    Books before print – manuscripts – were modified continuously throughout the medieval period. Focusing on the ninth and twelfth centuries, this volume explores such material changes as well as the varying circumstances under which handwritten books were produced, used and collected. An important theme is the relationship between the physical book and its users. Can we reflect on reading practices through an examination of the layout of a text? To what extent can we use the contents of libraries to understand the culture of the book? The volume explores such issues by focusing on a broad palette of texts and through a detailed analysis of manuscripts from all corners of Europe. Gedurende de middeleeuwen waren manuscripten voor boeken voortdurend onderhevig aan veranderingen. Deze kwamen voort uit nieuwe inzichten in bijvoorbeeld het gebruik van koppen bij teksten of de toepassing van hoofdstuknummering.
    Met de focus op de negende en twaalfde eeuw verkent dit boek de veranderingen die er plaatshadden in de keuze van het gebruikte materiaal, maar ook de veranderende omstandigheden waaronder handgeschreven boeken werden geproduceerd, gebruikt en verzameld. Door een onderzoek naar een breed palet aan teksten en gedetailleerde analyse van handschriften uit alle hoeken van Europa onthult dit boek de relatie tussen het boek en zijn gebruikers.

    Main description: Entre le début du treizième siècle et la fin du quinzième, on a pu recenser pour le moins dix traductions françaises de la "Consolatio philosophiae" de Boèce. De ces traductions, deux seulement ont été publiées à ce jour. La publication de la présente édition offre donc un certain intérêt en soi, mais en plus, elle s'inscrit dans un vaste projet d'études portant sur des questions linguistiques, littéraires et culturelles. La présente édition est basée sur un manuscrit de Paris, Bibliothèque nationale, fr. 1096. Le texte originale date de la décennie 1320-1330 et a éte composé au sud da la Lorraine. C'est une traduction fidèle à sa source latine, avec peu d'ommissions ou d'additions. Son influence s'est exercée de façon plutôt indirecte: elle a servi de base partielle à deux traductions subséquentes au moins. - Etant donné l'importance du vocabulaire philosophique et dialectal, l'édition est dotée de deux glossaires, l'un basé sur l'édition, et l'autre repérant les vocables des Variantes

    Main description: This is a critical edition of one of the many medieval French translations of Boethius' "Consolatio philosophiae". The base manuscript is Paris, Bibliothèque nationale, fr. 1096. The original text dates from ca. 1330 and was composed in the south of Lorraine. The Introduction examines the original dialect and that of each manuscript as well as some of the translation techniques adopted. It is a quite clear and accurate translation, with few omissions or additions. It was consulted by at least two subsequent translators of the "Consolatio". The philosophical and dialectal vocabulary presents a certain interest. The edition includes two glossaries, one relating to the edited text, the other to the vocabulary of the variants (three other manuscripts)

    Main description: Die "Legenda aurea", die Jacobus de Voragine zwischen 1260 und 1270 in lateinischer Sprache zusammenstellte, ist die im Mittelalter am weitesten verbreitete Sammlung von Heiligenlegenden. Unter den zahllosen volkssprachlichen Fassungen finden sich auch drei altokzitanische Versionen, die in engem Zusammenhang mit der katalanischen "Legenda-aurea"-Überlieferung stehen. Die hier erstmals edierte altokzitanische Version B, eine Auswahl von 102 Kapiteln des Originalkorpus mit vier Erweiterungskapiteln, beruht auf verschiedenen okzitanischen bzw. katalanischen Übersetzungen aus dem Lateinischen. Im Vordergrund der sprachlichen Auswertung steht der Wortschatz der edierten Texte, der vollständig im Glossar erfaßt ist. Neu belegte Formen und Bedeutungen sind gesondert kommentiert und erweitern die Materialbasis der altokzitanischen Lexikographie

    Main description: The "Legenda aurea", compiled in Latin by Jacobus de Voragine between 1260 and 1270, is the most widely disseminated collection of saints' legends in the Middle Ages. Among the countless vernacular reworkings there are three in Old Occitan which are closely bound up with the Catalan line of "Legenda aurea" adaptations. The Old Occitan Version B edited here for the first time represents a selection of 102 chapters from the original corpus with four additional chapters and is based on various Occitan and Catalan translations from the Latin. The linguistic commentary concentrates on the vocabulary of the texts edited and also presents it in a complete glossary. Newly attested forms and meanings are provided with commentaries of their own and represent a significant addition to the material available to Old Occitan lexicography
