    Biographical note: Gertrud Lehnert (Prof. Dr.) lehrt Allgemeine und Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft und Kulturwissenschaft an der Universität Potsdam. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte sind Geschichte und Theorie der Mode, Visuelle Kulturen sowie Raum- und Emotionsforschung. Bei transcript erschien der Sammelband »Raum und Gefühl. Der Spatial Turn und die neue Emotionsforschung« (2011). Mode - das ist weit mehr als bloß Kleidung. Das Buch entwickelt eine aktuelle und in dieser Form lange überfällige Theorie der Mode: Es macht Mode sowohl als Teil der materiellen Kultur wie auch als Ergebnis kulturellen und ästhetischen Handelns verstehbar. Die Rolle der Mode für die Konstitution von kulturellen und individuellen Identitäten wird analysiert, ihre Qualität als soziales Zeichensystem oder ihre Bedeutung als Wirtschaftsfaktor von globaler Dimension. Und schließlich gerät Mode auch als Kunstform in den Blick - als Spiel mit ästhetischen Möglichkeiten, das unseren Alltag in ungeahnten Ausmaßen prägt und durchdringt. Das Buch bietet eine Grundlage der Beschäftigung mit Mode in der akademischen Lehre und Forschung, in der Aus- und Weiterbildung in Modedesign und Modemanagement sowie in den Kultur- und Theaterwissenschaften.

    Fashion - it comprises far more than simply clothes. This book develops a contemporary and, in this form, long overdue Theory of Fashion: It allows fashion to be understood both as part of the material culture and as the result of cultural and aesthetic conduct. The role of fashion in the constituting of cultural and individual identities is analyzed, including its quality as a social semiotic system and its significance as a economic factor of global dimensions. Ultimately, fashion also comes into view as a form of art - as a game with aesthetic possibilities that shape and permeate our experience of the everyday in unexpected proportions. The book offers a foundation for pursuits involving fashion in academic teaching and research, fashion design training and development, fashion management, and in the fields of cultural and theater studies Mode - das ist weit mehr als bloß Kleidung. This book develops a contemporary and, in this form, long overdue Theory of Fashion: It allows fashion to be understood both as part of the material culture and as the result of cultural and aesthetic conduct. The role of fashion in the constituting of cultural and individual identities is analyzed, including its quality as a social semiotic system and its significance as a economic factor of global dimensions. Ultimately, fashion also comes into view as a form of art - as a game with aesthetic possibilities that shape and permeate our experience of the everyday in unexpected proportions. The book offers a foundation for pursuits involving fashion in academic teaching and research, fashion design training and development, fashion management, and in the fields of cultural and theater studies.
