pickwick moment / Malcolm Andrews -- The chimes and the rhythm of life / Matthias Bauer -- Radical Dickens : Dickens and the tradition of romantic radicalism / Norbert Lennartz -- Modern characters in the late novels of Charles Dickens / Herbert Foltinek -- The cultural politics of Dickens's Hard times / Doris Feldmann -- Conjuring Dickens : magic, intellectual property, and The old curiosity shop / Christopher Pittard -- Popular Dickens : changing Bleak house for the East End stage / Chris Louttit -- The frozen deep : Gad's Hill, June-July 1857 / Robert Tracy -- How to read Dickens in English : a last retrospect / Edgar Rosenberg.

Two women. Two sons. Two islands Themis and Aliki grew up under the German occupation of Greece and subsequent Civil War that tore the country in two. The polarised ideologies of left and right ushered in violent and bloody struggle. The two women meet while imprisoned on the exile island of Makronisos, having been members of the communist army. Themis has given birth to a son, Angelos, but is too malnourished to feed him so Aliki offers to wet nurse the boy. When Aliki is condemned to death, Themis promises to find and raise Aliki's son, Nikos, for the two boys share the same father - army captain, Fotis. Themis raises Angelos and Nikos as brothers but they are caught in the tensions between left and right. Angelos flees to America while Nikos, the more rebellious spirit, is killed when army tanks attack students demonstrating against the Junta. Themis is heartbroken, but the slaughter of the innocent students restores democracy to Greece, Nikos has not died in vain

"Trends and Turning Points presents sixteen articles, examining the discursive construction of the late antique and Byzantine world, focusing specifically on the utilisation of trends and turning points to make stuff from the past, whether texts, matter, or action, meaningful. Contributions are divided into four complementary strands, Scholarly Constructions, Literary Trends, Constructing Politics, and Turning Points in Religious Landscapes. Each strand cuts across traditional disciplinary boundaries and periodisation, placing historical, archaeological, literary, and architectural concerns in discourse, whilst drawing on examples from the full range of the medieval Roman past. While its individual articles offer numerous important insights, together the volume collectively rethinks fundamental assumptions about how late antique and Byzantine studies has and continues to be discursively constructed"--

However, prior to the futurist break, a group of early-twentieth-century poets, later dubbed crepuscolari (crepusculars), had already begun an attack against the dominant cultural system, using their poetry as the locus in which useless little objects clashed with the traditional poetry of human greatness and stylistic perfection. The Quiet Avant-Garde draws from a number of twenty-first-century theories--vital materialism, object-oriented ontology, and environmental humanities--as well as Bruno Latour's criticism of modernity to illustrate how the crepuscular movement sabotaged the modern mindset and launched the counter-discourse of the Italian avant-garde by blurring the line dividing people from "things." This liminal poetics, at the crossroad of tradition, modernism, and the avant-garde, acted as the initiator of the ethical and environmental transition from a universe subjected to humans to human-thing co-agency. This book proposes a contemporary reading of Italian twentieth-century movements and offers a foothold for scholars outside Italian studies to access authors who are still unexplored in North American literature."-- Cover; Copyright; Title; Contents; Acknowledgments; List of Abbreviations; Introduction: Poetry at the Twilight; 1 A Matter of Things: Modernity, Modernism, Avant-Garde; 2 The Avant-Garde Is Made of Useless Objects; 3 Being a Living Thing: Towards a New Notion of Body; 4 Love and the Grand Solidarity of Sound; 5 Avant-Garde Immersive Onto-Cognition; Conclusion; Notes; Bibliography; Index

"This book proposes a critical look at peninsular and Hispanic American cultures / literatures under the influence of LGBTIQ activism at the end of the 20th century, when binary codes dissolve massively to make way for new reinterpretations of queer / gay genealogies and discovery of the subversive potential and the performative vigor of the "events of desire". At the same time, are the years of neoliberal globalization that is beginning to prevail, an era characterized by its fráxitos, term that Brad Epps proposes in his introduction to the volume to point to the apparent tension between the successes (emancipating, aesthetic, etc.). and failures (socio-political and others). The chapters approach the topic of dissident sexualities from different angles: from trans autobiography or queer children's story to LGTBIQ presence on Spanish television and "porno activism" at the Chilean post-dictatorship. They also analyze key personalities, such as Nazario, Mendicutti, Villordo or Cozarinsky, and decisive programs: the erotic turn, the lesbian visibility, the neoliberalism or the "post-dictatorship fictions". A complete balance of the state of the operative tendencies in the Hispanic queer studies at the turn of the millennium." --Translated from back cover Frontmatter --Índice --Prólogo /Ingenschay, Dieter --Los 'fráxitos' de la disidencia sexual en la época de la globalización neoliberal /Epps, Brad --Porno activismo en democracia: los casos del Colectivo de Disidencia Sexual (CUDS) y José Carlos Henríquez (Camilo) /Blanco, Fernando A. --Edgardo Cozarinsky y el territorio del deseo homosexual /Chappuzeau, Bernhard --Visibilidad lésbica, canon literario y paradojas autoriales: Tu nombre escrito en el agua (1995), de Irene González Frei /Díaz Fernández, Estrella --La cultura gay en transiciones (España, Argentina, Chile) /Ingenschay, Dieter --Bellezas neoliberales y sexualidades disidentes en América Latina /Lawrenz, Nina / Zapata Galindo, Martha --Ngui'u (lesbianas) y muxe' (muxes): atisbos a la dimensión sociogenérica en el universo literario zapoteco según Víctor Cata /Madrigal, Elena --Ficciones posdictadura: la trilogía oscura de Gabriela Cabezón Cámara /Maradei, Guadalupe --Características identitarias del cuento infantil queer en España /Martínez-Expósito, Alfredo --Hacia una cartografía de las textualidades autobiográficas trans en España /Mérida Jiménez, Rafael M. --Dos infancias góticas: el niño queer en El cordero carnívoro de Agustín Gómez Arcos y El palomo cojo de Eduardo Mendicutti /Mira, Alberto --Las novelas "homosexuales" de Óscar Hermes Villordo /Peralta, Jorge Luis --Intertextualidad musical e histórica en Anarcoma (1983 y 1987), de Nazario /Ramos Rebollo, José Luis --Todo bajo el sol y la luna: el erotic turn de la narrativa española a finales del siglo xx /Reinstädler, Janett --Maria-Mercè Marçal, la comunidad herida /Segarra, Marta --Representaciones LGTBIQ en la televisión de ficción española, de la Transición a Zapatero /Zurian, Francisco A. --Sobre los autores/las autoras

