    A privileged visual journey through one of the most famous Indian heritage sites. Situated in the northern Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, Khajuraho is renowned as much for the elegance of its architecture as for the sensuality of its sculpture. Khajuraho has become one of the unmissable sights for any traveller to India and owes its international reputation to the lavishness of its numerous Hindu shrines. Formerly an important political and religious centre, it is thought to have contained up to ninety-five temples, as the many ruins concealed under otherwise anonymous hillocks scattered throughout the valley attest. Only twenty-five survive. The earliest mention of Khajuraho dates from the seventh century. After the collapse of the Candella kingdom, the site experienced almost four centuries of oblivion and the once proud city-state turned into a sleepy village nestling in what had become an arid basin for several months in the year. British hunters rediscovered it quite by chance at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Since then the area has undergone several phases of restoration, as befits one of the leading sites of the world's cultural heritage. The highly unusual nature of its temple depictions has given this area a somewhat 'scandalous' reputation, unleashing, over the years, interpretations of all kinds

    Archaeological research and ancient records have been combined in this work to provide a comprehensive account of the buildings of Merv, an oasis city in the middle of the Turkmenistani desert. Founded in the sixth century BC, Merv was a key staging post along the Central Asian trade routes linking Europe and India, and its buildings - palaces, pavilions, gardens and towers springing from the sand - impressed all who visited it. Although eroded by time and weather, enough remains of these buildings to illustrate the evolution of architectural styles in the early medieval and Seljuk eras (7th to 13th cents AD), a period during which the Islamic world developed its own unique range of building types and decorative motifs. This book examines in detail each of the surviving buildings of Merv, discussing their form and function – from palaces to ice-houses, from fortified watch-towers to libraries and dovecotes. Details of doors, windows, corridors and stairways, monumental entrances, rooms, domes and vaults, niches, wall decoration and flooring are described and illustrated in great detail. The book will serve as a major resource for scholars of Islamic architecture.

The British Empire has long since collapsed but in its place has risen a new world power; globalised capitalism. London, rebranded an 'investment opportunity', is now a city of continuous demolition, shifting cranes, and glittering new high rises. The frameworks of luxury residential towers are documented during construction, and the use of double exposures layers building upon building.     Jerusalem's built texture of its neighborhoods, streets, and houses is the backdrop for Amos Oz's autobiographical story, from the end of the Mandate, the days of the War of Independence and the siege, the early years of the city to later chapters in the city's history. Amos Oz's Jerusalem book casts a visual reference spotlight on some 100 milestones, Accompanied by hundreds of enlightening drawings, along the urban routes of Oz across Jerusalem, many of which are not part of the usual tourist routes and are therefore known but few. It is another Jerusalem - a rainbow city, wrinkle-and-contrast, which, along with its historical and religious charm, suffers from political rifts, demographic and social problems, and physical wrangling in some of its parts. The itineraries allow pedestrians or those in the armchair to know more about the places where things have also happened in the city since the end of the Mandate to the present.