"Focusing on historical writing in the last decades of the eighteenth century and the first half of the nineteenth, Rigney analyzes a wide range of works by Walter Scott, Jules Michelet, Augustin Thierry, and Thomas Carlyle. She shows how the attempt to write an alternative history brought historical writing into a close yet fraught relationship with literature. The result is a new account of that relationship as it took shape in the romantic period and as it continues to influence contemporary practices."--Jacket "Imperfect Histories puts "imperfection" at the heart of a theory of historical representation. Ann Rigney shows how historical writing involves dealing with intractable subjects that resist our efforts to know and to shape them. Those who write history, she says, engage in an ongoing struggle to match up what they find relevant in the past with the information and interpretive models at their disposal. Chronic dissatisfaction is at the heart of historical practice. This dissatisfaction is especially evident in the various attempts made over the last two centuries to write an "alternative" history of everyday experience." 1.Hybridity: The Case of Sir Walter Scott --2.Representability: Cultural History and the Fear of Long Books --3.Sublimity: Thomas Carlyle and the Aesthetics of Historical Ignorance --4.Literature and the Longing for History.

"Hiromi Tsuchiya Dollase examines the role that magazines have played in the creation and development of the concept of shōjo, the modern cultural identity of adolescent Japanese girls. Cloaked in the pages of girls' magazines, writers could effectively express their desires for freedom from and resistance against oppressive cultural conventions. Shōjo characters' "immature" qualities and social marginality gave authors the power to express their thoughts without worrying about the reaction of authorities. Age of Shōjo details the transformation of Japanese girls' fiction from the 1900s to the 1980s, including the adaptation of Western stories such as Louis May Alcott's Little Women in the Meiji period; the emergence of young female writers in the 1910s and the flourishing girls' fiction era of the 1920s and 1930s; the changes wrought by state interference during the war; and a new era of empowered post-war fiction. The book highlights seminal author Yoshiya Nobuko's dreamy fantasies and Kitagawa Chiyo's social realism, Morita Tama's autobiographical feminism, the contributions of Nobel Prize winning author Kawabata Yasunari, and the humorous modern fiction of Himuro Saeko and Tanabe Seiko. These authors address social topics such as education, same-sex love, feminism, and socialism using girls' perspectives. The age of shōjo, which began at the turn of the twentieth century, continues to nurture new generations of writers and entice audiences beyond age, gender, and nationality"-- Shofujin (little women): recreating Jo for the female audience in Meiji Japan -- Shojo sekai (Girls' World): the formation of girls' magazine culture and the emergence of "Scribbling girls" -- Yoshiya Nobuko and Kitagawa Chiyo: fiction by and for girls -- Shojo feminism in semi-autobiographical stories by Yoshiya Nobuko and Morita Tama -- Shojo no tomo (Girls' friend): conflicting ideals of girls on the homefront -- Himawari (Sunflower): reimagining Shojo during the occupation period -- Himuro Saeko's Shojo heroines from Heian to Showa -- Tanabe Seiko and the age of Shojo.

"In Literate Community in Early Imperial China, Charles Sanft looks at interactions with text during the Han period and argues that they were more widespread than has been recognized. Archaeologists have excavated a tremendous number of written materials left behind at military installations in the northwestern border regions of China, and scholars have often studied these documents for what they tell us about institutions. But their cultural aspects have received far less attention. Sanft brings an innovative interdisciplinary analytic framework to the study of these documents. He offers a new way to distinguish between reading and writing, which allows for an improved understanding of how text worked in early China, and concentrates on the community rather than the individual. In doing so, he is able to show that a much broader section of early society had meaningful interactions with text. This is a major shift from previous understandings, and makes Literate Community an important contribution to early China studies, the study of literacy, and the global history of non-elites"-- Interacting with text in early imperial China and beyond -- Contexts and sources -- Posted texts -- Statements of individuals and groups -- Composite texts -- Practical texts -- Cultural texts -- Letters.
